Since its inception in 2009, Overland Expo has grown exponentially, expanded to five events across the United States, each featuring hundreds of vendors, over 100 presenters, trainers, and VIPs, and nearly 500 session hours of education. With so much to do during the event, it can be both exhilarating and a bit overwhelming for the first-time attendee to an Overland Expo.

Here’s a brief introduction to what we have going on, along with some tips to get you going, whether you’re an Overland Expo veteran or a newcomer experiencing all the excitement for the first time.

Things to Do Before You Arrive

First things first. If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, head over here and do that. With your tickets in hand, be sure to download the Overland Expo app from your phone’s app store (links below). The official app gives you access to the event map, event schedule, and an easy way to find the vendors or classes you are looking for. Once you have the app, be sure to select “Overland Expo Mountain West 2025” as the event and let it download the event-specific data.

Once you arrive, the overland world is your oyster. Here are the highlights to get you on your way:

Educational Opportunities

A huge part of our event revolves around education. Classes are open to everyone and run all day long in our education pavilion, and the DIY area. There are a ton of classes ranging from cooking classes to electrical and solar systems, first aid on the road, border crossings, overland marketing, and nearly two hundred other classes.

We have a number of education areas dedicated to overland instruction. Each of these locations have an broad focus or educational theme tying the classes offered there together.

For people newer to the overlanding world or people looking to refresh their skills, be sure to check out the classes in the Overland Essentials Area. There you can get a thorough education on foundational skills like trip planning, map reading and navigation, communications, and what to do if something goes wrong, among many other topics. Highlights include Graham Jackson’s How to Plan Your Overland Trip, a perennial favorite, and Jason Specht’s Route Building 101, along with a host of other great classes from new and returning instructors.

For those looking to deepen their backcountry skills or up their camp cooking game, there will be classes just for you all weekend long at the Backcountry & Culinary Pavilion sponsored by Rugged Luxury Motors. Among the laundry list of great classes offered, check out “Ceviche in the Wild” with Top Chef Alum Chad White and Zach Elseman’s Splint Happens: Improvised First Aid for Overland Travel.

Looking to expand your technical skills up close and personal? Come by the Hands-on Pavilion. We have great classes and demonstrations throughout the event. Here you’ll find classes on trail tire repair, the Overland Radio Hands-On Lab taught by Scott Jensen, several first aid classes by Lee Vernon, as well as some great map and compass classes. That’s just the start of what you can find there all weekend long. Check out the full offerings on the app.

For those seeking adventure inspiration, the Storytelling Pavilion will be the hub of great adventure storytelling all weekend. We have a stunning lineup of people who have traveled the globe and will be sharing the inside stories behind their travels, including the good, the bad, and the ugly of extended travel. You can’t go wrong with any of the presentations planned for the weekend, but you don’t want to miss Patty Upton’s The Epic Voyager of the Sand Ship Discovery. She and her late husband Loren circumnavigated the globe in a 1966 Jeep CJ–5, spanning over 5 years and 56,000 miles, including a Guinness Book of World Records entry for the “First All-Land Crossing of the Darien Gap. You can hear all about their adventures on Saturday at 11:00.

The Women Who Wander programming has been an increasingly popular part of Overland Expo since its start just a few years ago. Come to the Women Who Wander Pavilion sponsored by Chrysler, where a wide variety of women-oriented classes, roundtables, and get togethers will offered throughout the event. Classes range from tips on offroad driving to mastering your offroad vehicle components, to safety and security as a solo female adventurer. Come help kick off the weekend’s adventures on Friday at 9:00 am for the Welcome and Community Conversation for Women Who Wander (or Who Think They Might Like to).

The Learning Lab sponsored by Wanderbox will make its debut at Overland Expo MW this year. The educational space is intended to provide more intensive education for those looking to do a deeper or more advanced dive into a given topic or area. The instructor / attendee ratio is smaller in this teaching area, allowing for open dialogue and complex learning. Topics range from budgeting to solo travel to mounting a conservation-oriented expedition among so many more topics.

For those wanting to go deeper into a topic, the Round Table Pavilion hosts roundtable panels and Q&A sessions with our experts. Topics vary across a broad range from budgeting to travel medicine to bringing your pet along for the adventure. Additionally, there are a number of regional Q&A’s happening all weekend long. If there’s a destination, domestic or abroad you’ve been dreaming about, there’s probably a roundtable for you. Here’s your chance to interact with the people who have done what you want to do.

If you have kids with you, be sure to check out the Kids Adventure Area, where we have kid-centric classes and adventure activities running all weekend long. The Kids’ RC Driving course is a particularly popular option. While the education is oriented toward kids, there is still a lot of great content for parents looking to bone up on their backcountry skills alongside the next generation of overlanders. One important note – parents need to stay with their kids at these classes.

Check out the Overland Expo app for a full schedule of classes.

Vendors

No doubt, the vendor area is one of the most popular parts of Overland Expo. This year, our Mountain West event will have more than 350 vendors there, with those numbers growing every day. Just about anything overland-related you can imagine can be found for sale, but the most enjoyable thing may be just wandering around and discovering new and interesting kit. You’ll find some in-booth demos, giveaways, and demonstrations going on in the vendor area – a further reward for wandering about a bit. The complete list of vendors can be found here.

You’ll find exclusive deals aplenty throughout the area, with some vendors offering their best prices of the year. If there is something particular you are looking for, check out our evolving show specials list to see some of the best deals to be had.

Adventures for Pint Sized Overlanders at Overland Expo Mountain West https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/adventures-for-pint-sized-overlanders-at-overland-expo-mountain-west/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 15:51:16 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51736

Overland Expo Mountain West is just around the corner, and if you’re bringing your pint-sized adventure buddies, you don’t want to miss out on the family-friendly program. All weekend long, there are great opportunities for kids to get involved with the fun, plus parents who are curious about taking their kids on the road have a great chance to learn from some seriously well-traveled parents.

For starters, kids don’t want to miss the RC off-road driving course sponsored by the Overland Expo Foundation. They can steer RC cars around a course that includes all the challenges and obstacles you’re likely to find deep in the backcountry. The course is open all Friday 1 PM – 3:50 PM, Saturday 10 AM – noon, Saturday 1 PM – 3:50 PM, and Sunday 10 AM – noon, so be sure to stop by for miniature off-road action.

If you’re considering taking your family on the road long-term, or maybe you’re just curious how parents even manage such a feat, you need to check out Overlanding as a Kid: What We Packed and What We Learned with the Lostetter Family. Overlanding as a kid is way different than it is for adults. You’re stuck in the car, you need to stay entertained, and there’s never enough space for all your stuff. This class is for kids (and parents!) who want real advice from two kids who have been there. We’ll share what we’ve learned about staying busy on long drives, what we wish we packed, and what we totally didn’t need. We’ll also tell stories about the weird, fun, and crazy things we’ve done, like eating guinea pig or jumping off cliffs, because the best part of overlanding is trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone. Come hang out and get inspired to make your own adventures! The Lostetter family is hosting the session in the Kids Adventure Area on Friday at 11 AM and on Saturday at 9 AM. You can learn more about the Lostetters in the Instructor Spotlight linked below.

Wrapping up the weekend, the Leave It Better than You Found It: A Clean Up Scavenger Hunt kicks off on Sunday at 1 PM. Stop by the Overland Expo Foundation Booth to participate in this fun event.

And throughout the weekend, if you’re looking for a spot for the kids to wind down, you can swing by the Kids Adventure Area for Free Time. The Overland Expo team will have art supplies available.

Sneak Peek at the Showcase and DIY Entries of Overland Expo MTN West 2025 https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/showcase-and-diy-entries-mtn-west-25/ Thu, 07 Aug 2025 20:00:20 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51506 Overland Expo MTN West is fast approaching, and with it, one of our favorite portions of the show: the Showcase and DIY Vehicle Area. For those uninitiated, this is a curated space where attendees can see a gathering of unique, customized overland rigs and gather with fellow enthusiasts. It’s a section of the show meant to inspire, to awe and to connect. Attendees can see variety of build styles, learn about mods, and connect with the owners of these impressive rigs.

A little background on the Showcase and DIY Area: Folks submit applications to take part in the Showcase and DIY Area. Our team selects applications based off of their vehicle’s attributes, travel history (has it actually been out doing the dang thing??) and the backstory of the vehicle’s owners. Each of the vehicles selected are scheduled for a designated time slot during the weekend’s festivities, in which the owners will give tours of their vehicles. Attendees are welcome to walk through the area at any time during show hours, and can request a vehicle tour from any vehicle owner. It’s a great way to make new friends, share stories and learn!

In anticipation of the event, here’s a sneak peek at a small selection of the vehicles that have traveled from across the globe to meet us in Colorado. Whether you’re daydreaming about your ideal rig, want to get inspired to make some mods on what you’re currently driving or simply want to share some high fives and good vibes, the Showcase and DIY Area is a can’t-miss installation of Overland Expo Mountain West.

The Lostetters: 2010 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 5.7V8 4×4

About The Lostetters:

The Lostetters, otherwise known as Overland For Good, are an adventurous family who just returned from their 18-month journey down the Pan American Highway, traveling through Central and South America. Passionate about overlanding, they document their experiences to inspire others to explore the world on their own terms. Known for their down-to-earth, practical advice, Overland For Good shares insights on everything from vehicle preparation and route planning to budgeting and living on the road. Their mission is to make overlanding accessible to all, offering real-world tips, honest cost breakdowns, and unforgettable travel stories. Follow @OverlandForGood for inspiration, guides, and a glimpse into their life on the road.

About the rig:

We swapped out the factory bed for a Summit Expedition Trucks 90×80″ bed, complete with four storage boxes to keep our gear organized and easily ready. We purchased a used, non-cabover Phoenix Camper. We completely gutted it and built a layout that suits our family’s specific needs. With Arctic Turn windows and a thoughtfully designed interior, we’ve crafted a space that’s cozy, functional, and so far has been able to handle extreme weather conditions even with the pop-up feature. The pop top adds an extra 2 feet providing extra height for bunk beds and windows with lots of air flow. We can even sleep with the top down (Patagonia Protocol – Lillian on the floor Case in bed with us.) in bad weather, maintaining full access for cooking and daily activities. With a bit of prep, we can fit the whole setup into a high cube shipping container. It’s been a great home these past years.

The Lees: 994 Stewart & Stevenson LMTV M1079

About the Lees:

Mike and Deb Lee are longtime Overland Expo instructors, and recently sized-up their rig.

About the rig:

Our as yet un-named rig is a 1994 Stewart & Stevenson LMTV M1079. He came with the Van Shop modification which provides a large box (habitat) with 5 big windows. When our rig served, he would have been able to provide a variety of services to our military men and women in the field. Our new home is powered by a 3116 Cat diesel engine, a 7 speed Allison transmission and rolls down the trail on 395/85R20s. The sun and Battle Born provide our house power and we have 100gal of water to keep us out for a long time. We are in the process of making our new rig into a fully self-contained Overlanding home so come on by and check out our progress.

Edmund Haemmerle: 2024 Tesla Cybertruck

About the rig:

The pickup and truck Camper are 18 feet long. I also have a super modified travel trailer that at times we tow together. That total length is approximately 38 feet.

Planning Group Trips: How to Herd Kittens Without Losing Your Mind

August 22, 9-10 AM, Backcountry & Culinary Pavilion Sponsored by Rugged Luxury Motors, LLC

Planning a group trip can feel like herding kittens, but with the right approach, it doesn’t have to be chaos. Christian Riesenmy will share key strategies for keeping things organized and enjoyable, from securing early check-ins and setting a comfortable pace to balancing group needs, finances, and flexibility. He’ll cover how breaking into smaller groups on certain days can allow for different interests and energy levels while keeping everyone happy.

Overlanding as a Kid: What We Packed and What We Learned

August 22, 11 AM – 12 PM, Kids Adventure Area

Overlanding as a kid is way different than it is for adults. You’re stuck in the car, you need to stay entertained, and there’s never enough space for all your stuff. This class is for kids (and parents!) who want real advice from two kids who’ve been there.

Medicine in the Wild: Improvised First Aid

August 22, 1-2 PM, Hands-on Pavilion

Being stuck in the wild while injured presents obstacles that, if not addressed, can be deadly. In this intensive hands-on session, we will show you how to create improvised life-saving devices such as tourniquets, splints for broken bones, stretchers for carrying someone out, and other basic fundamental skill sets that would need to be improvised in a worst-case scenario.

Tread Smart: Mastering Tires & Air Pressure for Off-Roading

August 23. 9-10 AM, Overland Essentials Area

Your tires are the only connection between your vehicle and the terrain, making them one of the most critical components of your off-road setup. But how do you choose the right ones? In this class, Charlene Bower breaks down the different styles of off-road tires – mud, all-terrain, and more that are vehicle specific – so you can make an informed decision as a consumer. You’ll learn how to decode every marking on a tire’s sidewall, from load ratings to ply construction, ensuring you select the best fit for your adventures. And, of course, we’ll dive into air pressures – how adjusting them affects traction, comfort, and performance in different environments. This session isn’t just about knowing tires; it’s about mastering them for ultimate success on and off the trail!

Back to Belize – Adding Conservation and a Mission to Your Overland Trip

August 23, 1-2 PM, The Learning Lab Sponsored by Wanderbox

As a lifelong overlander and expeditioner, Graham Jackson started to realize that the wild places he loved to explore were starting to disappear. Being over-run by visitors, development and industry. As a scientist he thought of ways he could give back to those places yo help preserve them, and in this session he will share ways in which you can also help to preserve the places you love in surprisingly easy ways while adding a mission and a sense of greater purpose to your travels. You don’t have to be a scientist or an educated conservationist to do this, just drawing on your skills as an overlander will put you on a great path if you can understand the simple ways to leverage them. The presentation will be given in the contaxt of an expedition to Belize to complete a failed expedition from years before.

Directing a Driver: Marshaling and Spotting

August 23, 1-2 PM, Women Who Wander Pavilion Sponsored by Chrysler

Connie Rodman

Clear communication between the driver and spotter is critical for navigating difficult obstacles, but if both parties are not on the same page, it can lead to frustration, arguments, tears, and danger. We will work on clear hand signals, how to communicate, and what to look for. All are welcome, and couples are encouraged to attend together.

You can choose your replica from a variety of popular rigs and pilot it around the course to test your driving skills, albeit on a smaller scale.

Come camp in the mountains of Colorado, make friends, win prizes, pilot an RC rig, and maybe find your dream camper (or dream lighting system, radio, tent, portable stove…) at Overland Expo Mountain West, August 22-24, 2025 in Loveland, Colorado.

10 Pieces of Survival Gear to Keep You Prepared for the Unthinkable https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/survival-gear-available-mtn-west-25/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51330 Thinking about the worst case scenario isn’t something most of us like spending our free time engaging in, but there is some benefit to thinking through the worst that can happen — and packing gear in your rig to help mitigate the negative effects of emergencies. Disaster can strike at any time, especially while overlanding off-grid, so maintaining a realistic level of preparedness can go a long way. Here are 10 pieces of overlanding survival gear our editors keep in their rigs at all times — so when things go sideways, you can keep your head on straight.

Editor’s Note: Please keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive, and what supplies you bring with you is determined by where you are going, how long you will be out, and how many people are traveling with you. Consult this list, and do your research before heading out into the backcountry.

First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit should contain survival gear to get you out of a medical emergency or other precarious safety situation.

There are few items more indispensable in an emergency situation than the first aid kit. We like Uncharted Supply Co.’s new Basecamp – 30L thanks to its rugged design and its ability to provide care for a family of four without taking up a ton of room. At almost $800 it’s pricey, but we’d pay this much for peace of mind. If the Basecamp isn’t your bag, Uncharted has a ton of excellent first aid options.

GPS

Yes you have your cellphone’s maps, but in remote areas where cell signal is spotty at best, you’re going to need a Global Positioning System (GPS). Download maps, access reliable navigation and mark specific points of interest (like campsites) that you’ll want to find your way back to later. If you’re going to invest in a GPS (which we really recommend) our editors swear by Garmin: it’s one of the most trusted names in the space, and has built its reputation on being reliable and trustworthy, two attributes highly valued when purchasing a GPS. The Garmin Tread 2 is a solid choice and has recently been updated to better suit the needs of overlanders.

Emergency Comms

One of the most critical tools in your survival kit is undoubtedly some sort of emergency communication device. When cell service is unavailable, satellite communication devices, radios, or other means of communicating that don’t rely on cell service are crucial for communicating with the outside world, whether that’s to request medical aid, coordinate during incidents and just increase overall safety. Our editors like SPOT, which specializes in satellite communication devices that allow users to track assets, send and receive messages, send GPS position and status, mark waypoints, track their progress on SPOT Mapping and notify search and rescue officials in the event of an emergency.

Water and Food Storage

A good rule of thumb when it comes to overlanding is to bring at least 1-2 gallons of water per person, per day. In an emergency, food and water storage should be able to hold three days’ worth of provisions and hydration for each member of your crew. Hydrapak makes portable, lightweight water storage options that can be stored in your rig for emergencies, brought out for day hikes and explorations, or emptied and stored without taking up too much storage space. The brand’s Car Camp Bundle includes a 10-liter water reservoir, a 2-liter lightweight water reservoir that can be frozen in a pinch, plus a water bottle and splash guard.

Spare Fuel Can

One of the most important aspects of safely exploring the backcountry is having enough spare fuel to get you back to civilization in case of emergency. Fuel should be stored in cans specifically made for the purpose. We like Rotopax for its size range, easy mounting design and durabilty. If you’re interested in other brands, check out our guide to the best fuel cans for overlanding.

Sharp Knife

The use cases for a sharp knife are pretty much endless, but we like having an option like a Benchmade Bugout in our glove compartment for situations like: shelter building; preparing fire supplies; food prep; making prepares; preparing wound care supplies; self defense.

Basic Mechanic Tools

If something happens to your rig and you don’t have the basic tools on board to fix it or mend it temporarily — or don’t have a better-prepared friend traveling with you — you are officially SOL, and you’d better hope you packed those emergency comms and food and water storage. For basic tools, we like the ShopRoll from Adventure Tool Company: it keeps everything contained and organized, has what you need for basic repairs and won’t break the bank.

Headlamp

Bringing a headlamp into the backcountry may seem fairly obvious, but in our experience, this is one piece of gear that is easily forgotten, and makes an outsized impact on how your trip goes. Headlamps can be used for navigating unfamiliar terrain, making your way around camp safely, and for nighttime repairs. They’re worth their weight in gold. We like the Biolite Dash 325 thanks to its simple design, long-lasting battery life and ultra-lightweight feel.

Fire Starting Supplies

One of the benefits of overlanding is the ample storage space most rigs have, unlike backpacking or even traditional camping. Thanks to that extra storage space, you can afford to bring multiple types of fire starters — all with a specific purpose. For nightly campfires, you can opt for something a little bulkier like a literal torch — our top picks are the Bernzomatic Trigger Start Torch and the Snow Peak Folding Torch. For emergencies, we’d recommend keeping something small and storable like the Wolf and Grizzly Fire Starter Set on hand — it won’t take up much room, but it could literally be a lifesaver depending on the conditions you find yourself in.

Winch

A winch won’t just save your ass if you get stuck — it will also help others out, as well. If you’ve come up on someone that’s gotten themselves stuck and didn’t have a winch, you know exactly what we’re talking about. We like Warn for their premium quality and excellent customer service.

On the Hunt: Wildlife Photography with Matt Suess at Mountain West https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/matt-suess-mtn-west-25/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51354 mountain west

Overland Expo is excited to welcome Matt Suess, an early adopter of digital photography, to teach at Overland Expo Mountain West.

Matt Suess has been a full-time professional photographer since 1990, with the first 17 years of his career being a photojournalist based in New England. He is a digital photography pioneer and began teaching digital photography to photojournalists in the late 90’s, helping bring digital cameras to two different newspapers.

In 2006 Matt decided to switch careers and moved out West where he has been a fine art landscape, nature, wildlife, travel, adventure, and night sky photographer and educator ever since.

He leads numerous photo workshops worldwide in addition to teaching photography online. He is a Brand Ambassador and sponsored by a number of photo related companies.

He has been slowly building out his 4th Gen 4Runner for Overlanding over the last few years and currently lives in Bozeman, Montana.

Matt will be teaching From Sunset to Stars: Camp-Based Night Photography for Overlanders and On the Road and In the Wild: Photographing Wildlife While Overlanding at Overland Expo Mountain West. To learn more about Matt, check out his website and continue reading below.

Q&A with Matt Suess:

Tell us about your rig:

I have a 4th Gen V8 4Runner that I have been slowly building out for overlanding over the last few years. It has an iKamper RTT, The Princeton roof rack by Sherpa with light bar, ditch lights, Drive Reach Overland cell signal booster from WeBoost. Next up is getting the lift kit done.

All-time favorite campsite:

Out in White Pocket – a very remote area near Coyotte Buttes in Northern Arizona. To get there it’s miles of 4wd dirt road and areas of deep sand requiring airing down.

What’s your go-to overlanding meal?

I like to keep it simple and burgers & dogs you can’t go wrong with. Although a chicken stir-fry is pretty decent on the road too!

Best silver-lining story?

The first night on a 5 night photo adventure, I ended up rolling my ankle 4 miles from camp. I had a first aid kit with me at the time and I wrapped my ankle with an ace bandage, using my tripod as a crutch for the 4 mile hike back to our rig. Fortunately the ice in the cooler was still cold and soaked my ankle in it while of course enjoying a few beers. I thought our trip was over after just getting started, but was able to limp my way through the rest of our travels and I created some amazing photographs. Once back home, the doctor said I had a slight fracture in the ankle, but I got those photos and those memories!

What is an area of overland travel that you think you have nailed, and what is an area of overland travel that you feel you could use some improvement in?

I am pretty proficient in travel comfort and safety with the following: battery packs and solar panels, mini refrigerator, RTT with air mattress, mini stove, propane, mini propane fireplace, portable toilet and screen, max tracks, recovery strap, etc. I could definitely use improvement in being proficient in emergency vehicle mechanics.

Best Gear at Overland Expo PNW 2025 https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/best-gear-at-overland-expo-pnw-2025/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 18:09:53 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50870 Attending an Overland Expo provides the opportunity to see the latest and greatest gear from vendors throughout the country. With 322 exhibitors showing off thousands of products, you’d have been hard pressed to see everything on offer in Redmond, Oregon this year. Fortunately, we spent the weekend scouring the vendor area looking for standout products. Here’s a short list of some of our favorite gear from Overland Expo PNW 2025.

Nomad Wheels – 504 Field Wheels

We’ve always appreciated the look of Nomad Wheels’ designs. Their design approach provides a contemporary form that looks at home on a wide variety of vehicles and eras. Their new 504 Field wheels continue this wide appeal with Nomad’s take on a classic steelie that would feel just as at home on a brand new Land Cruiser or on a fifty-year-old 40 series. The decidedly vintage-modern wheels paired with their optional chrome center caps kept catching our eye throughout the event.

The wheels — manufactured using a Formlite process and made of A356-T6 aluminum for a combination of strength and weight savings — are available in both 16″ and 17″ sizes in a variety of bolt patterns. Expect these to be a popular wheel choice in the overland community.

Exploro – Classic Mark 8

It’s no secret that overlanders love knives and there were some great examples to be found throughout the show. The one that stood out to us the most was the Exploro Classic Mark 8. The photos don’t do it justice; this knife is a work of art — one of those things you can’t help but say “wow” when you come across it. It’s a beautiful example of great design, careful material selection, and one that just felt right in the hand.

Designed and produced by Exploro’s Elias Fedorowski, the Classic Mark 8 is a full flat grind, MagnaCut steel blade complimented by a titanium bolster and all titanium hardware. Our favorite Mark 8 had vintage micarta scales but there were a number of other options on display. Check out more examples of Exploro knives on their Instagram page here.

Jumping Jack Trailers – Tent Trailer

The folks at Jumping Jack Trailers have something truly extraordinary in their tent trailer line. Meant to transport ATVs to adventures beyond the reach of four-wheel drive vehicles, the trailers springs to life with spacious pop-up tents that offer seven feet of headroom in a matter of less than a minute. The trailers are offered in a range of sizes to fit between one and four ATVs with the largest offering space for 8 beds inside. The tent shells are made of a heavy duty 13 oz. marine canvas with double stitched seams and reinforced corners. Each tent configuration has seven large windows to offer plenty of cross ventilation and near panoramic views.

Overland Glovebox Guide App

The biggest buzz of the weekend was the release of the new Overland Glovebox Guide app which made its debut at the event. “OGG” is the brainchild of long time Overland Expo instructor and former director of training Graham Jackson, who brings over 30 years of expedition experience to your phone for easy reference when you need it. The app, which is available for both Android an iOS devices, provides a single point of reference for critical vehicle information, trip notes, maintenance tracking, and Graham’s pre-expedition and daily checklists.

Additionally, the app houses a growing collection of technical guides based on Graham and his team’s vast expedition and training experience. This is the app the overland community has long needed and is well worthy of a spot on your home screen.

Midland Radio GXT67

Overland Expo PNW gave us some hands-on time with one of Midland Radio’s new handheld GXT67 GRMS radio. The 5-watt radio expands Midland’s range of repeater capable GRMS radios while providing up to 4 days of battery life in a rugged, IP67 water and dust proof design.

Despite its laundry list of advanced features, including microphone automatic noise cancelling, the radio seemed to be easy to use, especially with its large, well laid out screen. For those looking to customize the interface, Midland offers an optional programming cable. The radio retails for $199.99.

Kairos Seasonings – Rubs and Sauces

If you came anywhere near Kairos‘ booth, chances are that you caught the aroma of meat on the grill and you probably tried one of their tasty sauces. Our favorite was their Chipotle Hot Sauce, but the others were quite popular as well. The sauces, along with their line of rubs, are locally produced in the Pacific Northwest and are the result of the founder’s desire to find sauces and rubs with high quality ingredients devoid of artificial fillers to go with the direct-from-source beef he was sourcing, as well as with the wild game he was hunting.

They advertise their products made of high-quality ingredients to “the outdoor chef, adventurer, and home BBQ connoisseur” obsessed with the details of their craft. That sounds like a lot of us and we were impressed with Kairos’s offerings.

Kakadu USA – Revived Recliner

Kakadu USA showed off their new (to the US) Revived Recliner. Our team was impressed with both the comfort and the quality of the chair. The new recliner’s four adjustable positions provide a wide variety of options for seating around camp. The canvas of the chair is made from 77 recycled plastic bottles and the bamboo armrests continue the eco-friendly construction. The aluminum legs keep the overall weight of the chair low. The Revived Recliner comes with a heavy duty canvas carry bag and will be available soon for $169.00.

Sandy Vans Port/Starboard Rack and Surf Rack

Sandy Vans’s new surf rack caught our eye as a great addition to their line of Sprinter Van products. The rack mounts to their rear door-mounted port or starboard racks and allows you to carry up to three surfboards securely mounted to the back of your van. The rack is made of aircraft-grade aluminum and weighs in at just 40 pounds. When not in use, the rack folds down and protrudes just a few inches from the rack. If you are looking for a way to securely transport your boards, this seems like a great solution from the engineers over at Sandy Vans.

Geotrek Vans – 2025 Bear Peak and Flatiron Van

Geotrek Vans has a growing reputation for building robust, thoughtful van build outs that are ready for adventure from day one. They had their 2025 Bear Peak and Flatiron vehicles on display this weekend. Both models are built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 144 platform. We were impressed with the clean layouts, attractive materials, and thoughtful integration of the systems. Both models share the same materials and layout with the Flatiron adding some additional systems and capacities such as a larger base battery size and air conditioning standard over the less expensive Bear Peak platform. Both offer a wide variety of optional build upgrades to dial in the van to your specific needs.

Outdoor photographer Chris McCormack continues his Overland Expo Summer Series

Chris McCormack has been one of Overland Expo’s most popular instructors at our East event for several years now, so we were thrilled when he told us he was planning to do a cross-country trip this summer and hit as many Overland Expos as he could. As we head deep into the summer months, Mountain West is nearly upon us and we are excited to continue learning from one of our generation’s greats. Chris is a seasoned travel photographer, motivational speaker and humanitarian who has explored more than 30 countries in the past decade. As a speaker, Chris says his “seminars and presentations are designed to transport audiences into different cultures, encouraging personal growth and a deeper understanding of the world.” You can learn more about Chris, his photography, and the immersive tours he leads around the world at TheChrisMcCormack.net.

Chris has been leading seminars all summer on adventure photography at our Overland Expo events, and we are excited to keep learning from him. His tales of adventures in Iceland, Mongolia and Guatemala are also not to be missed. To learn more about Chris, continue reading below.

Q&A with Chris McCormack:

Tell us about your rig:

2024 Shineray Mustang XY200 – Chinese motorcycle

You can find “better” or more luxurious motorcycles to buy or rent in Mongolia but believe it or not, it might not be in your best interest. If you’re riding in the Steppe of Mongolia, you won’t find any Jiffy Lubes or Advance Auto Parts! All of the nomads who live in the steppe, have the exact same motorcycle! So, if your motorcycle breaks down, you crash, or need to change a blinker, with the Shinery Mustang, you can ask the nomads for help, and 99/100 times, they will be there for you.

All-time favorite campsite:

Mogollon Rim, Coconino National Forest, Payson, AZ, USA

What’s your go-to overlanding meal?

When I’m in the USA – chicken quesadillas

When I was in Mongolia – Goat & Tuna

Best silver-lining story?

In 2016, I landed in Myanmar and went to the ATM at the airport to withdraw local currency, the Kyat. I had just lost TWO debit cards in Bali. I was down to only my credit card. But… when I went to the ATM, it asked me for a pin number… What?! I don’t have a pin number for my credit card! I couldn’t withdraw any money! At the time, debit/credit cards weren’t widely accepted yet so I asked the taxi’s for a quick ride into town and once I figured out my finances I’d give them 10x the amount. As if I told the funniest joke, they laughed so hard at me and pointed to my gold chain as payment for a $5 ride.

With really no other options to get into town, I decided to start walking along the highway. Taxi after taxi would pull over to give me a ride but when I signaled, “No. Money.” with my hands, they sped off.

READ MORE: Experience the Trail Expertise of Ram Trucks at Overland Expo

The 13th taxi driver pulled over and asked me for a ride. At this point, I was losing patience from explaining the same thing, the suffocating humidity, and thick exhaust from the shifting trucks driving by me.

The driver of the 13th taxi spoke English and said, “No problem, get in.” After triple checking and making it 100% clear I had no money to give him, I got in the taxi.

To make a long story short, while I waited for my debit card to be mailed to Myanmar from New Jersey, we spent the next seven days together. He took me to as he said, “special places every tourist needs to see if visiting Myanmar”. He bought and snacks water for me. He paid for my food at restaurants, we took mini road trips together and I spent time with his family in his village.

I will always remember his humbleness, generosity, and kindness.

His name was Aung Zaw OO. He was my guardian angel from Myanmar.

All because I had lost two debit cards.

What is an area of overland travel that you think you have nailed? (e.g. are you a proficient mechanic, provisioner, etc.)

To some it may seem rudimentary but to others it seems impossible. I think I’m really good at always finding a place to stay. I don’t usually book/schedule accommodations or sites in advance, I’d rather keep my options open and have my travel as flexible as possible. Less deadlines = less pressure.

What is an area of overland travel that you feel you could use some improvement in? (e.g. would you like to learn more recipes so your diet while traveling is more varied.)

I definitely need to be better at fixing my own car/motorcycle mechanical problems that pop up every once in a while. Sometimes, I don’t have the proper tools/space to be able to fix everything but I can definitely be better at learning how to fix the rest of the issues.

Experience the Trail Expertise of Ram Trucks at Overland Expo https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/trail-expertise-trucks-mtn-west-25/ Tue, 08 Jul 2025 21:37:11 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51185

Ram Ride and Drive

Ram is bringing a fleet of tough, trail-ready rigs to Overland Expo Mountain West in beautiful Loveland, Colorado, August 22-24. This is your chance to get behind the wheel of these legendary platforms and experience firsthand the trail capability that Ram has been known for since the first Power Wagons rolled off the assembly line nearly 80 years ago.

The Ram Ride and Drive at Overland Expo Mountain West will offer consumers the opportunity to experience the technology, interior refinement, and capabilities of the Ram lineup on a course that mirrors obstacles you’re likely to encounter on an overland adventure. Ram is bringing 1500 and 2500 series pickups, including a variety of trim packages. Attendees can choose to ride along or drive, and an expert Ram ambassador will be with them every step of the way. Sign up for the Ride and Drive at the Ram booth all throughout the weekend. This event is open during show hours all weekend long, from 8am-5pm on Friday and Saturday and from 9am-3pm on Sunday.

On the course, logs and other obstacles show just how the advanced engineered suspensions of the Ram truck lineup handle tough terrain. Cresting and descending steep hills not only highlight the excellent visibility offered by the trucks’ cameras but also the importance of throttle control and off-road driving modes. These obstacles also serve as a proving ground for the off-road-focused geometry of these trucks. The off-road course also features moguls, banked sections, rocky terrain, and more, all of which highlight the stability and ride quality of the Ram fleet. Alongside the off-road experience, Ram brand experts will be available to spotlight features of the Ram truck linkup.

The Best Rigs of Overland Expo PNW 2025 https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/the-best-rigs-of-overland-expo-pnw-2025/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 02:11:26 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51178 Overland Expo was a huge success, and all weekend long, our team loved checking out awesome rigs scattered throughout the exhibitor booths and campground. Each Overland Expo brings out rigs ranging from the wild to mild, and we love to see the gamut of vehicles that our community is using to get out and explore. While it would be impossible to rank all of the rigs at the event, here are some of our favorite rigs from Overland Expo PNW 2025 in no particular order.

Bellfab – Desert Tech Land Cruiser

No matter what generation you choose, the venerable Land Cruiser is a great adventure rig. This particular example started out as a stock 1993 70 Series before getting some upgrades to outfit it for around-the-world travel by the owner of Desert Tech. The most obvious is the pop-top camper that has replaced the rear of the truck. This unit provides room for two to sleep up top, and room for two more in the cargo area. Many years and miles later, it’s now owned by a member of the Bellfab team and sees plenty of adventure.

Overland Expo Training-2023 Ram 3500

There’s full-size, and then there’s FULL-SIZE trucks, and this definitely fits into the latter category. This AEV Prospector XL might look familiar, as it’s owned by the Overland Expo Director of Training, Chris Walker. Chris spends a lot of time on the road for work, but he also heads out for adventures as much as possible. This truck was built with dual purposes in mind. On one hand, it’s capable of towing six snowmobiles or ATVs on a 30-foot trailer into remote locations. The camper from Fifty Ten has a custom-built interior from AT Overland, it’s rolling on 40s, and the tray bed offers plenty of utility.

Trail Ready 1987 Porsche 911

This can definitely be filed under something you don’t see every day, even at Overland Expo. This 87 Porsche 911 features a ton of upgrades that push it from classic European sports car into the realm of adventure rigs that spend more time on the dirt than asphalt. Starting from the ground up, it’s outfitted with Toyo AT3 tires, Bilstein coilovers, Wilwood 4-piston brakes, custom bumpers featuring integrated Baja Designs lights, onboard ARB compressor, Scheelman seats, a Switch Pro, and more. For what it lacks in ground clearance, we’d wager it more than makes up for in the amount of fun you can have on a dirt road.

Guild Outfitters – 2025 Toyota Tacoma

The new Tacomas are becoming more and more common, and we’ve already seen some awesome builds on this new platform. This is a great example from the Guild Outfitters booth that’s owned by Kelly of @adventurebuilt. It’s rolling on 37-inch tires and an Ironman Foam Cell Suspension. Up top, an Ironman rooftop tent is paired with a Prinsu Rack. These upgrades, paired with the trail capability and tech of the new Tacoma, make for an awesome rig all around.

Midland Radio – Overland-ready Nissan Patrol Fire Truck

This rig started life as a fire truck, but with its new owner, Rugged Destination Photography, has seen some awesome upgrades: a Front Runner Rack, Baja Design lights, Threat Wheels, a rooftop tent, and a tray and canopy combo from Summit Expedition Trucks. While the original fire truck markings were covered before it was imported, there are plenty of unique details. Without a doubt, this Patrol will turn heads on the trail and in town.

Nomad Wheels – 1993 FJ80

Another Cruiser, another pop-top, but this is a totally different approach than the previously mentioned example. For starters, this FJ80 is leaning hard into the ’90s vibes with some awesome graphics. Specifically, it’s a 5-speed triple locked diesel 80 that’s left-hand drive from France. On the exterior, a snorkel, a rear tire swingout, solar, an aluminum storage case uptop, and, of course, Nomad wheels, make this rig fully outfitted for adventure and ready for the backcountry. It’s also rocking a 15-gallon water tank in the original spare location, a fridge freezer, Scheelman seats, an AluBox interior, and the Campteq Conversion providing a ton of living and sleeping space in a convenient and easy-to-set-up package.

A True Beauty – 1967 Nissan Patrol

We don’t see that many Patrols at Overland Expo, and even when we do, they’re usually imported rigs. However, this 1967 example was from a short run of Patrols sold in the US from 1962 to 1969. As a matter of fact, it was the earliest Nissan-badged vehicles available here. This particular example was a true barn find from Iowa and belonged to a Nissan employee before finding its way into the Nissan Heritage Collection. It has been restored down to every detail and feels like a true time machine. It’s always great to see a piece of 4×4 history in person.

Supertramp Campers – Ford F250

Ah, the full-size flatbed life. We have to admit that this is tough to beat. A Bowen Customs flatbed plus side boxes provides an absolute ton of storage space. The Supertramp Camper Flagship LT provides 360-degree views, a modern and strong composite interior, and an electric lift system that makes setting up camp a literal push of a button. If you still want to use the F250 for truck stuff, the whole camper can be removed with jacks within minutes. And we’d be remiss not to mention the comfort of traveling in a full-sized rig. Supertramp outdid themselves with this build.

Long Range America – 2000 Land Cruiser 78

Alright, stay with us. Another pop-top style Cruiser, and it’s kind of the middle ground between the Nomad Wheels 80 and the Desert Tech build. The Headspace Camper provides a NYC apartment’s worth of interior space, but when it’s closed, it looks nearly stock. The Long Range America truck hasn’t been built out yet, but we can’t wait to see the interior outfitted. These 70 Series trucks are legendary, and this one has been taken to the next level.

Some of these vehicles will be on site at another Overland Expo this year, along with many other rigs you’ll have to attend an Expo to see for yourself. Buy your tickets for MOUNTAIN WEST or EAST today to be sure to get in on the fun! Click the buttons to learn more and secure your spot!

Overland Expo PNW ’25 Recap https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/overland-expo-pnw-2025-recap/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 15:23:33 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50859 “I’m so inspired here, this is the coolest thing I’ve ever been to. I’m having the best time!”
Katy Noel, attendee at Overland Expo PNW, 2025

Our experience at Overland Expo Pacific Northwest (PNW) 2025 was electrifying. More than 16,500 attendees descended on the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center for the fourth year, seeing approximately 500 MORE attendees than in years past. 322 exhibitors set up booths for attendees to shop products, enter sweepstakes, and grab freebies. The energy was high, and the weather was spectacular.

Whether you were there to discover the latest gear, refine your overlanding skills, or simply bask in the camaraderie of like-minded explorers, the 2025 iteration of Overland Expo PNW surely delivered. Let’s break down everything that made this year’s event one for the books.

The heart of Overland Expo starts with our exhibitors and sponsors. Innovative products and cutting-edge gear provided a little something for everyone. From customized off-road rigs to compact camping solutions and solar-powered tech, there was plenty to ignite adventure and truly inspire. But our Pacific Northwest event is so much more than just exploring the latest gadgets and rigs. It’s about building skills and confidence to take your adventures to the next level.

This year’s education and live demonstrations were nothing short of phenomenal. Attendees had the chance to participate in hundreds of hours of sessions including off-road recovery techniques, navigation skills, cooking in the wild, and MUCH more.

Learning Lab Education Tent

A fan-favorite of Overland Expo PNW was the hands-on training offered by the Overland Expo Training Team, and sponsored by ComeUp Winch USA. Our professional training team spent the weekend teaching driving techniques to eager enthusiasts with classroom-style learning and in-vehicle driving on a custom-built course in participant’s own vehicles – because when you get in a jam, it will likely be in your own rig. Plus, participants were taught Tread Lightly! principles and ethics for responsible overlanding, ensuring the ecology we love will stay pristine for this and future generations.

On Thursday, a full day of training included classroom sessions and on-course training in small groups for a more hands-on experience. This included a winch class, tire repair class, and recovery techniques. On Friday, select times throughout the day were available for attendees to purchase trail course-only time slots for a couple laps around the trail course guided by professional instructors. The Ultimate Build Vehicle got time on the course to showcase how capable it is despite its size and weight. Saturday featured a 3-hour custom-curated training session where each attendee received an exclusive 1:1 experience on and off the trail. A noteworthy rig that did almost a full lap on the training course, was a 1998 Mercedes Benz Actros 2040 4×4 with a 2017 One-off Cabin (18’) – Vehicle is 26’ long. It was an impressive sight to see it travel through the course.

Women Who Wander Community Conversations and Networking Event (not just for ladies) lead by female legends in the overlanding community was a huge success with approximately 150 attendees. Azure O’Neil interviewed world traveler, educator, and longtime Overland Expo trainer Sarah Batten about her history with overlanding and her adventures around the world. After the interview, attendees broke out into groups to discuss camping logistics, navigation, safety & security. A bar and massive charcuterie table were available for attendees.

Women Who Wander

Meanwhile, the Toyota Game Night kicked off with surprise celebrity host, Andy Bell. The booth was PACKED as they served chicken skewer bites and had conversations about who has the most miles, model fan favorites, and answered various questions. Andy made his appearance to kick off game night with a game of bingo followed by a raffle with tons of prizes (2,000 raffle tickets were distributed by Toyota for their raffle).

For those of us who were looking for something a bit calmer, the Overland Expo Film Festival gave the opportunity to sit down and watch some tremendous pieces of art and storytelling created by and about some of the people and landscapes that make overlanding so rewarding. The first film for this event Where the Wild Things Are, by Grace Schuessler, was about the beauty of Oregon’s backcountry wild west and promoted the importance of responsible recreation to protect the adventure for generations to come. The feature film for this event, Latitude 70, by Michelle Francine & Roy Rudnick, took viewers on the fascinating journey of the couple Roy and Michelle, who traveled the world for over three years and four months, traveling 141 thousand kilometers in a total of 51 countries. In this, which was the couple’s second trip around the world by car, the main objective was to reach, by driving, three Latitudes 70°N – one in Alaska, one in Norway, and one in Siberia. In their constant search for great challenges, the couple faces remote regions that few dare to visit, arriving where, literally, the roads end.

While the education really stands out at our Oregon event, we can’t deny a good party when we see one. And there were plenty. Subaru continued their adorable pet adoption, this time partnering with Brightside Animal Shelter. Our very own staff members, Chelsea and Curtis were one of the first to adopt a puppy, but all six dogs found loving homes.

The Overland Expo Foundation charity raffle was full of excited attendees who took home hundreds of prizes donated by our amazing exhibitors, including Nokian Tyres, Gazelle Tents, American Expedition Vehicles, CAMP Eyewear, GOSO Cookware, DECKED, Spyderco knives, Grizzly Knives, TOPS Knives, CIVIVI Knives, InstaPrivy, Overland Glovebox Guide, Gaia, VSSL, DryFoxCo, Rugged Radios, Midland, PACT Outdoors, Ironclad Performance Wear, Lone Peak Overland, LLC, SeaSucker, Tire-Rite Solutions, MORRFlated, and ARB 4×4 Accessories. The raffle gave away over $10,000 in prizes and raised over $20,000 for the Overland Expo Foundation. Over the course of the year, those funds will be used on a variety of projects that protect trail access, introduce new groups to overlanding, and work to clean up heavily impacted areas. Check out last year’s impact, thanks in large part to the fundraising that took place during the raffles.

Across the event, Camp Subaru Live! was a huge hit with food, live music by Nashville artists Cassidy Daniels and Trevor Panarello, wine and beer from pFriem Beer Company, and as always, plenty of fun and good, chill vibes.

Of course, we can’t forget our Happy Hours sponsored by Toyo Tires (Thursday), MAXXIS (Friday), and Pelican Products (Saturday). Every evening, everyone gathered at the Oasis Bar & Food Court. It’s a great time to catch up with friends, enjoy a good drink, and plan for the other evening activities.

Overland Expo is always a busy weekend and buzzing with activity, but at its core, it’s really about the people and relationships within the overlanding community. From brand new exhibitors to those who have never missed an event, and from the curious first-time day pass attendee to the dedicated camper who traveled thousands of miles to be a part of the event, the quality conversations and friendships found at Overland Expo are innumerable. While there’s no way to truly capture this in a short post, some of our friends offered their point of view on what makes Overland Expo special.

Overland Expo PNW 2025

“It was awesome! I loved the instruction, and the course was set up beautifully. There was enough challenge, but it wasn’t too daunting for a newby like me. The instructors were great; super positive, really supportive, and where you struggled or had questions, they were right there.”
– Mack, San Francisco (Friday Trail Course Experience Attendee)

“We’ve had a really great time at Overland Expo PNW! We’ve been really impressed by the traffic and the number of people who come by. People are definitely showing up to buy and we’ve moved through a ton of product which has been great. We love being a part of the overlanding community! We believe that we have the right tool for outdoor adventures.”
– Kendra Tobler, Director of Marketing at Benchmade

If you’re feeling the FOMO, don’t worry. We still have two events left this year! Join us in Loveland CO, on August 22-24, and Arrington, VA, on October 3-5. We’ll see you down the road!

The Mueller Family: Overland Expo PNW Instructor Spotlight https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/mueller-pnw25-instructor-spotlight/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50807 Overland Expo PNW

Freshly returned from the Pan American Highway, Overland Expo can’t wait to hear Gordon and Megan Mueller’s stories. But mostly, we can’t wait to hang out with their six-year-old Goldendoodle, Gus, while they’re busy presenting “My Dog’s Been to More Countries Than Your Dog: Traveling the Pan Am with Gus” at 3pm on Friday in the Overland Essentials Area Sponsored by Midland Radio Corp. In 2023, the Muellers put all their belongings in storage, quit their jobs, and headed south for a grand adventure. After making it to the tip of Argentina with Gus in tow, they returned home in April, 2025, and are thrilled to share anything they’ve learned along the way in hopes of helping to encourage other travelers get out there. According to the Muellers: “The world is too big and interesting to not explore beyond your own borders.” We have to agree! To learn more about the Muellers, keep reading.

Tell us about your rig(s):

2019 Dodge Promaster self converted (thanks Youtube) camper van we call Falkor after the friendly luck dragon in Neverending Story.

All-time favorite campsite?

Always a tough question but one pops up first. It was in Guatemala called Finca la Escondida. One of those campsites you plan for one night and we stayed for four. No wifi, no one around, lots of hikes nearby, and at 9 p.m. the volcano Fuego would erupt and we could see it glow from our van. And fireflies danced in the night skies. It was magical, peaceful and sticks in your heart.

What’s your go-to overlanding meal?

Puttanesca — it’s easy to have a jar of olives, capers (the star of our trip), an onion, some tomatoes, and if we’re lucky some form of parmesan cheese on top of any shape of pasta. Add in wine if you’re feeling sophisticated.

The Mueller family

Best silver-lining story?

We quickly learned what the rainy season means in Panama as we pulled into our campground spot and promptly SANK. Oh that dreaded feeling! We broke out the sandboards for their inaugural use, forward, backward, reposition, try again…. and got ourselves covered in mud. Finally after about an hour of trying, we broke down and asked our neighbors with a Unimog if they could help. The guy said to us, “Yeah I saw you stuck, but thought I’d let you struggle a bit first, I’ll get you out of there right quick.”  Sure enough we were out in a jiffy, and later brought them a bottle of wine as a thank you. We shared it together and formed a friendship that lasted seven more countries, and we saved them a few times too from other potential disasters. Lessons learned, always have beer or wine on hand for a thank you, and in the rainy season park next to a Unimog!

What is an area of overland travel that you think you have nailed?

Our dog Gus is a 75-pound Goldendoodle who would literally stop traffic and have people asking “¿Que raza es?’ What breed is he?” They had never seen anything that looked like him, so gigante.  When they asked his name we would say Gustavo and it would garner so many laughs, and “Nooo, really that’s not his name! My cousin/father/son is named Gustavo!”

It took us about four months to realize why his name got such a reaction – in Latin America you don’t name your dog human names, they are like Negra, Blanco, Canela, Brownie, so Gustavo was a star! He made us so many friends, so I think we mastered in Spanish all the questions we’d ever get about him and the small talk of meeting new people and learning about their dogs. It was such a pleasurable way to connect with others. Dogs are the best!

An area we can use improvement in is continuing to grow in going with the flow and not over-planning! Also, staying longer in places, we always got excited for what was next, it would be good to slow down even more.

What does your “division of labor” look like while traveling?

We quickly learned that even though we had a blog, we didn’t want to spend any more time on the computer than we had to — and that our trip was for us, not for other people.  We kept up on the blog for six months and just decided that we really didn’t want to do it, so stopped.  And being freed from the shoulds of life feels, well, freeing.

Gordon was in charge of the mechanics of the van, filling the water, and most importantly mapping and getting us to the places we wanted to go.  He did all the tricky driving in big cities or crazy ass roads.  And we learned not to trust google so his instincts on direction were invaluable.

Megan was in charge of communications with others in English and Spanish, finding us places (campsites or AirBnBs), loading up good podcasts or books, and meal planning.

We both shared the grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning as it’s more fun to share!

A Newcomer’s Guide to Overland Expo – PNW Edition 2025 https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/newcomers-guide-overland-expo-pnw25/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50704

Since its inception in 2009, Overland Expo has grown exponentially, expanded to five events across the United States, each featuring hundreds of vendors, over 100 presenters, trainers, and VIPs, and more than 500 session hours of education. With so much to choose from, this can be both exhilarating and a bit overwhelming for the first-time attendee to an Overland Expo.

Once you have the app, be sure to select “Overland Expo PNW 2025” as the event and let it download the event-specific data.

Once you arrive, the overland world is your oyster. Here are the highlights to get you on your way:

Educational Opportunities

A huge part of our event revolves around education. Classes are open to everyone* and run all day long in our education pavilion, and the DIY area.

For people newer to the overlanding world or people looking to refresh their skills, be sure to check out the classes in the Overland Essentials Area Sponsored by Midland Radio. There you can get a thorough education on foundational skills like trip planning, map reading and navigation, communications, and what to do if something goes wrong, among many other topics. Highlights include Graham Jackson’s How to Plan Your Overland Trip, a perennial favorite, Lori Perfect’s Baja Mexico: Gulf to Pacific in a Day, and a host of other great classes from new and returning instructors.

For those looking to deepen their backcountry skills or up their camp cooking game, there will be classes just for you all weekend long at the Backcountry & Culinary Pavilion sponsored by Boss Lighting. Among a laundry list of great classes offered, check out “Ceviche in the Wild” with Top Chef Alum Chad White.

Looking to expand your technical skills up close and personal? Come by the Hands-on Pavilion sponsored by Quad Lock. We have great classes and demonstrations throughout the event. Here you’ll find classes on trail tire repair, the Overland Radio Hands-On Lab taught by Scott Jensen, several first aid classes by Overland Expo alum Zach Elsman as well as some great map and compass classes, and that’s just the start of what you can find there all weekend long.

Come to the Women Who Wander Pavilion where a wide variety of women-oriented classes, roundtables, and get togethers will offered throughout the event. Classes range from tips on offroad driving to mastering your offroad vehicle components, to safety and security as a solo female adventurer. If you are looking for some fun tales from the trails, check out Avis Cook and Cara McClellan’s Rally Stories from the Dirt Q&A on Saturday afternoon.

The Learning Lab will make its debut at Overland Expo PNW this year.

While the Thursday Overland Expo Training Experience sponsored by COMEUP Winch USA is sold out, those attendees looking to get behind their own wheel to test their off-road skills are able to purchase add-on tickets for Friday on the Trail Course Experience. You can read more here, but don’t delay! Trail Course Experience time slots will sell out any day now.

Check out the Overland Expo app for a full schedule of classes.

Vendors

No doubt, the vendor area is one of the most popular parts of Overland Expo. This year, our PNW event has over 300 vendors, and the number is increasing every day.

Gain Offroad Driving Confidence at Overland Expo PNW https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/offroad-driving-overland-expo-pnw25/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50671

One of the founding tenets of Overland Expo is education, and every one of our events offers hundreds of hours of classes and sessions designed to give you the knowledge to adventure safely and confidently. When it’s possible, we love to get attendees behind the wheel, and in just a few short weeks, you could be piloting your overland rig through a custom-built off-road course at Overland Expo PNW.

At Overland Expo PNW, the Trail Course Experience sponsored by ComeUp Winch USA is designed to help you gain the confidence to tackle tough challenges on the trail. While any behind-the-wheel training is great, using your own rig takes your experience a step further. Overland Expo’s expert instructors will help you learn how your vehicle reacts to different types of obstacles so that you’ll know the best course of action the next time you find yourself in a similar situation out on the trail.

The Trail Course Experience sponsored by ComeUp Winch USA will also help participants learn how to best use the features of their particular vehicle. Different makes and models include modes, buttons, and options that can greatly affect how the vehicle performs on the trail. The instructors at the driving course will walk you through how to best use those functions when the going gets tough. No matter if you drive a 4×4 or an all-wheel drive, or if you’re traveling in a van or a lifted truck, this experience will be a huge boost to your off-road skills and confidence.

Speaking of tough trails, when you’re dropping over a ledge or squeezing through a tight spot, a good spotter can be the difference between body damage and continuing on worry-free. That’s why spotting and signals are a big component of the Trail Course Experience sponsored by ComeUp Winch USA. Learning how to effectively communicate with your spotter will definitely come in handy on future adventures.

Last but certainly not least, the Trail Course Experience instructors will cover Tread Lightly principles and ethics with each participant. It’s important that we all know, understand, and implement these principles so that we can protect the areas we explore and do the best we can to ensure they’re available to the next generation of adventurers.

Learn New Skills at Overland Expo PNW https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/learn-new-skills-pnw25/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 21:59:39 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50663

We’ve revamped our education and training programming at PNW — come check it out!

So, what’s new?

Back in the fall, we sent out one of the largest surveys Overland Expo has ever shared, looking for information and guidance from you, our attendees, about what you’re looking for when it comes to off-road vehicle training. It was looking for a lot of information, and so many of you filled it out to give us helpful insight into what you love most about our events an what makes us stand out

We asked. You answered. We listened.

Off-road driving training has long been a highlight of the attendee experience at Overland Expo. As with all elements of our events, we work to keep this component fresh and value-driven and our survey highlighted the importance of this aspect of our events and how beneficial our training programming in general is for our attendees. As a result, we completely revamped our Training program sponsored by ComeUp Winch USA at our Pacific Northwest event to offer three different experiences to meet the goals that survey respondents expressed when it comes to getting trained at Overland Expo:

Overland Expo Training on Thursday only: Many people expressed a desire not to miss out on the main part of the event during the weekend, so we added a Thursday day-long training program. Attendees of this program receive a full day of training in both hands-on, static and on course / in vehicle settings. They also get to arrive early, camp for an additional day and enjoy a VIP luncheon experience. (Tickets for this training are sold out, but at the time of publishing this post, attendees can still purchase the other two options.)

Trail Course Experience: We’re excited to bring the core principles of Overland Expo’s premium training program at a lower price to a wider attendee audience with the Trail Course Driving Experience sponsored by ComeUp Winch USA. This option is available to any pass holder on Friday while tickets are available. (More information and tickets HERE.)

Private Training: For attendees looking to really hone their off-road overlanding and recovery skills, our Overland Expo Trainers will conduct an extremely limited number of private training sessions on Saturday. Participants will get to choose exactly what they want to focus on for a completely custom training experience. (More information and tickets HERE.)

The Learning Lab

We strive to ensure that there is something for EVERY attendee at Overland Expo, whether you’re new to overlanding or if you’ve already taken a few laps around the globe. The Learning Lab is filled with more niche subject matter that may not be of interest to every attendee, but we know it will be of interest to a few, and we’re all about quality over quantity when it comes to engaging educational opportunities. You’ll find classes here like Washing and Caring for Down (Adrian Roadman); DIY Tips, Tricks and Hacks (Bevan Walsh); Best Route for Overlanding Across Europe (Dan Lin) and much more!

Back from Travels Around the World with Tales to Tell:

Meet our youngest instructors, Cedar and Sage Bishop, and their parents Diana and Jeremy during a presentation about their recent Pan American Highway journey, Overlanding Unfiltered: From Canada to Patagonia with 1 Family, 1 Van, and a 1000 Surprises, at 1pm in the Storytelling Pavilion. Click here to learn more about the Bishop family.

Megan and Gordon Mueller — and their furry co-presenter, Gus — will share essential information for anyone looking to travel the Pan American with their pup during their Friday 3pm session in the Overland Essentials Area sponsored by Midland Radio titled, My Dog’s Been to More Countries Than Your Dog: Traveling the Pan Am with Gus.

Our UK contingent, Lisa Morris and Jason Spafford will infotain attendees during their Four Wheeled Nomad: 11 Years on the Road, 7 Continents, One Epic Ride by Moto & 4×4! presentation at 4pm on Friday in the Storytelling Pavilion.

Photo by the Mali Mish Family

Join The Lin Family on Saturday at 10am in the Storytelling Pavilion for their session, 17 Years Overlanding As a Family Across 49 States, 53 Countries, 5 Continents

Later that day, catch round-the-world travelers from ‘Down Under’, Ken and Tony Butler, for their session titled: I.N.D.I.A.: I’ll Never Do It Again! at 2pm in the Storytelling Pavilion.

For the first time at Overland Expo PNW, we’re featuring the Hands-on Pavilion sponsored by Quad Lock for in-depth intensives on everything from traditional To Hi-Lift or Not (Todd Rodgers) to Splint Happens: Improvised First Aid for Overland Travel (Zach Elseman). This area will also host traditional navigation and knot tying classes.

But Don’t Worry – We’re Keeping Your Favorite Parts of Our Programming:

The Overland Essentials Area Sponsored by Midland Radio Corp. will have a full roster of classes and seminars designed for those who are just beginning to get into overlanding. Graham Jackson will teach his quintessential Pre-Drive Checks class on Friday and Sunday; Scott Jensen will teach Radio 101 and 201 level class throughout the weekend, and Connie Rodman will provide invaluable insights into day-to-day living on the road and how to do it better (and more happily).

Local PNW Top Chef Alum, Chef Chad White, will be demonstrating “Ceviche in the Wild” in the Backcountry & Culinary Pavilion sponsored by Boss Lighting throughout the weekend. Matt McClellan of Ozark Overland Adventures will give us a Gaia GPS Layers Deep Dive on Saturday at 2pm and Ching Fu will give advice about finding legitimate campsites on Friday and Sunday.

PNW Instructor Spotlight: the Bishop Family https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/pnw-instructor-spotlight-bishop-family/ Mon, 09 Jun 2025 16:24:29 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50651

Overland Expo can’t wait to welcome the Bishop family: Diana Kinyua, Jeremy Bishop, and their twins Cedar and Sage to Overland Expo Pacific Northwest later this month in Redmond, Oregon! They are a family of adventurers who swapped the comforts of home for a life on the road. Diana is a storyteller and a dentist who likes to trade her drill for a life on the road every so often. Born and raised in Kenya and having lived in Canada and the U.S., she has a deep fascination with different cultures and the connections formed through travel. Jeremy is an adventurer at heart. Born and raised in Minnesota, he set out to explore the world at a young age through guiding. From leading bear-viewing and heli-hiking tours in Alaska to kayaking in the fjords of Norway and multi-day canoe trips in Florida, Jeremy has built a life around adventure, teaching, and the great outdoors. Along the way, he developed a passion for capturing the beauty of the world through his award-winning photography.

Together, they share their love for exploration with their young children — turning every road, river, forest and mountain pass into a hands-on classroom for them. Cedar and Sage were just four years old when their Pan-American journey began. Along the way, they adopted a Mexican street dog Palapa who now joins them on their grand adventures. From spotting flamingos on frozen Bolivian lakes to snacking on street food in Colombia, they’ve embraced a life rich in play, curiosity, and constant change. Through slow travel, they seek not just to see the world, but to live in it deeply, fully, and with open eyes and hope to inspire others to reimagine what life on the road can look like with kids, courage, and a sense of adventure.

The Bishop family will be presenting “Overlanding Unfiltered: From Canada to Patagonia with 1 Family, 1 Van, and a 1000 Surprises” in the Storytelling Pavilion at 1pm on Friday afternoon. In the meantime, to learn more about the Diana, Jeremy, Cedar and Sage, you can check out their travels on Instagram  @dkinyua and @jeremy_bishop

Tell us about your rig(s):

We traveled in a 2016 Ram Promaster that we self-converted, twice. The first time was in 2017, before we had kids, when we built it out for road trips across Canada. When we found out we were expecting twins, we completely tore out the original interior and redesigned it with our growing family in mind.

Our pre-kids build included a charming wood-burning stove that kept the van cozy during Canadian winters. Sadly, it became an obvious safety hazard with toddlers, so we had to remove it. The redesigned layout prioritized space and movement. We built a full-length walkway so the kids and our dog could move freely from front to back, instead of having a static bed.

Our setup includes many home comforts: a small fridge, composting toilet (Nature’s Head), an induction cooktop, a propane burner and a grill. Diana insisted on a large sink, originally intended for kid baths, but they outgrew it quicker than expected! For sleeping, our daughter used a mattress over the swivel front seats, our son slept on the bench seat, and Jeremy and Diana slept on a Murphy bed at the back, which folds away to open up the living space.

Jeremy built the interior using aluminum extrusion and wood, while I (Diana) handled our electrical system after spending six months studying at the school of  YouTube. We installed 360W of solar panels and a 200Ah lithium-ion battery system. It was a very simple system but it worked the entire time.

One of the best things about our van was how inconspicuous it looked throughout Latin America. it blended in so well that people often mistook it for public transport. We even gave a few locals rides in remote areas. Its size also meant we could fit it into a shipping container, making it ideal for crossing the Darien Gap and later shipping it back from Uruguay to North America.

All-time favorite campsite?

It’s hard to pick just one, so many stunning places come to mind. Overlanding feels like spending the time hopping from one incredible campsite to the next, and we found so many of them. The one thing they have in common though is that they tended to be in remote and grand landscapes.

One favorite was camping at the base of Popocatépetl in Mexico, near the town of Cholula. We spent a few days parked in a field full of wildflowers watching the volcano smoke throughout the day.

In the Bolivian altiplano, we stayed beside Laguna Colorada at over 4,000m altitude. The nights were cold and very windy. The lake froze overnight, and in the morning, we watched flamingos stuck with their legs frozen into the ice. As the sun slowly warmed the lake and the ice started to melt, the flamingoes began to free themselves. We sat there watching them and listening to the tapping sounds their feet made on the brittle ice.

The next night, we camped at Sol de Mañana, a geothermal field at 4,900m. This area is incredible with fumaroles, geysers and bubbling mud pools. During the night, we could feel the ground vibrating and hear the geysers erupting. It was quite an intense and surreal experience to be around such a force of nature.

In Argentina, near the remote village of Antofalla, we camped by Laguna Verde, a salt flat filled with pools in shades of turquoise, green, and red due to cyanobacteria. The kids loved catching tiny fish in this seemingly inhospitable place.

Lastly, one of our most scenic campsites was beside the Río Serrano in Chile, just outside Torres del Paine. From our spot on the riverbank, we had a postcard view of the Los Cuernos peaks.

I could go on and on about the incredible places we camped, but these were very special.

What’s your go-to overlanding meal?

With our kitchen set up, we were able to make any meals in the van just like we would at home.  We loved food shopping in Latin America. Being able to go to a butcher only for meat and then the verduleria/ fruteria (vegetable and fruit) market was an experience we absolutely miss. We also made sure we immersed ourselves in the culture to where we would eat the foods like they do, for example, in Mexico, we would buy tortillas from the tortilleria and use that to make tacos. In Argentina, we indulged in the beef and grilled meat for a lot of our meals, buying from the butchers also allowed us to learn about the different cuts of meat and the best way to prepare them. In Chile, we enjoyed the grilling lamb meat and one of our highlights was making ceviche in Peru. Visiting the pescaderia (fish markets) and finding out from the  local vendors what the best fish for ceviche was and then learning how to make it was a fun adventure.

Best silver-lining story?

Early in our trip, just outside Pinal de Amoles in Mexico’s Querétaro state, we experienced our first major breakdown. While heading to the Mirador Cuatro Palos, a loud thump from under the van forced us to stop. Our passenger-side CV joint had completely failed.

We reversed down the gravel road to the main highway, unsure what to do. Locals soon gathered around to help. A kind couple, Felix and Teresa, who lived nearby, offered us a place to park in their compound.

It took three weeks to get the replacement part shipped from the U.S., but in that time, they treated us like family. The kids helped harvest apples from their trees, and we pitched in however we could—cooking, running errands, and helping with housework. Their generosity was humbling and we formed a lifelong bond and still keep in touch.

What is an area of overland travel that you think you’ve nailed?

Through our travels, Jeremy and I became incredibly efficient in how we communicate and make decisions — especially in challenging situations. We faced several major breakdowns, some in extremely remote areas, like the southern edge of the Cordillera Blanca in Peru at 5,000 meters, where a transmission bolt sheared off, or in the Argentine Puna, again above 5,000 meters, where we lost all our transmission fluid and couldn’t drive the van. Over time, we learned how to stay calm and focused on how to get out of the predicaments and we saw the same resilience in our kids. They seemed to sense the seriousness of the moments and would quietly keep themselves busy while we figured things out. Through it all, we developed a deep trust in each other. On the road, with everything constantly changing, we were each other’s anchor. That unwavering trust in one another’s abilities was essential to the success of our journey.

What’s an area of overland travel where you could improve?

We’d love to get better at budgeting. While we weren’t big spenders and generally avoided tourist traps or souvenirs, the cost of unplanned breakdowns stretched our finances thin. Major repairs—like a transmission rebuild in Peru and a full engine swap in Bolivia—quickly ate into our funds.

Next time, we’d set up a dedicated emergency fund separate from our daily travel budget.

What does your division of labor look like while traveling?

Jeremy did most of the driving, while I handled route planning and navigation. As a result, I have a mental map of Latin America, while Jeremy sometimes can’t quite remember where we’ve been!

Jeremy typically handled the groceries and most of the cooking. I managed van tidiness and did the dishes. Parenting was shared equally — though the kids made most of the mess, they also helped clean it up.

I ran the website and shared family-focused updates on Instagram. Jeremy, a professional photographer, captured the stunning landscapes and shared those on his own account.

We have so many stories to tell and we also want to inspire others especially with children to go out and travel like we did. We have a book sharing our incredible journey, called Between the Extremes, coming out this fall. We are incredibly proud of sharing our stories as well as Jeremy’s incredible photography through the book.

Among the brands listed here, you’ll notice plenty of familiar faces and some new names bringing innovative products to the overlanding world. You can find the full list of currently confirmed exhibitors below.

Title Sponsors

We’re excited to work with some of the best in the business as our Title Sponsors for Overland Expo Mountain West 2025. Supporting Sponsors

Our Supporting Sponsors include some of the biggest names in the overlanding space as well. They make the vehicles and gear we need to explore the world around us.

Be sure to keep an eye on the schedule and the Overland Expo mobile app to stay up-to-date on the special events, demos, and everything else that will be happening over the weekend. The app will be live two weeks before the event.

Special Area & Event Sponsors

Throughout the weekend, you can come by the Oasis Bar and Food Court where you can find a great selection of food and drinks, a great location to enjoy a meal, and in the evenings happy hours each night followed by special event programming including the famous Moto Party sponsored by Rider Justice and Overland Expo Foundation Raffle.

When you need a break during the day, you can relax in one of our three bivvys featuring comfortable camp chairs and a place to recharge your electronics. In particular, come visit the bivvy sponsored by Hankook Tire to get some R&R before getting back to the hustle and bustle of the event.

Education and Inspiration

As always, there will be a wide array of education and training opportunities throughout the event. Check out the app for a full list of classes available.

For people newer to the overlanding world or people looking to refresh their skills, be sure to check out the classes in the Overland Essentials Area, where you can get a thorough education on foundational skills like trip planning, map reading and navigation, communications, and what to do if something goes wrong, among many other topics.

For those looking to deepen their backcountry skills or up their camp cooking game, there will be classes just for you all weekend long at the Backcountry & Culinary Pavilion.

Looking to expand your technical skills up close and personal? Come by the Hands-on Pavilion. We have great classes and demonstrations throughout the event.

For those seeking adventure inspiration, the Storytelling Pavilion will be the hub of great adventure storytelling all weekend. We have a stunning lineup of people who have traveled the globe and will be sharing the inside stories behind their travels, including the good, the bad, and the ugly of extended travel.

The Women Who Wander programming has been an increasingly popular part of Overland Expo since its start just a few years ago. Come to the Women Who Wander Pavilion where a wide variety of women-oriented classes, roundtables, and get togethers will offered throughout the event.

The Learning Lab will make its debut at Overland Expo MW this year. The educational space is intended to provide more intensive education for those looking to do a deeper or more advanced dive into a given topic or area. The instructor / attendee ratio is smaller in this teaching area, allowing for open dialogue and complex learning.

Join our panels of subject experts at the Roundtable Pavilion for a deep dive into a vast breadth of overlanding topics and get your questions answered.
