In 1961, war broke out between Angolan National Separatists and the Portuguese colonial government of dictator Antonio Salazar. This was the beginning of a 13-year war of independence. In the midst of this conflict there was a young soldier named Jose Alcino who was tasked with sourcing materials to build civilian shelters to house displaced people and military personnel. These were large wall tent structures that needed to withstand strong winds, rain and intense sun. They also needed to be durable enough to last years. During these years, the young Alcino learned the importance of sourcing quality materials, refining industrial sewing techniques and developing design principles that created a product worthy of his name.

When the war ended in 1974, a 50-year career in the private sector began where Alcino transferred his experience in the military to building awnings, canopies and eventually, rooftop tents. As time passed, his passion for camping led him to design and produce custom tents, for his own use in trips in Northern Africa. In 1999, he and his son Mario Martins, an industrial design student, joined forces to create a company that strives to manufacture tents with rugged durability, ease of use, and slick design.

All James Baroud products are still handcrafted in small batches at their own factory in Porto, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and quality control. The company employs a team of experienced adventurers, including a former Paris-Dakar rally pilot, to rigorously test each product in real-world conditions. This commitment to quality is backed by an industry leading five-year warranty, underscoring their confidence in the durability and reliability of their products.

James Baroud introduced several industry-firsts, including the first automatic opening rooftop tent in 2005, significantly reducing setup time. In 2011, the company launched the Space model, which featured a unique clamshell design with an extended front, offering more living space. The company also pioneered the integration of panoramic windows, providing 360° views and enhancing ventilation. It is still the only tent offered personalized in over 200 color options. In 2014, James Baroud expanded into the U.S. market, further solidifying its global presence.

Each model has meticulous details that were designed for particular uses only experienced campers would know. For example, the Discovery model is a clamshell style tent that can be used by anyone. Easy to use, comfortable, light weight. But the design of this tent was engineered to withstand the extreme cold conditions of a winter storm in Iceland. The top shell is constructed with thick layers of fiberglass that can be used as a windbreaker with very low thermal conductivity. Technical fabric keeps its rigidity, allowing the inside of the tent to be an oasis in a situation that could otherwise be life threatening.

The Evasion XL is a straight up tent with lots of interior space and a full 360 degree view. When integrated with an awning room it is the only realistic tent set up in the market that can comfortably accommodate 8 people.  There are Evasion tents in use for over 20 years and counting.

So many people within the company regularly use the product and hold it to the highest standards. From Mario himself who tests products in his excursions in Morocco every year, to the engineering and sales staff. The company continues to make strides outside of the European Markets and is committed to pushing the boundaries of design and functionality. With a focus on sustainability and continuous improvement, James Baroud is poised to lead the way in the evolution of rooftop tents for years to come.

Industry Spotlight: – Four Wheel Campers https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-four-wheel-campers/ Tue, 15 Apr 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=49185 Four Wheel Campers: A Legacy of Exploration, Innovation, and the Open Road

Before “overlanding” was a household term in the U.S., Four Wheel Campers (FWC) was already quietly outfitting adventurers for life off-grid. Founded in 1972 in Colorado, the company emerged from a simple but powerful idea: that a reliable, lightweight, and low-profile pop-up truck camper could unlock the backroads and wilderness for more people. That vision took shape through countless trips into the Rockies testing gear in real conditions. The earliest prototypes were born from rugged experiences and the kind of “let’s figure it out” moments only found deep in the wild.

Those real-world adventures shaped a truck camper built to last, with durability and simplicity at its core. From the start, FWC has been less about frills and more about function—offering a dependable basecamp for hunters, adventure sports enthusiasts, overlanders, and outdoor folk alike.

In the 1980s, the company relocated to California’s Sierra Nevada foothills, where it continues building campers today in its Woodland facility. The team behind FWC is a blend of seasoned craftsmen with decades of experience and passionate explorers, many of whom spend their weekends testing the very products they help design and build.

That field-first mentality has helped FWC remain at the forefront of the overlanding movement. The brand was a proud exhibitor at the very first Overland Expo and has been a consistent presence at events ever since, helping shape the modern overlanding community from its early days.

default

So, what sets Four Wheel Campers apart? First, its time-tested pop-up truck camper design: a low center of gravity and reduced weight make the journey — both on and off-road — not only more aerodynamic and fuel-efficient, but more enjoyable to drive.

Second, made-to-order flexibility: FWC offers everything from slide-ins to toppers to flatbeds, all configurable with solar, power systems, water solutions, and other off-grid essentials. Customers can also personalize finishing touches like cabinetry, flooring, fabric, and exterior colors to match their individual style.

From minimalist to modular to full-on maximalist builds, FWC’s broad range of options reflects a legacy brand that can do it all — and the decades of dedication and craftsmanship that make that possible.

FWC is guided by values of simplicity, self-reliance, and making the outdoors more accessible. Beyond building truck campers, the team works to support meaningful experiences in nature. Whether hosting annual environmental clean-up efforts or hosting their annual Owners Rally to bring the community together, Four Wheel Campers is proud to play a small part in helping people connect with the outdoors.

What might surprise people? While the company’s roots are steeped in tradition, it’s constantly innovating. The latest modular models and evolving electrical configurations represent the future of truck camper design.

After more than 50 years, Four Wheel Campers remains grounded in its original purpose: to help people travel farther, stay out longer, and build deeper connections with the wild. In a fast-growing industry, FWC stands out not just for its longevity but for its authenticity. Built by people who live the life, for those who crave the wild, Four Wheel Campers continues to be a trusted companion for those who believe the journey is just as important as the destination.

Industry Spotlight: Off-Road Travel TV https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-off-road-travel-tv/ Mon, 17 Mar 2025 15:21:10 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=48612 Off-Road Travel TV is the only weekly cable television show devoted to off-road adventure travel and the overland lifestyle. Each week, Off-Road Travel TV takes viewers to spectacular off-road locations and shows them the latest gear and accessories that make the modern off-road/overland travel lifestyle so popular and appealing.

Photo by Off Road Travel TV

Off-Road Travel TV actually began with a trip to the Overland Expo, the PNW event in 2022.  Until then it had just been a crazy idea from the minds of co-founders Mark Mitchell and Ken Faught. Mark encouraged Ken to go to the Overland Expo and check out all the excitement surrounding the world of overland and off-road adventure travel and think about the concept of a TV show focused on the lifestyle.

So Ken loaded up his Sprinter van and his 18-year-old son Wyatt and took off on a trip to Redmond, Oregon. What they found at the Expo made a huge impression and they eventually stretched their weekend trip into a two week long van adventure across the western states.  When they came back they were both on fire to move forward with the project.

After two years of preparation and hard work, the idea became a reality in early 2024 when they signed a 2 year deal with MAVTV!  Wanting to do something big and make it a memorable debut season for viewers the team decided to film an epic 2 month long 8000 mile trip to Alaska and back, coined “Glaciers to Geysers: A Tale of Fire and Ice” and build this into a series of segments for the show.

READ MORE: Gear Showcase: Vehicle Outfitters

Building vehicles for the trip was the first order of business and over the next six to eight months with lots of help from the industry three vehicles were transformed into totally competent overland machines capable of traveling and camping off-road for weeks at a time.

Considering the length of the trip they also decided to pull a variety of adventure trailers to add some creature comforts and make the trip more enjoyable overall.  They also wanted to field test as many products as they could so they brought a wide variety of gear and equipment to be used and evaluated for both the television show and companion website.

default

The stunning beauty of the footage they captured in the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia and Alaska made the first half of the trip hard to top but the return trip back through Montana, Idaho, and Utah turned out to be equally amazing, proving once again that you don’t have to go too far from home to find world class places for overland, wheeling and off-road adventure.

Mixing storytelling from the Alaska trek with a variety of segments on everything from the vehicle builds and equipment reviews to dual sport motorcycle tours, UTV action and real world testing of a variety of off-road vehicles make season one of Off-Road Travel TV must see tv for any off-road or adventure minded traveler.

Off-Road Travel TV can be seen every Sunday at 9:30am on MAVTV or on the MAVTV GO app available at www.mavtvgo.com

Industry Spotlight: ANTISHANTY https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-antishanty/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 11:51:55 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=47263 ANTISHANTY was founded with a simple vision: to build a rugged, adaptable trailer for any outdoor enthusiast. ANTISHANTY’s founders come from the amusement industry, with 30+ years of experience designing and manufacturing complex trailers and products. The founders are avid adventurers—sharing hobbies including mountain biking, skiing, snowmobiling, motorbiking, and camping. Experiencing firsthand the limitations of traditional trailers, they found themselves modifying cargo and camp trailers, attempting to create trailers that could meet the demands of their multiple passions. From this need, ANTISHANTY was born.

ANTISHANTY was founded with a simple vision: to build a rugged, adaptable trailer for any outdoor enthusiast.

ANTI: one that is opposed to; SHANTY: a small crudely built dwelling or shelter, typically constructed of wood. The name itself defined the mission of the company: to create lightweight, off-road, modular, hard-sided dwellings constructed of sustainable materials that do not rot or mold over time, no canvas, and no wood. ANTISHANTY set out to design a versatile, adaptable trailer that could seamlessly support any outdoor hobby in any season.

AS-1 Trailer A-Frame Pop-Up Trailer

The AS-1 is the first trailer concept ANTISHANTY created. It’s a hard-sided, quick deploying, A-frame pop-up trailer with modular queen bunks. The modular bed system sleeps four adults, converts into a picnic table, or clears space for outdoor toys like motorcycles and mountain bikes while maintaining a lofted queen bed up in the A-frame.

The first full-scale AS-1 was built entirely from wood in an employee’s garage – a testament to the hands-on, driven spirit of the team. This rough prototype captured the size and shape of what ANTISHANTY wanted to achieve. The design was translated into CAD, allowing them to construct a refined model with a laser-cut aluminum exo/endo skeleton and insulated aluminum composite panels. The one-piece insulated composite panels reduce waste and provide a seamless, four-season dwelling designed to handle rain, snow, wind, or sun. Lightweight and towable behind almost any vehicle, the AS-1 was built for off-road terrain, equipped with BFGoodrich KO2s and Timbren Off-Road suspension to handle rugged conditions.

RR-1 Rigid Roof Trailer

Today, ANTISHANTY is much more than trailers. The same foundational vision—fully hard-sided, lightweight, modular, and all-aluminum—has grown into an entire lineup of off-road adventure dwellings. All ANTISHANTY products, manufactured at the company’s facility in Logan, Utah, are built from aircraft-grade aluminum, with no wood to rot and no canvas to flap in the wind, ensuring durability and longevity.

In addition to the AS-1, ANTISHANTY now offers the RR-1: the Rigid Roof Trailer that requires no setup and is ready for instant adventure; the RTD (Roof Top Dwelling): a hard-sided alternative to traditional rooftop tents that provide a secure, insulated sleeping space; the DWELL SHELL: a truck shell camper with a passthrough to the hard-sided RTD, providing a seamless indoor-outdoor experience; and the 4XD: an ultralight off-road trailer featuring the RTD on top, is designed for travelers needing lightweight yet durable storage and sleeping space.

READ MORE: The Best Gifts for Overlanders 2024

Each ANTISHANTY product is designed with flexibility and functionality in mind. Modular bed systems, like those in the AS-1 and RR-1, offer adjustable sleeping arrangements and easy conversions for gear storage, picnic tables, or hauling equipment. MOLLE Panels and lockable storage on the DWELL SHELL and 4XD allow users to mount and secure gear or tools, making them adaptable for both work and play.

Dwell Different

This innovative, functionality-based approach is what sets ANTISHANTY apart. Rooted in the original AS-1 concept, the brand continuously expands its lineup, pushing boundaries of what’s possible in outdoor living. ANTISHANTY’s motto, ‘DWELL DIFFERENT,’ reflects this ethos: each product is built to adapt, endure, and enhance the outdoor experience. From the ultralight 4XD to the fully-equipped RR-1, ANTISHANTY enhances any outdoor lifestyle. DWELL DIFFERENT and enjoy the outdoors to the fullest with ANTISHANTY.

Industry Spotlight: ICON Vehicle Dynamics https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-icon-vehicle-dynamics-2/ Thu, 07 Nov 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=46470 ICON Vehicle Dynamics has established itself as a cornerstone in the overlanding community by developing high-performance suspension systems, wheels, and innovative products designed to tackle the unique challenges of rugged, off-the-grid travel. Driven by a commitment to adventure and robust engineering, ICON’s products are more than just equipment—they are essential tools for those who push the boundaries of exploration, self-reliance, and environmental respect.

From Adventure to Engineering Innovation

ICON’s roots trace back to real-world experiences in challenging terrains, where founder and lead engineer Dylan Evans recognized the limitations of standard suspension systems. Realizing that the overlanding community required more than standard modifications, Evans sought to create systems that could handle the added load and provide stability in unforgiving environments. The team’s mission became clear: design suspension systems that overlanders could rely on, no matter the terrain or distance, empower them to explore with confidence, knowing their equipment is tested and tuned for any adventure.

ICON’s Holistic Engineering Approach

READ MORE: Best Overland Deals of the Week

ICON’s dedication to performance goes beyond simply producing parts—it lies in creating cohesive systems that enhance vehicle capability as a whole. This is the essence of their Holistic Engineering approach in which the weakest link or performance limiting factor is identified, and whatever components are needed to solve or extend the limits are then designed or created to work seamlessly with the other ICON elements that compromise a complete and balanced system.

By integrating components such as shocks, control arms, and Delta Joints in addition to ICON Alloy Wheels and Impact Armor, each ICON system is designed to function seamlessly. This approach elevates handling, load capacity, and stability, providing an experience tailored to each users specific demands.

ICON’s rigorous testing standard, known as the “ICON 1K,” requires each suspension system to undergo a 1,000-mile field test. During this process, vehicles are pushed to their limits in a variety of challenging environments, allowing engineers to identify areas for improvement and ensuring products meet the high standards required by their customers.

Introducing the Delta Joint: A Game-Changer for Overlanders

One of ICON’s standout innovations is the Delta Joint, a cutting-edge solution that blends the durability of a ball joint with the articulation benefits of a uniball. Uniballs have traditionally been favored for their flexibility, but exposure to elements like dirt, mud, and road chemicals can lead to corrosion and premature wear. Recognizing these limitations, ICON developed the Delta Joint, a heavy-duty, high-angle retrofit joint that resists environmental factors, offering overlanders a more durable and low-maintenance solution for extended off-road travel. This patent-pending design solves an industry-wide problem and exemplifies ICON’s commitment to pioneering resilient, practical solutions for the overland community.

The Rebound Pro Wheel: Built for Extreme Conditions

ICON’s Rebound Pro wheel takes strength and durability to new heights. Specifically engineered for rugged off-road conditions, this wheel incorporates a patented inner-lock bead retention system, which offers better tire security at low pressures—a crucial feature for overlanders who traverse rocky, uneven terrain. The Rebound Pro wheel stands out not only for its performance but for its compatibility with both off-road vehicles and daily drivers, making it a versatile choice for adventurers who need reliability both on and off the road.

CDEV Technology: Smart Suspension for the Modern Overlander

ICON’s dedication to innovative technology is perhaps best showcased in their Compression Damping Electronic Valve (CDEV) system, which integrates intelligent electronic control into suspension design. CDEV technology automatically adjusts suspension settings based on driving conditions, providing optimal comfort and stability in real-time. This is especially beneficial for overlanders who encounter rapidly changing terrain, as CDEV seamlessly adjusts to keep the vehicle level, stable, and responsive. By blending precision engineering with advanced electronics, ICON’s CDEV system is paving the way for a new era of smart overlanding suspension.

A Commitment to the Overlanding Community

ICON Vehicle Dynamics stands as a leader in the world of overland engineering, delivering products that represent a perfect blend of durability, advanced technology, and a commitment to sustainable exploration. With innovations like the Delta Joint, Rebound Pro wheels, and CDEV technology, ICON continues to push boundaries, ensuring that overlanders everywhere can rely on their equipment to lead them forward, wherever their journey may take them.

Industry Spotlight: Cascadia 4×4 https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-cascadia-4x4/ Thu, 17 Oct 2024 11:28:18 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=46471 Cascadia 4×4 was founded in 2013 by two high school friends, Tom Dyakowski and Dave Loretto. Auto-enthusiasts from a young age and as former geologists, Tom and Dave took a downturn in the mining industry as a sign that they should start chasing their passion in the off-roading and overland industry. They dubbed their company the “off-road anomaly” due to their intent to stand out by committing to innovation, quality, and exceptional customer service.

The company started out hand-making Jeep light bar frames and light brackets in Tom’s parents’ garage, making a name for themselves as creators of high-quality products with a strong dedication to style, functionality, and durability.

In 2014 the Flipster V1 was launched. This was Cascadia 4×4’s answer to the question many 4×4 enthusiasts face when they mount a winch on the front of their vehicles: “Where do I mount my license plate in a safe, visible, and convenient location without impeding the aesthetics of my expensive off-road rig?”. The Flipster solved this issue and was an instant success. Flip your license plate up when you want to use your winch, and flip it down when you’re done! The Flipster looks great, it’s built to last a lifetime, and best of all? No more tickets from law enforcement for not having a front license plate.

The Flipster saw subsequent development in 2016 with the release of the Flipster V2 and in 2021 with the Flipster V3. The Flipster V3 features a 4mm thick 5052 aluminum construction, textured black powder coating, and stainless-steel hardware. The pièce de resistance is the zinc-alloy torque hinge, which allows the license plate to be held in any position, day in and day out. The CNC-machined aluminum spacer block included makes the Flipster V3 compatible with both hawse and roller fairleads alike.

2018 heralded a new era for Cascadia 4×4 with an industry-changing invention: the world’s first hood-mounted solar panel system. Shown to the public for the first time at Overland Expo Flagstaff in 2018.

The VSS System, or “Vehicle Specific Solar System”, is a semi-flexible solar panel that attaches to the hood of a truck or SUV and seamlessly integrates with the vehicle’s electrical system by means of a waterproof/dustproof MPPT charge controller. The idea is simple: the permanently attached solar panel keeps the 12v system topped up at all times. This allows the user the freedom to run fridges, charge devices/tools, use lights, etc., all without worrying about killing the vehicle’s battery. After installation, the VSS System works automatically and requires no further input or special maintenance. With technology adapted from the marine industry, the VSS System is particularly adept at withstanding extreme environmental conditions.

A big announcement is coming about an entirely new version of the solar panel product known as the VSS System 2.0.  It is planned to be launched in Q1 2025. Cascadia 4×4 has taken the lessons learned over the last six years and applied them to a completely re-designed system. It will feature improved cooling, removability, Bluetooth integration, and a cutting-edge type of solar cell technology. Cascadia 4×4 listened to their customers and is excited to deliver another innovative product in 2025. More details will be shared on the Cascadia 4×4 website in the coming months.

Industry Spotlight: FunTreks Guidebooks https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-funtreks-guidebooks/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 10:07:09 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=46063 In 1994, Charles Wells began exploring the Colorado backcountry in his Jeep Grand Cherokee. Dissatisfied with the available 4×4 guidebooks, he decided to create his own. After two years of hard work, he completed his first book and founded FunTreks. Initially printing 4,000 copies, he was surprised at how quickly they sold out. He was able to quit his day job and focus on FunTreks full-time, a decision made possible by the unwavering support of his wife, Bev.

Today, FunTreks, an off-road guidebook company, has been a leader and a highly respected source of accurate trail information for over 25 years. What sets them apart from other trail info? From the start, they have only published trails driven by the two authors, Charles Wells and Matt Peterson. No third-party or crowd-sourced trail info is published; it is only first-hand experience. With each new edition of the guidebooks, trails are driven again for difficulty and route changes, which amounts to hundreds of thousands of trail miles and experience acquired by only two people over a quarter century.

The guidebooks are popular in the overland community. Customers will combine 3-4 trails to create a multi-day trip, focusing on enjoyable trails with great views and ignoring dull roads that are no fun. FunTreks only publishes the most enjoyable trails they find. The guidebooks provide peace of mind with custom-designed, turn-by-turn maps. They highlight trouble spots and offer high-quality details on every aspect of the trails, so your only concern is how much fun you can fit into a single day.

Industry Spotlight: ICON Vehicle Dynamics https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-icon-vehicle-dynamics/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=45608 ICON Vehicle Dynamics: Innovation, Adventure, and Overlanding

ICON Vehicle Dynamics was born from the passion of off-road enthusiasts who understand the challenges that come from pushing boundaries. The company, a premier manufacturer of performance suspension systems, wheels, and body armor, is deeply rooted in a pursuit of adventure and engineering. Their journey is not just about developing and manufacturing industry-leading products but about being part of a lifestyle that embraces exploration, self-reliance, and the freedom that comes with venturing off the beaten path.

Founded with a desire to create suspension systems capable of handling extreme environments, ICON products are engineered to withstand the rigors of overland travel while delivering exceptional performance and comfort.

The company’s origin is tied to personal adventures that highlighted the need for better suspension systems in challenging terrains. With a team comprised of engineers and enthusiasts who understand the unique demands of overland exploration, these adventures have become ICON innovations.

Behind the Brand: Inspiration

Company Co-founder and lead engineer Dylan Evans has been a driving force behind ICON’s mission to create suspension systems that meet the unique demands of the overlanding community. His experience combined with the important feedback he has received revealed the need for a suspension system that was both tunable and dependable for various overland conditions.

“While attending the first Overland Expo back in 2010 at the Amado Territory Ranch in Arizona and interacting with attendees, we immediately identified that overlanding enthusiasts required much more than an upgraded lift kit that looked good and provided clearance for larger tires,” shared Evans. “Recognizing this need for something different we set out to develop robust suspension systems that delivered an improved ride and performance while addressing the increased load carrying capabilities required. In doing so, our products were also engineered with dependability in mind so that with an ICON suspension system, customers can explore with confidence.”

Sparked by a determination to create products that enhance performance while maintaining reliability, ICON’s purpose-built suspension systems are equipped to conquer everything from rocky passes and desert washes to wide-open expanses with confidence and comfort.

“This philosophy is at the root of our approach we refer to Holistic Engineering,” added Evans. “As opposed to building individual parts such as shocks and a-arms, at the root of ICON are complete systems engineered to meet our customers’ needs while removing limitations and enhancing their experiences.”

Values Driven by Passion

More than engineers, Evans and his team spend countless hours in the field pushing their products to the limit. They don’t just design suspension systems—they live with them, constantly improving them based on real-world feedback. Each ICON system is subjected to a rigorous 1,000-mile test in which the vehicle is subjected to every condition and off-road situation imaginable. This hands-on approach, referred to internally as the ICON 1K enhances their personal connection to the overlanding lifestyle while driving their commitment to quality and customer-focused design.

The Overlanding Spirit

At its core, ICON Vehicle Dynamics values exploration, durability, and innovation. These principles resonate deeply within the overlanding community, where vehicles must perform under extreme conditions while offering reliability over long distances. ICON’s engineering excellence ensures their products are trusted by overlanders worldwide.

Beyond their exceptional products, ICON’s commitment to sustainability aligns seamlessly with the overlanding community, prioritizing responsible exploration and environmental stewardship. By supporting a roster of leading industry innovators along with initiatives that protect the planet, ICON is helping to ensure future generations can continue enjoying the wild spaces cherished by overlanders.

More than a company, ICON Vehicle Dynamics is a group of passionate explorers and engineers advancing the overland experience. Their products reflect the journeys that inspired them, leading the industry with a focus on quality, innovation, and the spirit of adventure.

In aeronautics, perfection is the expectation. Everything must work together seamlessly, maximizing spatial and functional efficiency, providing a high degree of safety and redundancy, and be as readily maintainable as possible. Every component is scrutinized during the design process. Extend this to the design of business jets for extremely discerning clients, and all these qualities must be combined with beauty and design excellence.

Bespoke Overland Builds

This experience and expertise in the aeronautical field is what sets Delta Automotive apart from other builders in the overland vehicle arena. They bring their extensive know-how in design, planning, material selection, and safety from the aeronautical industry to the world of overlanding. The Origin Story

DM Vans has a unique and compelling story – the story of Dave and Matt. College friends with different backgrounds and approaches but sharing an extraordinary level of drive, passion, and creativity rooted in their experiences with van life. Dave & Matt founded DM Vans to fill a market gap for high-quality, affordable, and reliable vans. Their journey began with a simple idea: to make van life accessible for everyone. Leveraging their personal experiences of life on the road, Dave and Matt infused their vision into every aspect of the business, ensuring each LV embodies the spirit of adventure and freedom that van life represents.

Built to Last

DM Vans applies their experience living the van life to designing LVs that get people into the outdoors quickly, reliably, and with everything they need for their adventure. A core tenet of van living is that your vehicle needs to be reliable. DM Vans applies that same thinking when designing their LVs for a wide range of uses, from full-time van life to weekend warriors. They know many of their clients won’t live in their LVs, but they ensure the vans can withstand anything you throw at them through their material choices, build processes, and rigorous stress-testing.

Thoughtful + Intentional Design

Having lived the nomadic lifestyle, DM Vans has put in the time (and mileage) to know what works. Every choice in the design process stems from this experience, culminating in LVs that work smarter, not harder. DM Vans chose the RAM ProMaster platform for their LVs, which offers best-in-class capacity and allows them to maximize storage (and your) space. Industry Spotlight: Boreas Campers https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-boreas-campers/ Thu, 18 Jul 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=44393 Boreas Campers has been designing and building offroad camper trailers in Colorado since 2015. When founder and owner Matt Reichel left the construction industry to travel full time in an RV he learned first hand why it’s best to camp off the grid, and when he settled down he knew what features needed to be on a camper built for that purpose.

Boreas Campers trailer

From the beginning, all Boreas Campers models have had a rugged chassis built with 3×2-inch tube steel that is laser cut and powder coated. The frame is specifically designed around independent, offroad suspension, compared to other manufacturers that have offroad suspension ‘upgrades’ on their standard chassis. Having this foundation ensures all units can tackle any terrain thrown at them. For the DIY builder, they sell 16 and 20-foot chassis for you to build your own camper on.

Boreas Campers has been a pioneer in the offroad camper space, starting with a move to composite panels in 2018. Removing wood from the construction of the camper means owners don’t need to worry about rotting, warping or mold from water intrusion. And the lightweight panels offer incredible insulation from both heat and cold.

READ MORE: The Best Gear of Overland Expo PNW

Boreas Campers was also the first US manufacturer to install Cruisemaster suspension standard on all models. Cruisemaster has been building the best offroad trailer suspension for 40 years in Australia and they make the campers tow beautifully on and off the highway.

With three models to choose from, there are options for every setup. With the same heavy-duty chassis, independent suspension, and composite panel construction as the XT, the AT is a great way to access the backcountry on a budget. Pick and choose the features of the XT that you want, nothing more.

A full kitchen, water and propane, solar and battery, hot shower, awning, roof rack, full size spare tire, furnace and more makes the XT the turn-key option for getting off the grid. And at 2,200 lbs dry it’s easily pulled by most mid size SUVs and trucks.

Both the AT and XT boast industry-leading storage and options for carrying toys. Between the oversized toolbox, ample cabin and kitchen cabinets there is 40 sq ft of storage. Add the roof rack with two cross bars, the front hitch receiver that can carry up to three bikes or a 400 lb dirt bike, the optional luggage rack on top of the toolbox, the MOLLE board on the spare tire holder and the rear hitch receiver, and it’s tough to find a toy that won’t fit.

Sleeping for four, with ample headroom with the roof open and a slim size when closed, the EOS-12 can be outfitted with up to 1000w of solar and 1080ah of lithium batteries to make adventuring off-grid in comfort easier than ever.  And the four season capabilities of this model makes the fun last year-round. Recently voted the best offroad camper by Outside Magazine, this unit has a 3,750 lb dry weight that makes it nimble enough to access hard-to-reach spots.

With a founder experienced in both construction and off-grid camping, a focus on innovation, and a simple but user-friendly layout and design, all models from Boreas Campers will make accessing and enjoying the great outdoors a breeze. Because in the end that’s what it’s all about.

Industry Spotlight: CompoCloset https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-compocloset/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=43518 CompoCloset was born from experiences. Their co-founder and CEO, Richard Peter, was “living the van life” with his girlfriend, who suggested they put a composting toilet in their campervan. Richard was sold on the concept of composting toilets: they are better for the environment, and you can stay out and off the grid longer with no need for hookups and no wasted water!

At the time, composting toilets on the market were large, difficult to empty and clean, and it wasn’t uncommon to accidentally overflow the liquids bin (gross!). Richard saw an opportunity to make a sustainable, eco-friendly toilet that works in small spaces, is easy to clean, and (most importantly) doesn’t smell!

This triggered the ideation, creation, and implementation of Cuddy: the world’s first composting toilet that separates solids and liquids, fit’s almost anywhere, has a patented agitator to kickstart the composting process, and a smart LED light to let you know when the liquids bottle is ready to empty.

And oh, what a ride that idea took him on! As most startups do, CompoCloset needed a little help to get the idea rolling, so they started an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. But this wasn’t just a campaign to get funding – it was a campaign to learn what users truly wanted and needed in a composting toilet. So, they asked the community, and they listened. They listened so well, in fact, that they ended up delaying their product release to make sure it was what the community asked for.

From ensuring that ladies could pee freely without concerns of missing the urine diverter, to making the solids bin easy to remove for refreshing, to being able to discreetly empty your pee jug without seeing urine sloshing around in an opaque container, CompoCloset heard you. They designed, tested, redesigned, and retested to ensure Cuddy was the best composting toilet solution they could offer.

After the initial Cuddy was shipped, they quickly gathered feedback and made minor adjustments to future designs based on what the community told them. They love hearing from the Compo Crew and continue to provide education, updates to their composting toilet models (enter: Cuddy Lite!), and optional accessories (hello, bamboo lid!) to best serve those who want to sustainably manage their poo!

READ MORE: Overland Expo Trainer Interview: Sarah Batten

CompoCloset is acutely aware of the dire state of our planet, and they want to do their part to save it. From providing education about safely managed sanitation to sustainable packaging solutions to buying back carbon offsets, they are as passionate about saving the planet as they are about managing waste!

Going forward, CompoCloset is committed to striving to design better, safer composting toilets for everyone, making sanitation more accessible and sustainable to support people on their journeys.

Industry Spotlight: Outdoorsy https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-outdoorsy/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=43512 Outdoorsy is a crew of camping folks running the #1 most trusted RV rental marketplace in the world. Overland Expo is one of their favorite events to attend as a team because they love meeting overlanders rolling in from all corners of the country.

They’re stoked to be heading to Overland Expo PNW in just a few weeks. They’ll be at booth A438.

Their group will also be camping on-site the whole time. This gives them extra moments to build connections beyond the event itself. All attendees of Overland Expo PNW can camp on-site too. You can even rent an adventure rig from one of Outdoorsy’s nearby hosts.

A Bit More About Outdoorsy

Outdoorsy’s mission is to help people restore their connection with the outdoors. They started back in 2014 when founders Jen and Jeff sold their sticks and bricks, left corporate life behind, and took to the road on a business-building journey.

They spent that first year immersing themselves in the RVing and camping communities to build a world where more people get outdoors. Thousands of conversations and campfires later, Outdoorsy launched its platform to help adventure vehicle owners rent their unused nights to outdoor-craving guests.

Fast forwarding to today, Outdoorsy has hosted well over one million trips, expanded into glamping, and even a couple of campgrounds of their own. Even though they’ve grown up a bit, it’s still central to their mission to connect with the community. And that’s why you’ll find them at places like Overland Expo.

Camping at Overland Expo PNW

To camp on-site at Overland Expo, you’ll need a camping pass. You can choose from premium or general weekend pass options with camping. You won’t be able to camp without one of those, so be sure to get a pass in advance.

READ MORE: A Newcomer’s Guide to Overland Expo – PNW Edition 2024

If you buy a camping pass, you can participate in happy hours every evening at the Oasis Bar and Food Court sponsored by Toyo Tires, and there’s also a really great sense of community with the other campers. You meet lots of cool people and spend time with them over the weekend—this sense of community adds a whole extra dimension to the experience!

Essentials for Overland Expo Camping:

  • On-site camping is the best way to build new friendships, connections, and community at the event.
  • Camping is festival-style in a grassy field; there are no hookups available.
  • Overlanding is a tight-knit community of nimble rigs. Because of this, no RVs, travel trailers, or Class A or Class C-style motorhomes are allowed in the camping areas.
    • Rooftop tents, ground tents, and small overland vehicles (e.g. small campervans) are allowed.
  • Fur friends can camp with you. Be sure to read the pet rules before arriving.
  • Quiet generators are allowed but must be turned off by 10 PM.
  • Kakadu is a favorite when it comes to overlanding showers. They’ll have several of their portable units around as the official Shower Sponsor of Overland Expo.
Prep as you would for an overland-style camping experience out in the wild (e.g. wet-wipe style cloths for the couple of nights you camp out).
  • Porta-johns are available for answering nature’s call.

Renting with Outdoorsy for Overland Expo PNW

If you don’t have an adventure rig of your own or just want to snag something that’s a better fit or closer to the venue, Outdoorsy can help.

They built this page to highlight campers for rent near the venue that will fit in the campground at Overland Expo PNW. That landing page is also targeted to the event dates, so if you see a rig on that page, it’s available for you to take to the expo.

Renting on Outdoorsy is a piece of cake. Many of their hosts have an ‘instant book’ so you can click and get immediate confirmation of the rental. Other hosts have their listings set to request to book with them. In that case, the host will have a short conversation with you to ensure you get everything you need and then confirm the booking. That process usually finishes within a day.

Trust and safety is the name of Outdoorsy’s game. They provide insurance and roadside assistance for every rental and their support team helps quickly via phone, email, or chat.

You could even have one of their rental vehicles delivered right to the Overland Expo PNW campground, so it’s ready and waiting for you when you arrive.

Outdoorsy hopes you’ll come see them at booth A438 while you’re in Redmond. They’d also love to catch you at the campground and/or help you rent a camping rig for the event. Happy trails!

Industry Spotlight: The Escapod TOPO2 https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-the-escapod-topo2/ Thu, 06 Jun 2024 11:17:04 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=43381 In the ever-evolving world of outdoor gear, having equipment that can withstand the toughest challenges is essential. The body construction of the Escapod TOPO2 sets it apart from the competition, offering unmatched strength and durability. Let’s delve into the key features that make the TOPO2 teardrop stand head and shoulders above its competitors when it comes to ruggedness and reliability. No matter your camping style, TOPO2’s construction is designed to withstand the harshest conditions and keep you camping uncompromised.

Premium Materials for Endurance

At the core of TOPO2’s superiority lies the use of premium materials in its construction. Escapod has carefully selected high-quality, rugged materials that excel in challenging outdoor environments. Every component is engineered to withstand impact, shocks, and daily wear and tear. This attention to material selection ensures that the TOPO2 can endure the demands of your adventures, keeping it functional and reliable for years to come.

This standard carried into the development of the body of the TOPO2. When transitioning from standard wood aluminum construction to fiberglass, Escapod knew they wanted to do it differently. Other trailer manufacturers use fiberglass as a shell to cover a pre-existing structure. The TOPO2 is constructed using the method of infusion, which gives the body its strength eliminating the need for any additional structures.

Designed for All Terrain

Outdoor adventures often entail rough and unpredictable terrain. The TOPO2’s body construction incorporates impact-resistant design elements to protect the internal components from shocks and falls. Reinforced edges and shock-absorbing materials contribute to the trailer’s ability to handle drops and impacts without compromising its functionality.

When exploring the great outdoors, encountering water and dust is inevitable. The fiberglass trailer body is constructed by infusion creating a seamless monocoque one-piece body infused with PET core, making it water and dust resistant. This means you can confidently take the device through rain, rivers, or dusty trails without fear of damaging its internal components. With TOPO2, you can focus on your adventure, knowing your gear is well-protected against the elements.

READ MORE: A Newcomer’s Guide to Overland Expo – PNW Edition 2024

Lightweight without Compromise

Despite its robust construction, the TOPO2 remains one of the lightest teardrop trailers, coming in at 1,920 lbs dry. Escapod has struck a perfect balance between durability and weight, making this overland camper trailer towable by vehicles you already have. The TOPO2 is an ideal companion for extended trips allowing you to stay nimble and agile in your travels.

Rigorous Testing for Reliability

The body construction of the TOPO2 isn’t merely an assembly of parts; it is the result of extensive research and rigorous testing. Escapod understands the importance of producing a product that can withstand extreme conditions. Each unit undergoes many quality tests throughout the build process to ensure it lives up to its promises.

In the realm of outdoor gear, the TOPO2 stands out as a symbol of strength, durability, and reliability. Its superior body construction, featuring premium materials, rigorous testing, impact resistance, water and dust resistance, ergonomic design, and lightweight build, sets it apart from its competitors. With simpler systems, the TOPO2 may offer a better, cheaper alternative to camper vans and vanlife. The TOPO2 is the ultimate companion that can withstand the challenges of nature while keeping you prepared for any adventure that comes your way.

Industry Spotlight: Midland USA GXT67  https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-midland-usa-gxt67/ Thu, 16 May 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=42413 Now’s the time to gear up for off-road and overlanding adventures along the North Rim Grand Traverse in Arizona, The Alpine Loop in Colorado, or Corolla Beach in North Carolina. Planning for trips on the trail means ensuring the rig is ready to go and packed with the necessary gear and gadgets for a safe, enjoyable adventure. Reliable communication is at the top of the list- making safety and connection a priority.

Midland’s new GXT GMRS 5-Watt Two-Way Radio – GXT67 PRO brings serious power to the trails.

With a full 5 Watts, the GXT67 PRO is a handheld powerhouse, transforming the way off-roaders and overlanders communicate while traveling along the trail. It’s with these 5 Watts that users can reach maximum two-way radio range as this handheld brings clear communication to heavily obstructed areas. This allows off-roaders and overlanders to increase the distance between their rig and others along the way. Not to mention, the 5 Watts improves two-way radio clarity, making sure nobody misses a message.

Midland’s first-ever repeater-capable handheld, the GXT67 PRO, will keep off-roaders and overlanders connected by extending two-way radio range to new distances. Repeaters act as a combination of a radio receiver and a radio transmitter. They receive a signal and transmit it so that two-way radios can cover longer distances and navigate obstructions. This makes repeaters the middleman, which is why they’re so important in improving radio range.

The GXT67 PRO brings portability to power by giving adventurers the ability to easily communicate in and out of the vehicle. Use the GXT67 PRO with a MicroMobile to navigate obstacles, spot along the trail, and help others with recoveries.

With its heavy-duty design, the GXT67 PRO will handle anything the environment throws its way. Its IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating means reliable communication when rain pops up, or adventurers hit the water for kayaking, fishing, etc. Off-roaders and overlanders can trust knowing their handheld will bring them safety and lifelong memories through connection, no matter where they are.

The GXT67 PRO boasts a long-lasting battery life that keeps its users communicating throughout their adventure. Lasting up to 5 days in standby, this handheld powerhouse rapidly recharges in just 4 hours, ensuring it’s keeping everyone in touch for navigation and safety along the way. The GXT67 PRO comes with a desktop charger, AC wall adapter, 6ft USB-C charging cable, and a clip-on DC vehicle charger so users can power it up along the way.

Not only does the GXT67 PRO bring safety through connection and communication, but it also features NOAA Weather Alert Radio. NOAA Weather Alert Radio brings the latest, most accurate information straight from the National Weather Service, so if severe or inclement weather enters the area, GXT67 PRO users can act accordingly and get to shelter as quickly as possible.

Midland’s GXT67 PRO also ensures a powerful two-way radio connection without an intimidating setup. This handheld’s intuitive menu interface, featuring a keypad lock, makes it easy for off-roaders and overlanders to select their settings without worrying about them accidentally changing.

Whether it’s letting others know of a particularly difficult obstacle on the trail, asking for help when vehicle issues arise, or simply talking back and forth at base camp, the GXT67 PRO brings exceptional communication to any adventure, making it a must-have item before hitting the road.

Industry Spotlight: Kakadu Outback Shower https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/overland-expo-kakadu-outback-shower/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 22:47:41 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=40703 Overland Expo has partnered with Kakadu to provide hot showers in private showering tents for all our camping attendees at the Overland Expo West and PNW events. See the end of the article for information on how you can try out the Kakadu Outback Shower system firsthand at Overland Expo West in May or Overland Expo PNW in June.

With over 80 years of heritage in the Australian market through its sister brands, KAKADU has long been an innovation leader in developing and delivering products that help its customers go further and stay longer in the Australian outback and now in other remote locations around the world. KAKADU most recently launched in the US in May 2023.

The KAKADU product philosophy is underpinned by a steadfast focus on innovation, performance, and comfort. This can be seen across the board from their range of portable, fully contained wood fire cookers known as the “Ozpig” to the unique Cot Tent, the traditional Aussie bed roll known as the Swag and the market leading, multi-award-winning Outback Shower. The global team at KAKADU live and breathe life in the outdoors.

The R&D team, headquartered in Brisbane, Australia is on the doorstep of some of the best overlanding terrain in the world. Head west and you’re touring over red dirt in a matter of hours, head north and you’re deep in ancient World Heritage listed rainforest or jump the barge and skip over to the world’s largest sand island K’gari. The constant in the land in this part of the world is it is remote, rugged and filled with more animals that can kill you than any other part of the world. The importance of good design that can’t let you down is a need not a want in this part of the world.

There is no substitute for real world experience and with countless hours spent overlanding some of the most remote and unforgiving tracks the KAKADU team have clearly come up with a formula to develop some truly unique, game changing product. Asked what the secret to the development is Global CEO, Justin Casey says ‘We believe the best ideas come from experience, there is no doubt that some of our most successful products start with one of the team sitting around a campfire, cold beer in hand kicking off a conversation with “wouldn’t it be great if”…

When asked about the products that the team is most proud of, Justin says ‘it’s tempting to talk about the Outback Shower as the market leader in fully portable, instant hot water; however, it’s the products that are so simple in their design that you often hear the comment ‘why didn’t I think of that’ when referring to them. We love the simplicity of the KAKADU Cot Tent. It’s what you get when a cot meets a tent, the ultimate one-person sleep solution. It keeps you up off the ground, meaning you’re dry, warm, and safe from snakes, and it gives you full protection from the elements and even helps regulate the temperature with the 3000mm waterhead rated, Blockout coated fly. It sets up in a matter of seconds and packs away to fit into the back of your truck.

If you are interested in seeing the Kakadu Outback Shower in action, Overland Expo has partnered with Kakadu to provide hot showers in private showering tents for all our camping attendees at the Overland Expo West and PNW events. The Kakadu showers will be located at both the weekend pass camping and premium camping areas of the venues starting Thursday evening and running through Sunday morning. 6 to 8 shower stalls can be found at each location and will be available between 6:30 am and 8:00 am each morning and then again between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm each evening. Shower use will be limited to 8 minutes per person to keep wait times short and to properly manage fresh water use and gray water production.

This will be a great opportunity for our camping attendees to try out the Kakadu Outback Shower system. For those who fall in love with the idea of easy, hot showers while out on the trail, units will be available for purchase at the event. In addition to how showers, the system is also great for use in your camp kitchen. A demonstration unit will be at the Culinary and Backcountry Pavilion, where our teaching chefs will be using them to wash dishes between classes.

Industry Spotlight: Winnebago Revel https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-winnebago-revel/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=40476 Since 1958, Winnebago® has been the gateway to go beyond the beaten path to discover the places that allow us to rediscover ourselves. And with overlanding making hearts pound, Winnebago has done more than keep up. They embrace the innovation that gets you where you want to go with comfort and ease.

The New Winnebago Revel

Winnebago launched the first Revel® in 2018. And backcountry adventurers fell in love. Never ones to settle, Winnebago keeps pushing the boundaries of off-grid, off-road travel and the new Revel has emerged. Built with their legendary quality, it’s the ultimate ready-to-go, go-anywhere adventure van.

This mobile basecamp is built on the all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz® Sprinter chassis with a 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine delivering over 330 foot-pounds of torque to take on unruly terrain.

But the folks at Winnebago know it doesn’t stop with the drive-train. They understand the essentials of adventure travel. So, a revamped rooftop cargo space with custom side rails keeps gear secure. Loading and unloading are easier with a rear-mounted ladder. Night travelers will love the dual off-road 10-inch light bars cranking out 22,000 lumens to light the trails ahead. Off-road, getting stuck is a huge bummer. So, the Revel comes equipped with custom performance wheels and BF Goodrich® all-terrain tires that make off-roading fun – not frustrating.

Heading off-grid used to mean giving up comfort. But not with the Revel. Inside, a modern lounge invites relaxation. There are reclining seats for added comfort, and whether you are working remotely, eating, or playing a wicked game of cards, a bigger wall-mounted table has the space you need. The best on-the-go comforts of home? Good chow. And Revel’s galley makes it possible. More counter space for prep, plus a drop-down exterior table to take it outside with the portable induction cooktop. And since there’s no grocery store off-grid, they’ve included plenty of storage, with soft-close drawers. Compression latches reduce offroad noise and vibration. Even on rough trails, everything stays put.

Nothing stops the good times faster than running out of water. But Winnebago custom-designed and molded a 35-gallon freshwater tank to make the most of every square inch so you can keep the party going. In the Revel, you can even enjoy a nice hot shower after a long day enduring the elements. The flexible wet bath has a middle-split door for more room to move and dry off your wet gear. A removable shelf also functions as an extra storage closet when not in use.

The ultimate creature comfort? The customer-favorite WinnSleep® mattress technology. A power lift bed serves as a comfy place to crash on top, and a flexible gear garage below with room for all your necessities. Creating comfortable, convenient multi-purpose cabins is where Winnebago truly crushes it.

And now your off-grid adventures can last longer than ever with the Revel’s enviable new Winnebago Power Max system. Fueled by a Lithionics® GTO battery, the Winnebago by EcoFlow® Power Hub Pro is an exclusive 5-in-1 system that delivers unprecedented off-grid power for up to 7 days. Its unique dual alternator approach to high-speed charging optimizes energy, and beats out the competition to maximize driving, idle, shore and solar power.

To give Mother Nature a little less control over your camping season, the Revel features a multi-zone hydronic heating system with an independent loop sensor to prevent your freshwater from freezing. The combination of 3M™ Thinsulate™ insulation with honeycomb flooring and gap-free coverage keep temps comfortable. A touchscreen makes controlling this thermal ecosystem simple.

So, if you’re looking for the freedom to get up and go whenever – and wherever – you want, this turn-key, rugged explorer is the rig for you. Adventurers have trusted Winnebago’s quality and service for over 66 years, and with the new off-grid, off-road Revel, you can go farther and stay longer.

Industry Spotlight: The Bush Company https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-the-bush-company/ Thu, 19 Oct 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=38162 Creating quality gear that outlasts the buyer has been a passion of Dean Gurney and his family for many years. The Bush Company, and in particular the AX27™ rooftop tent, is the culmination of years of manufacturing experience, combined with a desire to create quality and reliable products for the offroad industry.

Growing up in South Africa, Dean spent a lot of time on Safari in the bush, exploring many parts of the African continent that most people will never see. As he got older, he took that same passion he had for his homeland and started exploring Australia, The United States, and many other parts of the world. He migrated to Australia in 2015.

The first step into the offroad manufacturing space was in 2007. Dean began producing freestanding 270-degree awnings, which were innovative for their time. The awning was strong enough to stand without poles until the wind gusted over 20mph, and then it was time to pack it away.

In 2012, Dean created the first edition of The Bush Company’s Roof Top Tent. A simple and robust hard-shelled tent made from folded alloy, steel, and heavy-duty canvas. At this point, rooftop tents were in their infancy, and most “hard” ones were fiberglass, lightweight, and predominantly suited to European climates. They needed a product that could withstand the harshest deserts and the most rugged conditions of Africa and Australia. Dean took his knowledge of manufacturing and his extensive travel experience and combined them to create the first tent. This tent has been tested and used on six of the World’s seven continents and is still sold today as the “Classic” Roof Top Tent.

It was time to step it up a notch, and the AX27™ was developed. The AX27™ Roof Top Tent was essentially the second generation of tents for The Bush Company. Testing was started in 2015 before finally being released to the market in 2018. Dean was focused on setting his tent apart from the competition by providing solutions to common problems faced by long-term overlanders and dedicated explorers.

The problem with adding a rooftop tent to most vehicles is a reduction in roof storage space. Traditionally, a roof rack would hold items like recovery boards, solar panels, and other gear, which is no longer possible with many rooftop tents. Another issue was finding a true four-season tent that felt spacious, considering some people used it as their only bedroom for months at a time.

Dean and The Bush Company team were able to combat all of these problems with the AX27™. First, they increased the opening angle, offering a 1.7m internal height at the tallest point. This helped the tent feel larger when staying in it for extended periods. The second innovation was in the canvas. They created a dual-layered canvas tent and added numerous air vents, which offered better ventilation reducing condensation. It also provided additional insulation and protection from water ingress.

Another major innovation of the AX27™ was The Bush Company’s ‘Ezi-slot’™ system. With the creation of a custom alloy extrusion, Dean and the team allowed for the simplistic addition of accessories around and on top of the tent. This allowed for items like recovery boards, high-lift jacks, shovels, lights, solar panels, and so much more to be effortlessly bolted to the tent.

The AX27™, along with its big brother, the TX27™ dual folding tent, and all the other gear from The Bush Company, are still made and manufactured in South Africa from primarily South African material. Dean, his family, and the whole team are proud of their quality-driven workmanship that provides the gear to last in the most unexplored places on earth.

Industry Spotlight: Duration Health https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/industry-spotlight-duration-health/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=37674 When a medical emergency happens in a remote area, having the right medications on hand can literally mean the difference between life and death. Duration Health Founder and CEO Dr. Benjamin Jack created the company’s hospital-grade medical kits after seeing patients in rural ERs who died because they couldn’t get to the hospital in time.

Since its launch in 2019, Duration Health has redefined overland first aid with its doctor-prescribed medical kits. Before your trip, you go online and talk with one of their wilderness medicine doctors. They prescribe you medication you might need if you get sick, like antibiotics or EpiPens. This allows you to have the medications in your vehicle so that if you do get sick, you already have everything you need to get well.

“As wilderness medicine doctors, we have easy access to emergency medications for when we go off-grid, but what is everyone else supposed to do?” said Dr. Jack. “Duration Health makes it possible for anyone to get emergency medications and supplies for travel to a remote area where medical care may be out of reach or nonexistent.”

The Overland Med Kit

Duration Health recently launched the Overland Med Kit, specifically tailored to the needs of overlanders. The Overland Med Kit includes medications to treat wound infection, intestinal illness, tick-borne illness, Lyme, allergic reactions and poison ivy, cuts and bites, swimmer’s ear, pink eye, and more.

The Overland Med Kit includes Rx medications like amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin ophthalmic, doxycycline, mupirocin, ondansetron, prednisone, triamcinolone, and more. In addition to these base items, every kit can be customized with over 70 other items.

Every kit includes a pre-trip online consultation with a Board-Certified physician to customize your kit and issue prescriptions. Medications are available for both adults and kids.

“There are already a ton of great first aid kits on the market, but none of them have these potentially lifesaving medications because they require a doctor’s prescription. We provide the doctor via an online visit, plus the required prescriptions and the medication,” said Dr. Jack. “We built the Overland Med Kit to accompany the basic first aid kit you already have and turn your vehicle into a traveling hospital.”

Duration Health even carries EpiPens to treat anaphylaxis and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to treat sudden cardiac arrest.

“People assume that they’ll have time to get help, but that’s not the reality. An allergic reaction from a single insect sting can kill a healthy person in under an hour. The chance of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest drops by 10% for every minute defibrillation is delayed,” said Dr. Jack. “We provide medication and equipment to treat these and other worst-case scenarios. Every kit includes an online consultation with a physician, so we can help you think through what items you might need based on where you’re traveling, with whom, and for how long.”

Free Field Guide

All Duration Health Med Kits include a 122-page printed Field Guide with triage and treatment protocols for common issues and emergency situations.

The Field Guide covers more than 30 categories, including abdominal pain, nose and sinus, envenomation and bites, eye and ear, heat stroke, and pediatrics.

The company also makes the Field Guide available for free online, in your browser, or as a downloadable PDF.

Go Where There Is No Doctor

“Be ready for a medical emergency when you go off-grid,” said Dr. Jack. “When you’re off-road, hours from the nearest hospital, no one is coming to help. You are the help. There’s no excuse not to be prepared.”
