Namely, some updates and new versions of some of our favorite gear have hit the market, and we’re excited to check them out in person at Overland Expo Mountain West.

If you walk through the Overland Expo campground, you’ll notice a trend amongst ground tents. A high percentage of them are of a particular hue of orange or green, and that’s because the Gazelle T4 tent series is incredibly popular at our events and out on the trail. Now, Gazelle has updated the T4 with a new edition geared towards cold temps and inclement weather. Dubbed the T4 Overland EXP, this model features the same easy setup and take down that Gazelle tents are known for, but with updates that will help campers stay comfortable in colder temps. Up top the mesh panels can be closed with zipper panels. It also features closable vents for use with diesel heaters or portable air conditioning units, so you can stay comfortable even in extreme temperatures at both ends of the spectrum. And thanks to a new pole design, the T4 EXP packs down to 9.5″ x 9.5″ x 57″ so it fits in tighter spaces than previous models for easy transport.

There’s hardly a product more ubiquitous with overlanding than Maxtrax, and now these tried and trusted traction platforms are no longer limited to those adventuring on four wheels. The new Maxtrax Moto Boards are more than just a smaller version of the OG boards. The tread pattern is specifically engineered to work with ADV moto tires. There’s also an integrated 2-liter water reservoir and concealed linkage straps. Even when you aren’t stuck, the Moto Boards can be used as kickstand stabilizers.

Most of our readers are deep into the dog days of summer, so any way we can beat the heat and humidity is a welcome relief, and if you’re headed outdoors, a good pair of shades is a summer staple. The innovators at Ombraz sunglasses just released a new model that’s great for lounging, hitting the trails, or even the water. The Refugio, Italian for “shelter,” shares the same armless design as the rest of the Ombraz lineup and offers a full shield design and Zeiss optics that protect 100% of UVA and UVB. The integrated nose pads offer a subtle lift away from the brow for increased ventilation and reduced fogging even in the hottest conditions. You can tighten down the abrasion-resistant cord and hit the rivers without fear of losing your sunglasses if you dive in, no matter if it’s planned or not.

onX Offroad Adds First-of-its-Kind Motorized Dispersed Camping Layer to App https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/onx-offroad-adds-first-of-its-kind-motorized-dispersed-camping-layer-to-app/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 15:02:35 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51404 new onX Offroad dispersed camping layer helps overlanders find uncontested places to hang their hats and pitch their tents.

onX recently announced the addition of a new layer to its suite of onX Offroad products: onX Dispersed Camping. The layer pinpoints close to 140,000 miles of roads and trails in the US National Forest System where dispersed camping is legal. For those not familiar with the term, dispersed camping, also known as free camping, refers to camping outside of designated campgrounds on public lands. It’s typically off-grid, meaning there are no facilities; these campsite require campers and overlanders to be self-sufficient, and follow the Leave No Trace guidelines.

The Dispersed Camping Layer from onX is the first of its kind, and its creators hope that it will reduce “congestion and collective impact on public lands” by allowing campers to easily identify and locate vehicle-accessible locations that they can legally camp at. “By highlighting all the legal camping corridors, instead of pinpointing a limited number of marked sites, the layer helps users spread out, which helps disperse the environmental impact seen on popular sites pinned in other products,” said onX Offroad Content Manager Chris Cordes.

READ MORE: You Can Now Use onX Offroad in Your Dashboard with Apple CarPlay

Similar to overlanding, dispersed camping has grown in popularity over the last five years, with more campers than ever exploring far beyond the typical campsite. When onX’s motorized Dispersed Camping Layer is toggled on, the layer highlights the road and trail segments that house dispersed camping areas in yellow, users can click on the road or trail for each area’s unique regulations.

onX can work offline with downloaded maps, allowing overlanders to explore farther. photo by onX

onX says that before this layer, there were two options available to campers seeking dispersed campsites: they could consult Forest Service PDFs, which are clunky and non-interactive, or they could rely on user-generated apps that varied in their accuracy. With the app’s new layer, overlanders and campers can view camping information in the context of their route in real time.

As of this summer’s launch, the Dispersed Camping Layer is available for 11 states, including vehicle-accessible corridors in US Forest Service lands in Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. onX says it plans to expand the coverage nationwide later this summer, and include dispersed camping on other federal lands in the future. The layer is currently available to onX Offroad Premium and Elite users. At the time of this writing, a Premium yearly membership costs $34.99, while the Elite version comes in at $99.99, billed annually.

You can find out more about the new layer here.

10 Pieces of Survival Gear to Keep You Prepared for the Unthinkable https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/survival-gear-available-mtn-west-25/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51330 Thinking about the worst case scenario isn’t something most of us like spending our free time engaging in, but there is some benefit to thinking through the worst that can happen — and packing gear in your rig to help mitigate the negative effects of emergencies. Disaster can strike at any time, especially while overlanding off-grid, so maintaining a realistic level of preparedness can go a long way. Here are 10 pieces of overlanding survival gear our editors keep in their rigs at all times — so when things go sideways, you can keep your head on straight.

Editor’s Note: Please keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive, and what supplies you bring with you is determined by where you are going, how long you will be out, and how many people are traveling with you. Consult this list, and do your research before heading out into the backcountry.

First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit should contain survival gear to get you out of a medical emergency or other precarious safety situation.

There are few items more indispensable in an emergency situation than the first aid kit. We like Uncharted Supply Co.’s new Basecamp – 30L thanks to its rugged design and its ability to provide care for a family of four without taking up a ton of room. At almost $800 it’s pricey, but we’d pay this much for peace of mind. If the Basecamp isn’t your bag, Uncharted has a ton of excellent first aid options.

GPS

Yes you have your cellphone’s maps, but in remote areas where cell signal is spotty at best, you’re going to need a Global Positioning System (GPS). Download maps, access reliable navigation and mark specific points of interest (like campsites) that you’ll want to find your way back to later. If you’re going to invest in a GPS (which we really recommend) our editors swear by Garmin: it’s one of the most trusted names in the space, and has built its reputation on being reliable and trustworthy, two attributes highly valued when purchasing a GPS. The Garmin Tread 2 is a solid choice and has recently been updated to better suit the needs of overlanders.

Emergency Comms

One of the most critical tools in your survival kit is undoubtedly some sort of emergency communication device. When cell service is unavailable, satellite communication devices, radios, or other means of communicating that don’t rely on cell service are crucial for communicating with the outside world, whether that’s to request medical aid, coordinate during incidents and just increase overall safety. Our editors like SPOT, which specializes in satellite communication devices that allow users to track assets, send and receive messages, send GPS position and status, mark waypoints, track their progress on SPOT Mapping and notify search and rescue officials in the event of an emergency.

Water and Food Storage

A good rule of thumb when it comes to overlanding is to bring at least 1-2 gallons of water per person, per day. In an emergency, food and water storage should be able to hold three days’ worth of provisions and hydration for each member of your crew. Hydrapak makes portable, lightweight water storage options that can be stored in your rig for emergencies, brought out for day hikes and explorations, or emptied and stored without taking up too much storage space. The brand’s Car Camp Bundle includes a 10-liter water reservoir, a 2-liter lightweight water reservoir that can be frozen in a pinch, plus a water bottle and splash guard.

Spare Fuel Can

One of the most important aspects of safely exploring the backcountry is having enough spare fuel to get you back to civilization in case of emergency. Fuel should be stored in cans specifically made for the purpose. We like Rotopax for its size range, easy mounting design and durabilty. If you’re interested in other brands, check out our guide to the best fuel cans for overlanding.

Sharp Knife

The use cases for a sharp knife are pretty much endless, but we like having an option like a Benchmade Bugout in our glove compartment for situations like: shelter building; preparing fire supplies; food prep; making prepares; preparing wound care supplies; self defense.

Basic Mechanic Tools

If something happens to your rig and you don’t have the basic tools on board to fix it or mend it temporarily — or don’t have a better-prepared friend traveling with you — you are officially SOL, and you’d better hope you packed those emergency comms and food and water storage. For basic tools, we like the ShopRoll from Adventure Tool Company: it keeps everything contained and organized, has what you need for basic repairs and won’t break the bank.

Headlamp

Bringing a headlamp into the backcountry may seem fairly obvious, but in our experience, this is one piece of gear that is easily forgotten, and makes an outsized impact on how your trip goes. Headlamps can be used for navigating unfamiliar terrain, making your way around camp safely, and for nighttime repairs. They’re worth their weight in gold. We like the Biolite Dash 325 thanks to its simple design, long-lasting battery life and ultra-lightweight feel.

Fire Starting Supplies

One of the benefits of overlanding is the ample storage space most rigs have, unlike backpacking or even traditional camping. Thanks to that extra storage space, you can afford to bring multiple types of fire starters — all with a specific purpose. For nightly campfires, you can opt for something a little bulkier like a literal torch — our top picks are the Bernzomatic Trigger Start Torch and the Snow Peak Folding Torch. For emergencies, we’d recommend keeping something small and storable like the Wolf and Grizzly Fire Starter Set on hand — it won’t take up much room, but it could literally be a lifesaver depending on the conditions you find yourself in.

Winch

A winch won’t just save your ass if you get stuck — it will also help others out, as well. If you’ve come up on someone that’s gotten themselves stuck and didn’t have a winch, you know exactly what we’re talking about. We like Warn for their premium quality and excellent customer service.

Editors’ Choice: Overlanding Camp Kitchen Accessories https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/best-overlanding-camp-kitchen-accessories/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/2020/04/24/2020-4-24-best-overlanding-camp-kitchen-accessories/ It’s no mystery that a meal cooked at camp tastes better, but it’s ever so easy to slip into packing chaos when it comes to camp kitchen gear. We’ve been trying to dial in the optimal camp kitchen kit for years, balancing the need for delicious and varied meals in the backcountry with not packing the proverbial kitchen sink. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite camp kitchen accessories for our overlanding trips that keep hunger at bay no matter where we roam.

VSSL – Java G45 Coffee Grinder

If you live by the adage, “But first, coffee,” the G45 Coffee Grinder from VSSL should be on your radar. With 50 grind settings and an efficient grinder, you’d think that would be enough, but the VSSL team designed this piece of kit to go above and beyond. The handle transforms into a locking carabiner, so it’s easy to attach to your pack or cook kit. The magnetic knob provides ample purchase stashes in the lower section, and the whole thing fits perfectly into an Aero Press, making for a compact brewing kit that fits anywhere. The overall build quality inspires confidence, and any coffee lover can be sure that they’ll be using the G45 both at home and on the trail for years to come.

Snow Peak IGT Starter Set

Snow Peak is legendary for the design and durability of their gear. With their roots in titanium wares, the product line now includes tents, apparel, and everything you can imagine you’d need to cook in camp, ranging from ultra-minimalist backpacking to giant car camping kitchens that can feed a large group. While we keep plenty of Snow Peak items in our rotation, the Chopping Board Set goes on every single trip. It provides a sharp knife and sturdy cutting board, no matter if we’re preparing a feast or chopping up some meat and veg for some hasty kabobs over the campfire. The board folds in half to serve as a case for the knife that’s magnetically secured to keep everything safe and secure. The board also fits into the IGT System to serve as a prep surface.

The Detour series from Sea to Summit includes kitchen items that strike a great balance between packability and usability. Stainless steel construction is durable and easy to clean, while the collapsible silicone components provide excellent space savings. If you’re looking for a compact cook kit that will last for years with proper care, this is a great choice that travels really well.

The Detour series is BPA-free and features stainless construction. The utensils include texture on the handles for grip. Polished sections are easy to clean up, and the triple-ply bottom of the cooking pot provides even heat distribution. Silicone sections allow for collapsing construction while remaining sturdy when deployed. Plus, everything packs down for easy transport, especially for motorcycle explorers. Check out our review.

Ignik – Firecan Elite Fire Pit

Ignik FireCan

When time and conditions allow, we love to have a campfire at every opportunity, but prep, weather, and other factors mean that’s not always a possibility. However, the Firecan Elite Fire Pit from Ignik has made it easier than ever to still enjoy a fire when we don’t have time to gather firewood or under certain burn ban restrictions. The quick-connect hose and easy ignition mean that we can have a fire within minutes of parking the rig. The flame is fully adjustable to dial in the heat, and when you’re done, the whole thing packs up into a convenient package. We’ve paired it with the 20LB Tank Case Seat so that we can set the Firecan up anywhere around camp, and it’s an extra seat if guests stop by to enjoy the fire.

MSRP: $300

Jetboil – Genesis Base Camp 2 Burner

Cooking up some bacon wrapped dove on the Jetboil Flash on a Colorado overland trip

For decades, I used the same green two-burner stove for most of my overland cooking needs. It didn’t simmer great, and it was a pain to light on occasion, but it had mostly worked for countless trips. Then I on a trip last fall I got a chance to use the Genesis Base Camp system from Jetboil, and I quickly realized why I had been seeing more and more of these amongst friends and around the Overland Expo camping areas. For starters, the pot, skillet, and burners all pack up into a surprisingly small carry case. The burners provide every level of heat you could need to cook up a great backcountry dinner that rivals anything you might make at home. If you need more culinary tools, your Jetboil backpacking stove can be attached to the Jetlink system.

MSRP: $450

Geyser – Portable Camping Shower System

We’ve been big fans of the Geyser Shower System for years, and not just for our personal hygiene purposes. It’s a great way to get dish duty taken care of while using a shockingly small amount of water. The sponge system makes it easy to scrub stubborn messes, and the Geyser System provides hot water to break up baked-on food quickly. When it’s post-dinner shower time, you can swap out the sponge in seconds. The Geyser is a great option if you’re traveling with minimal dishes and don’t want to deplete your water supply in the pursuit of keeping them clean.

The camp kitchen category is easy to get disorganized, so we always prioritize a good storage system to wrangle the chaos. The latest iteration of our camp kitchen all packs into a Zarges K470 Aluminum Storage Case. It’s a heirloom piece of kit that works for a wide range of gear storage solutions. Plus, you can further organize it with a number of products from Zarges. I appreciate that Zarges has committed to building a number of case sizes for years and this allows you adopt a stacking system without fear of it being discontinued. This box rides atop another Zarge case that holds essentials in my truck 24/7 and with the addition of one strap the whole thing remains sturdy and secure across any terrain.

MSRP: $461

Dometic – GO Hydration Water Faucet

Water is one of the most important supplies on any trip, but wrangling large plastic containers and jugs gets old fast. Add a touch of civility to your camp kit with the Dometic GO Hydration Water. It remains one of the most useful and innovative campsite gadgets we’ve come across.

The faucet is a self-contained water pump with a hose that is long enough to be used with almost any water container. The rechargeable battery and mini pump are self-contained in the faucet itself, and it can dispense a liter per minute or about 150 liters per charge. A magnetic base keeps it in place on ferrous surfaces, and a simple finger tap on the touch-sensitive top turns it on and off. There’s even a small LED light built in, so you don’t have to power up lights at night for that quick drink. If you don’t have a gravity-fed water system (or even if you do), the Dometic GO is a great way to dispense water. It’s also a great addition to any campervan setup.

The Advanced Storage & Camping System for Toyota 4Runner by WHEELSFEELS turns a capable SUV into a complete adventure setup. Designed for 4th and 5th Generation models, it fits every major configuration, whether the vehicle has 2 or 3 rows of seats, whether the seats are kept or removed, with or without the OEM cargo tray. No guesswork, no drilling, each version bolts directly into factory mounting points for a secure fit.

What makes this system stand out is how intelligently it uses every inch. Whether the goal is sleeping inside the vehicle, hauling serious gear, or both, every element is designed to support real overland travel. Owners can choose to keep their seats, fold them down, or remove them. The right support structure and platform will always be there to match. The system adapts as needs change, from daily driver to full-blown road trip basecamp.

Drawers can be configured as a single full-width unit, a balanced 50/50 split, or a 60/40 layout for solo travelers. Heights range from 5.7 to 10.6 inches, depending on how much storage or sleeping space is needed. Each drawer reaches 33 inches deep, riding on heavy-duty slides rated for up to 250 pounds. The drawer tops are even stronger, supporting up to 400 pounds, ideal for mounting a fridge, loading gear, or prepping a quick camp meal. The tops can slide out for easy access or lock into place when stability is key.

With the optional sleeping platforms, the 4Runner becomes a mobile bedroom. With seats folded, the system provides a flat, stable surface up to 70 inches long. Remove the seat cushions and add extensions, and that expands to 83 inches, almost a queen-size bed, ready in minutes.

Even the corners of the trunk are put to use, with hinged side compartments that keep essentials close and the setup looking clean and integrated. Customers can choose between a sleek varnish or soft black carpeting for a quieter, warmer interior. Add-ons like dividers, a table set, a folding sink, a faucet, a fridge mount, a USB light, and a lock kit let every traveler build exactly what they need.

Crafted in the USA using premium plywood and CNC-cut for a perfect fit, the system is lightweight, quiet, and built to last. It ships partially assembled for protection, with final setup taking just 15 to 30 minutes. Designed hand-in-hand with the 4Runner community, it’s a trusted upgrade that turns space into freedom.

MSRP: $990

Rig Ready Systems – Jackout Emergency Kit

The Rig Ready Systems JackOut is a top-of-the-line, all-inclusive emergency kit built to tackle a wide range of critical situations. Housed in a rugged Nanuk Hard Case that’s IP67 waterproof-rated, it’s as tough as the terrain you’ll face. At the heart of the kit is a 1.5-ton off-road jack complete with a skid plate (but no tires—because you’re not getting stuck). Unlike traditional off-road jacks, this one can slide effortlessly over rough surfaces, providing maximum stability and a superior contact area with the ground. The AGM Jack Rod, rated for 2 tons, braces the jack with extra support while under load, giving you peace of mind while you’re cranking things up.

Getting those stubborn lugs off is a breeze with the Ridgid Impact Wrench, packing an impressive 500 ft-lbs. of breakaway power. The 2025 Toyota Trailhunter Grade, Explained https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/2025-toyota-trailhunter-grade/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 23:36:31 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51248 It’s no secret that the Toyota 4Runner and Tacoma are two of the most popular models in overlanding — and driving at large. Toyota recently introduced a new frontier for its two icons, focused specifically on overlanding; the new 2025 Trailhunter grade, designed to bring overlanding innovation and upgrades to the forefront. Here’s a full breakdown of Trailhunter, from new technologies and upgrades to increased value for the customer. Buckle up.

What makes the 2025 Trailhunter grade different?

The Trailhunter grade was first introduced on the all-new 2024 Tacoma and has been expanded to the all-new 2025 4Runner. Toyota’s Trailhunter grade was designed specifically with overlanding in mind, and features key innovations and technology to help make the experience more seamless than ever before. The Trailhunter grade’s key features include its suspension enhancement and off-road accessories; in short, it’s got all the bells and whistles to make adventuring more fun than ever.

The Trailhunter grade was desgined in collaboration with ARB®, Old Man Emu® and RIGID Industries®, and includes durable components and integrated off-road equipment that have been mainstays in the overlanding community for years. According to Toyota, “Both the Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner Trailhunter grades include a 2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain delivering 323 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.” Additional standard features on both models include Old Man Emu® suspension, rugged steel skid plates, a high-mount air intake, and onboard air compressor.

Building on the inaugural 2024 Trailhunter, the 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter comes stock with an ARB steel rear bumper and ARB Sport bar, while the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter upgrades include an ARB® roof rack. Both 2025 Trailhunter grades come equipped with 33-inch rugged-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch bronze-finished wheels.

What accessories can customers expect on the 2025 Trailhunter grade?

It’s pretty much assumed that everyone who loves overlanding loves overlanding accessories, and Toyota took that into account when developing the 2025 Trailhunter grade. Thanks to the company’s colllaboration with well-known names in the overlanding community, consideration was given to protection and recovery (the Tacoma rear bumper), mounting platforms for accessories (the bed rack, roof rack and sport bar) and a suspension tuned for the demands of overlanding.

The Trailhunter grade comes standard with integrated overlanding equipment that customers will need to get out to the furthest reaches of the backcountry. Take the suspension upgrades that come stock on the Trailhunter: the Old Man Emu® suspension, with 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks and external remote reservoirs, prioritizes the ruggedness, capability and stability that overlanders rely on traveling the toughest routes.

Unless you’re deeply experienced wrenching on your rig, modifying your vehicle’s suspension and other foundational basics can be overwhelming — and when it comes to safety, getting things right is key. That’s why, rather than throwing a fancy rooftop tent on the 2025 Trailhunter as an upgrade and calling it a day, Toyota innovated its overlanding-specific grade from the bottom up, ensuring foundational suspension, lift and protection were all dialed. Not only do these included upgrades give peace of mind on the trail — they also keep the vehicle’s warranty intact, another bonus for customers.

Both the 4Runner and Tacoma Trailhunter grades come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which is the company’s suite of advanced driver-assist features designed for use on and off the road. Additionally, off-road nav tools and Multi-Terrain Monitors help drivers navigate tough conditions, with front, side or rear views being selectable on the go.

Visibility is another key component to overlanding safely, and Toyota beefed up the lighting system on the 2025 Trailhunter grade: both models feature RIGID Industries® white-and-amber color-switching LED fog lights, and an integrated LED light bar on the bronze grille.

Is the 2025 Trailhunter grade is available now?

The short answer? Yes. If you’re intrigued by the innovative 2025 Trailhunter grade, both grades are available now. The 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter starts at $31,590, while the 2025 4Runner Trailhunter starts at $41,270.

Dometic Launches Recon Series, A New Modular Line of Coolers and Accessories https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/dometic-recon-modular-coolers/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 15:22:22 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50786 The Venn diagram of those who liked Tetris growing up and overlanding as adults finally has some clarify of that middle cross-over space, thanks to Dometic’s latest launch: a new line of stackable, modular coolers and accessories designed specifically for car camping and overlanding. Lovers of organization and overlanding, this launch is specifically for you. Read on to learn more about the Dometic Recon Series.

The Recon Series was developed as a whole new ecosystem, one designed to squeeze as much usable space from SUVs and overlanding rigs as possible. The individual hard-sided coolers are built to stack on top of one another, using non-stick feet and corresponding depressions in the lids to nest securely on top of each other. The folding handles on the side of each cooler tuck away discreetly into recesses in the sides of each cooler, enhancing side-by-side packing.

Dometic acquired overlanding brand Front Runner in 2021, and it seems to have taken a few cues from the overlanding experts on the FR team. The Recon Series takes design cues from the popular Wolf Pack Pro boxes, which are also engineered to stack and nest with one another. The Recon Series builds upon this by adding the cooler element to the stackable design ethos.

Not satisfied with reviving the concept of stacking hard sided coolers (Coleman had Party Stackers a decade ago, but discontinued them), Dometic has included soft-sided accessories and options into the Recon ecosystem as well. The new line includes three hard-sided, injection molded coolers — which range between 16 and 69 liters (18 and 100 cans without ice) — and three soft-sided coolers, as well. These are available in 12, 17 and 21-liter sizes. Dometic also launched a Recon Tote along with its hard and soft coolers.

READ MORE: 10 Things You Can’t Miss at Overland Expo PNW

There are more functional features we’d be remiss not to mention: On the hard-sided coolers, the lids can open in multiple directions, in case you’re trying to grab a beverage from an awkward angle. The latches also function as bottle openers. Further down the line, Dometic says it plan to offer a spigot that swaps in for the drain plug, transforming the cooler into a portable water jug full of icy cold delight.

The soft coolers are designed to squeeze into tight spaces, and use zipper-free lids with dual-hinge latches for more convenient opening options. The reinforced base and abrasion-resistant 840D nylon TPU-coated outer shell ensure these rugged coolers will last for years to come.

The Recon line is available now, with all coolers retailing between US$225 and $425.

Four Wheel Campers Debuts the New Hawk+ Flatbed Camper https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/four-wheel-campers-new-hawk-plus/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50664 Earlier this month, Four Wheel Campers debuted its most advanced flatbed camper yet: the Hawk+. So, what sets this model apart from other Four Wheel Camper offerings? Read on to find out.

The new Hawk+ slide-in camper by Four Wheel Campers offers a completely off-grid experience for extended overlanding excursions

The brand-new Hawk+ promises more features and functionality for longer, more off-grid overlanding and roadtripping adventures, and delivers on these promise by upgrading the brand’s classic Hawk camper with extended-travel capabilities, full self-containment and more. For those familiar with the 50-year-old brand’s flatbed design, the Hawk+ builds upon that design, and is Four Wheel Campers’ first-ever fully self-contained camper.

The Hawk+ is designed for extended travel on-grid or off, and includes an expanded power capacity, increased fresh water storage, an integrated grey water system and smart interior layout to make full self-containment a reality. The Hawk+ is specifically designed for heavy-duty trucks with a 7-foot flatbed tray, and is designed to maximize every inch of available space. In a nutshell, the Four Wheel Campers Hawk+ includes more power, more resources and more space.

Power Up

You want power? You’ll get power with the Four Wheel Campers Hawk+. The newest design from the legacy brand includes external 12V/120V ports with USB & USB-C for external charging, a dedicated exterior DC port for Starlink Mini, so that you can stay connected anywhere, and a suite of optional upgrades. These include:

 • Up to 810Ah lithium battery capacity (optional) – Massive energy storage for extended off-grid adventures
 • Up to 500W of roof-mounted solar panels (optional) – Harness the sun to stay powered anywhere
 • RedArc Manager Alpha 75 (optional) – Advanced power management for monitoring and charging

Increased Resources

The Hawk+ is designed for extended stays, whether that’s in the backcountry or at your favorite local campsite. Upgrades to the new design include:

 • 40-gallon fresh water tank – Twice the capacity of standard FWC slide-ins and flatbeds
 • Built-in 5-gallon gray water tank – A brand-new feature for Four Wheel Campers, designed for added convenience and compliance

The Hawk+ also includes an optional cooking upgrade in the form of a inset portable 2-burner induction stove, which can be use indoors or outside to increase cooking flexibilty.

Stretch Out, Get Comfy

One of the drawbacks of staying in campers while overlanding is the lack of usable space — but the Hawk+ has been engineered to solve for tight quarters. The redesigned interior includes the following upgrades:

 • +6″ of floor, counter, and cabinet space – Expanded interior footprint compared to the original Hawk Flatbed
 • +6″ of dinette space (compared to original Hawk Flatbed) – Seats up to four, ideal for meals or working on the go
 • Pass-through external storage – Includes a convenient flip-down table for outdoor use
 • New front countertop – Features integrated pantry storage for organization

Additionally, customers can add on a rear MOLLE rack for mounting gear and accessories, should things become crowded inside.

Starting at starting at $43,995, the Hawk+ is available to order through all Four Wheel Campers dealers. If you’d like to build your own Hawk+, you can visit the Four Wheel Campers model page.

Solo Stove Debuts New Multifunctional Cooler, the Windchill 47 https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/solo-stove-debuts-windchill-47/ Wed, 28 May 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50381 Solo Stove's upcoming Windchill 47 is a cooler fridge, portable A/C, and mister all in one

You know Solo Stove for its simple and smokeless fire pits, but did you know the brand recently released a multifunctional cooler, built for the outdoors? Say hello to the Windchill 47 — and read on to learn more about what makes this new release so special.

Solo Stove’s roots are in backpacking and camping — although the brand’s most famous product is its line of smokeless fire pits, Solo Stove got started with backpacking and camping stoves built for the outdoors. After acquiring a suite of companies with fire pit-adjacent offerings, Solo Stove has come out with its own multifunctional cooler, the Windchill 47, which offers the ultimate trifecta of summertime chill vibes: food and beverage cooling, personal A/C, and misting. The Windchill is modeled after the Icybreeze cooler, which was developed by one of the brands Solo Stove recently purchased.

So, what sets the Windchill 47 apart from other coolers? That would be its multi-functional design, which allows typical use like keeping food and drink cold, but also builds in more perks, including personal air conditioning and misting. The design is streamlined from earlier versions, with electrical components more contained and the battery being integrated into a lid compartment rather than floating on top of the lid itself.

Besides more integrated construction, the Windchill 47 can hold up to 65 cans (without ice) of whatever beverage suits your fancy. The air conditioning functions by using a heat exchange system, one that pulls outside air in, cools it via the ice-filled main compartment, and pushes it back out as dry, cold air. Users can use the included vent hose, which stores in the underside of the lid, to direct air where desired. The Windchill 47 also features a misting system, which uses melted ice water to offer dewy relief from the heat.

If you’d like to save battery life, you can use the three-speed fan alone without air conditioning or mist, cutting down on power usage.

Additional features include: a built-in bottle opener, USB device charging, all-terrain wheels and a telescoping handle for easy transport, and an accessories attachment system to add a drink holder or even a side table. The removable 10-Ah battery provides at least three hours of air conditioning, dependent on your environment. Customers can also purchase additional 10- or 17-Ah battery packs for swapping.

All of this technology doesn’t come cheap, but compared to other electric cooler that don’t mist you, the price doesn’t make us freeze in our tracks: the Windchill 47 went up for preorder this month at a retail price of $650. Solo plans to begin deliveries in early June, just in time for things to really heat up — or with the Windchill, cool down.

Happier Camper Debuts Traveler Summit, Which Blends Retro Vibes With Modern Amenities https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/happier-camper-debuts-traveler-summit/ Thu, 15 May 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=50000 Happier Camper is known for its playful, retro-inspired campers, and has been developing modular, nostalgia-fueled floor plans since its 2015 launch. Although the company made its mark by producing flexible and adjustable living spaces paired with a healthy dose of vintage colorways and quirkiness, it hasn’t offered much in the way of permanent layouts — until now.

The company recently released the brand-new Traveler Summit, which is designed with a mix of convenient modularity alongside a fixed kitchenette and bathroom, bridging the gap between those who crave permanence with those who like to mix things up.

Like its other models, the Traveler Summit can be re-arranged via Happier Camper’s Adaptive Components — but it builds upon the Traveler that launched in 2020, which integrated a few crucial permanent components in the design.

The Traveler Summit’s is just 17 feet long and weighs less than 3,000 pounds, but it still includes enough space to fit 3-5 campers comfortably. The interior features two fixed elements: the kitchenette and the bathroom. While neither areas can be mistaken for luxury, they’re comfortable enough: the kitchenette includes a built-in stove, stainless steel sink, and a floor-to-ceiling console that holds a full-size fridge and microwave, while the fixed bathroom includes a shower, sink, dry-flush toilet, and storage.

The Traveler Summit also includes a full-sized bed and an entertainment area that can be converted into an additional sleeping zone, should the need arise. Like its earlier models, everything in the Traveler Summit — besides the kitchenette and bathroom — is modular, and can be re-arranged based on your personal preferences. Additional perks include a heater, AC options, solar panel options, built-in closet space and a wireless phone charger.

If you’re interested in an affordable, adorable, adjustable camper that blends old-school charm with new-school adaptability, the Happier Camper Traveler Summit is available for pre-order now through the company’s website, with the goal of shipping units in late 2025. The Traveler Summit starts at $69,950 and is the pinnacle of the Traveler Series; if you’re interested in something more accessible, the Traveler Essentials starts at $39,950 and the Traveler Adventure costs $54,950. Each model comes with a built-in kitchenette.

Just In Time For Summer, EcoFlow Launches New Air Conditioner https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/ecoflow-new-wave3-ac/ Fri, 02 May 2025 21:41:13 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=49800 In an effort to bring even more of the comforts of home into the wild, EcoFlow has released the Wave 3, a portable air conditioner and heater that features smart controls, useful upgrades and seamless functionality.

EcoFlow's new Wave 3 portable air conditioner can cool (or heat!) small spaces in a flash

The EcoFlow Wave 3 is an update to an existing model, and brings meaningful upgrades including portability, longer-lasting batteries and smart controls to enhance the user experience.

The Wave 3 sees improvements in heating and cooling capacity, smart controls, efficiency and water drainage. EcoFlow incorporated two years of customer feedback into the Wave 3, and it shows: the unit relies on improved R290 refrigerant (versus traditional R32), which improves its efficiency. The portable air conditioner and heater can heat or cool spaces ranging from 118 to 183 square feet, and can lower the temperature by up to 15 degrees Fahrenheit in 15 minutes, thanks to its 1800W of cooling power, and its 2000W of heating power can raise the temperature by 17 degrees Fahrenheit.

The unit requires no installation, and the built-in 1024Wh LFP battery can provide up to eight hours of cooling in Eco Mode. The Wave 3 has a lifespan of 4,000 cycles, and will cool your truck, van or whatever rig you choose to roam in. The Wave 3 features an Automatic Mode, which switches between heating and cooling depending on the ambient temperature. Anyone who has spent time in an enclosed rig knows humidity can be an issue, but the Dehumidification Mode keeps your space dry, and minimizes potential damage or mold from moisture.

One of the coolest (pun intended) features on the EcoFlow Wave 3 is Pet Care Mode, which automatically activates cooling if the interior temperature of your vehicle goes above 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and sends an alert to your connected device.

The Wave 3 can be cahrged fully in just 75 minutes, adding to its usefulness, and can be charged via multiple sources, including AC power, solar, car charging and using with the EcoFlow Alternator Charger.

Review: Zarges Cases https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/review-aluminum-zarges-storage-cases/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=49320 For me, camping has always been a family event, and I hope to pass that tradition on to my son. While plenty of gear gets upgraded or wears out with expected use, when possible I try to outfit us with equipment that will last for years, if not decades. One piece of our kit that I consider truly a heirloom is our Zarges storage cases. The design is timeless; they’re built to take all kinds of abuse, and they just get better with age. The word patina gets thrown around a lot, but in the case of Zarges cases, they truly look better with age and use. Each scratch and ding tells a story about a past trip, but it doesn’t hamper their performance at all.

They also capture the balancing point between form and function. They look cool, no matter if they’re serving as an impromptu coffee table in the garage or if they’re stacked up in camp. Well beyond looks, they’re also tough. They take the abuse, and they’re MIL-STD-810 tested, water- and dustproof, and Grizzly Bear Certified. With that kind of guarantee, I fully expect to pass these Zarges cases down to my son when he’s heading out on his own adventures. Beyond the years of future use, the aluminum construction will be 100% recyclable should it ever truly fail. I also appreciate that they aren’t susceptible to issues with low temperatures like plastic cases are, and I don’t have to worry about broken latches or cracked lids on winter trips. On average, they’re also lighter than plastic cases in similar sizes.

Unbelievable Durability

Zarges case review

While I put my cases through plenty, it’s really nothing more than the use I expect from all of my gear. I don’t abuse them, but I don’t want to baby them by any means. My K470-40568 lives in my truck full time and carries my air compressor, jumper cables, tire repair kit, and a few other miscellaneous items. Day in and day out, it rides around strapped down to my Bedslide with whatever else I’m hauling. Outside of some superficial scratches, this case doesn’t look any different than the day I loaded it up for the first time, years ago, and tossed it into the truck. I also have two K470-40678s. One just carries miscellaneous gear, and the other is my dedicated camp kitchen box. All three stack together if needed, and it’s great to have spots for the gear I take on every trip, plus the things that change depending on the destination or activity.

Zarges case review

I don’t think I’ve ever really tested the mettle of these aluminum cases, but a good friend has the best testimonial for what you can expect a Zarges box to stand up to that I can imagine. Last year, he was making his way back from a trip out West and, on his very last night, stopped in at a HipCamp in North Carolina. He specifically asked the host about leaving stuff out of his truck overnight, and he responded, “It will be fine; nothing should bother anything.” Well, as it turns out, a black bear decided to bother some things, specifically a Zarges case that my friend uses as a step to get into the back of his Canopy Camper. The bear not only took the case from his camp, but it also spent the next five hours trying to break into the case in the gulley next to his camp. Once the sun came up, my friend retrieved his case. The locked latch had been pulled off, and the case came away with plenty of claw marks, but a five-hour tussle with a bear is pretty impressive. Plus, Zarges offered to replace the case, but he chose to repair the latch with a couple of rivets. Now that’s some gear with a story.

A Case for Every Use Case

When it comes to gear storage at home or on the trail, I really appreciate a system that not only stores my gear but also works well together. Crates or cases that securely stack provide peace of mind when you’re jostling down the trail and optimizing storage space in the garage. Zarges offers several sizes to fit the customer’s needs within their heavy and medium-duty cases, but within those series, you’ll find several common footprints. For example, the 40810, 40568, 40678, and 40564 models are all K470 cases and share a width and depth of 21.65×13.78 inches with varying heights. If those cases don’t work for your use case, you can move up to the group that’s 21.65×21.65 inches. And, of course, there are smaller options as well. Regardless of your rig or what you’re carrying, you can dial in a Zarge case or two to fit your needs.

Customize Your Zarges Case

A sturdy case you can hand down for decades is only the basis for a good gear storage system. Zarges case protects your gear, but their line of accessories keeps it organized and optimized. The K470 that I use for my kitchen kit also features Zarges’ Foam Liner kit. This keeps rattling down with camp dishes and other metal items, plus it helps my DIY dividers to stay in place. I want to add one of the MOLLE Lid Panel to my other case to keep some small items easily accessible. Circling back to the accessories and the ability to stack the cases is the reason I always pack the Bamboo Travel Top along. When I stack two K470s together, the Travel Top makes a great prep surface while seated, and with all three stacked, it’s a great standing height. When it isn’t in use, it folds in half and fits into my camp kitchen box.

A testament to the quality of the Zarges cases is also evident in how other trusted brands in the overland space utilize them and produce accessories for them. My smaller case is outfitted with a Goose Gear top plate so that it can be used as a step or seat without fear of buckling the lid. I’ll most likely add these to my larger cases as well.

Final Thoughts

Without a doubt, Zarges aluminum cases aren’t cheap, but with a quality construction that will stand up to decades of use, a robust line of accessories, and a warranty that even covers bear damage, I firmly place them in the buy-once cry-once category. If they’re ever damaged beyond use or warranty, they’re recyclable. However, I highly doubt that will ever be the case, and instead, I expect my son to head off on his first solo overland trip with a well-worn Zarges case protecting his essential gear and with plenty of fond memories connected to the scratches and dents from trips with dear old Dad.

Goose Gear Debuts Incredible UltraLite Storage Solutions https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/goose-gear-ultralite-debut/ Fri, 04 Apr 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=48985 If you’ve attended an Overland Expo, there’s a good chance you’ve seen the Goose Gear booth, or at the very least, their innovative products in a wide range of overland vehicle builds. Goose Gear is family-owned and operated, and while they’ve called California home for the last three generations, they recently moved their operations to Grand Junction, Colorado. One of the first products to debut out of their new facility is the UltraLite Series of interior products for some of the most popular campers on the market.

The UltraLite interior is designed to offer the durability, organization, and convenience you’d expect from Goose Gear in the lightest package possible. “Our goal was to create a system that gives our customers all the benefits of Goose Gear’s premium storage solutions while significantly cutting weight,” said Brian Fulton, CEO at Goose Gear. “With UltraLite, adventurers can enjoy a highly configurable setup that won’t slow them down.”

We always encourage overlanders and other off-road enthusiasts to be mindful of Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings, but we totally understand that it’s easy to neglect that number when you’re outfitting your rig for comfort and preparedness. However, Goose Gear has made it easy to save an incredible amount of weight with the UltraLite Bed Cargo Module, weighing 42 pounds, the 5-foot Rear Utility Storage Bench is only 15.5 pounds, the 6-foot Storage Bench Extension only adds on 8 pounds and somehow the entire Sleep Deck is a scant 6 pounds. By our math, that means you could outfit a 5-foot-long truck bed with the Cargo Module and two Utility Storage Benches and only eat into 73 pounds of your capacity. Plus, when you outfit your truck with Goose Gear products, you know you’re getting great customer support from craftsmen who are also active in the community.

Currently, the Goose Gear UltraLite products are available for 2005-2023 Tacomas with both 5- and 6-foot beds that are equipped with Go Fast Campers. GFC Rivian R1Ts are also covered. Third Gen Tacoma owners who opted for Super Pacific Campers can also take advantage of the UltraLite Series. We hope that Goose Gear continues to expand the truck and camper models that are compatible with this innovative product line. If your rig isn’t included, Goose Gear still makes a wide range of products, including seat deletes, their classic line of storage solutions, kitchen modules, and the Park Series of drawers and sleep platforms for a wide range of Subarus and Toyota RAV4s.

iKamper and Rivian have collaborated to release a Rivian-specific rooftop tent — one that can be mounted on either the R1T or the R1S.

The Rivian x iKamper Skycamp Mini Rooftop Tent — designed and sized specifically to fit a Rivian R1T or R1S and based off the SkyCamp 3.0 Mini platform — features PFAS-free construction and integrates Rivian’s eye catching aesthetic throughout the design, including exclusive color options including signature yellow accents, blacked-out hardware, and Rivian badges inside and outside the tent. The SkyCamp Mini Rooftop Tent’s EV-specific design feature comes in the form of a sleek, aerodynamic hardshell, designed to minimize drag and maximize range.

According to iKamper, all their tents, including this Rivian mashup, are compatible with a variety of vehicles. The mini tent works with almost every vehicle! The other tents, being larger and longer, will depend on the vehicle’s size. In order to assure your vehicle will be compatible, be sure to measure appropriately and ensure that your rooftop rack or crossbars can handle the weight of the tent you select. With this Rivian-specific model, we can be sure that this tent works wonderfully with the Rivian R1S and R1T.

The rooftop tent offers four-season protection from the elements, and will shield you from rain, wind and UV rays. The tent fabric is breathable, 300gsm poly-cotton blackout canvas, and the rainfly is waterproof polyester 75D ripstop, with an eco-friendly DWR coating. The entire tent weighs only 137 pounds, and can be set up in 60 seconds.

The Rivian x iKamper Skycamp Mini Rooftop Tent can be mounted on the rear or roof of the Rivian R1T, and the front or rear of the R1S. If you’re already a Rivian owner and are looking to get off-grid in your EV, the Skycamp Mini Rooftop Tent is a no-brainer, but it will cost you: the tent’s MSRP is just under five grand. The Best Gear We Saw At Overland Expo SoCal https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/best-gear-overland-expo-socal/ Thu, 27 Mar 2025 16:44:19 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=48804

Sure, it’s fun to geek out on all the epic rigs that roll up to Overland Expo events, but what about the rad gear that equips them? Lucky for you, our team walked the recent Overland Expo SoCal show and catalogued all the coolest and best gear that caught our eyes. If you’re getting ready to upgrade your ride and want the latest and greatest, read on to check out all the best gear displayed at this month’s show.

Rockjock 4×4 High Steering Knuckles

The recently-released RockJock High Steer Knuckles — for all JL Wrangler and JT Gladiator models — was showcased at Overland Expo SoCal. By installing these, you’ll raise your tie rod 2.75 inches and your drag link by 2.5 inches. The RockJock High Steering Knuckles can be used on factory axles, or axles that retain factory inner C-knuckles. Designed to be used with the brand’s other high-steering components, adding these will give you a complete package. These knuckles are manufactured to OEM standards and are designed with 65-45-12 ductile iron castings, gloss black finish, and precise machining.

Bilstein B8 TerraSport

Bilstein debuted its B8 TerraSport direct fit shocks, which are designed to increase ground clearance and improve offroad capability for crossover utility vehicles (CUVs). The B8 TerraSport will give users 1-2 inches of lift, depending on the application, enhancing their ability to navigate rough terrain, while also improving day-to-day rides.

Leitner Designs Platform Roof Racks

Designed to be as unobtrusive and low-profile as possible, what sets Leitner Designs’ platform roof racks apart from competitors is its ability to be installed without conflicting with air conditioning units, vent fans, sun roofs and other common impediments to roof rack systems. Designed with a load bar that is infinitely adjustable, users can slide rack bars out of the way.

Gozney Tread Pizza Oven

Gozney is known for its high-end pizza ovens, ranging in size from virtually immovable backyard fixtures like the Dome, to the brand’s newest launch: the Tread. Billed as the “world’s most portable pizza oven”, the propane-fueled Tread is capable of making 12-inch pizzas. The Tread heats up in just 15 minutes and cools down in 20, so you won’t be stuck waiting to be able to put your oven away after having a couple slices on the road.

Roambuilt Rear Door Storage

The Roambuilt Aluminum Storage Box is an exterior cabinet that can be mounted to the outside of your van or rig, allowing you to store dirty, smelly or just extra gear on your rig without it getting in the way. Each cabinet comes with the brand’s exterior mounting panels, friction hinges to hold your door open at any position, and an adjustable shelf. Built from lightweight yet strong .125″ aluminum, these USA-made storage cabinets are ideal for outdoor storage.

Rockworkx Tow Hitch Tool

this Rockworkx Tow Hitch tool was one of the best gear finds we saw at the show, because it is practically every tool we could think of, all in one nifty package. Plus, it's a stool!

Buying this Rockworkx hitch-mounted multi-tool means you’ll never be without a tool again — according to the brand’s website. According to us, this thing is just plain cool. This heavy-duty tool is built for overlanding, camping, and the outdoors, and includes the following tools: A hardened aluminum sand and snow shovel, full-size tow hitch step, hammer with peg/nail puller 12, Imperial & 13 Metric Wrench heads, pry bar with nail puller, adjustable hoe, trench digger Wood axe (with long and short handle), a three-part telescoping tube, and markings for a ruler. It even converts to a camp stool, if you can believe it.

Toyo Tires Open Country R/T Pro

Toyo Tires showed off its brand-new Open Country R/T Pro, which was developed after the brand split the R/T into two different categories: the R/T Trail and the R/T Pro. The R/T Pro is designed to be a hybrid M/T style, and will be quieter on streets and better in rain, snow and ice. Featuring professional-grade durability with a 3-ply sidewall and massive shoulder lugs, this tire is designed to offer protection against cuts, chips, and impacts.

The Open Country R/T Pro will be available in select sizes starting April 2025, and will come in fifty sizes and load combinations for 17- up to 24-inch wheel diameters, and up to 42-inch overall diameter.

Want to see these awesome products for yourself, and possibly test or buy them at a screaming deal? Review: Jase Medical Emergency Antibiotics Kit https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/review-jase-medical-emergency-antibiotics-kit/ Fri, 21 Mar 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=48727 No matter if you’re heading out for a weekend in the local National Forest or a months-long international journey, you should be prepared. You need adequate and appropriate emergency equipment, recovery gear, and a first aid kit to ensure you’re prepared for a wide range of scenarios. However, if you’re traveling far from civilization, a basic first aid kit might not meet your long-term medical needs. That’s where Jase Medical comes in. They provide customizable medical kits that include antibiotics and other medications that aren’t commonly found in off-the-shelf first aid kits.

Jase Medical Kit

Customizable Care from Jase Medical

Just like your recovery kit, your first aid should be customized to fit your needs and training. Jase Medical provides customers with the opportunity to order a basic kit that will meet a wide variety of medication needs and then build out the kit from there. The basic kit includes the following medications:

 • Amoxicillin-Clavulanate: This is a common antibiotic that can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments, including pneumonia, sinus infections, and dental infections.
 • Azithromycin (Z-Pak): The Z-Pak is often prescribed for strep throat, ear infections, and even Lyme Disease.
 • Ciprofloxacin: Also known as Cipro, this antibiotic is versatile and often prescribed for UTIs, bite wounds, and the ever-infamous traveler’s diarrhea.
 • Doxycycline: Doxycycline is versatile and can treat tetanus and ear infections; it’s been shown to treat MRSA.
 • Metronidazole: Also known as Flagyl, Metronidazole can treat Giardiasis, C. Diff, and Bacterial Vaginosis.

The kit also includes corresponding cards that let you know what each medication is a treatment for and the appropriate dosage/course. These make it easy to decide what medication corresponds to a condition and guide you on how to administer it.

While the basic kit can treat a wide variety of ailments that could be severe under the best circumstances, let alone when you’re miles from civilization without access to a doctor, Jase Medical also provides the option to add a wide variety of medications to your custom-built kit. These range from bulk counts of over-the-counter medication to more adventure-specific prescriptions. While not a comprehensive list of what Jase Medical offers, customers can select Acetazolamide for altitude sickness, anti-parasitical medications, antimalarials, antihistamines, epinephrine pens, anti-fungal, permethrin, and much more.

If these options are a bit too overwhelming, Jase Medical also offers a number of purpose-built kits beyond their basic kit and upgrades. These include med kits specifically designed for children, dental emergencies, travel, and more.

Easier than a trip to your local pharmacy

When I first discovered Jase Medical, I was intrigued by the concept but I expected that I’d need to go see my general practitioner, get a prescription, communicate that with Jase, and go from there. Not only was I wrong, but the entire process was quicker and easier than I could have ever expected. I simply logged onto the Jase Medical website, completed health-related forms that were evaluated by a board-certified physician, then the physician emailed me to confirm the purpose of the prescriptions. Once the prescriptions were placed with a pharmacy, they shipped them to my home. From start to finish, the whole process only took five days.

Jase Medical Kit

Personal thoughts

While I would be happy to have the Jase Medical kit on hand if I were on an extended trip, I see it as an extra layer of preparedness for plenty of other scenarios. Natural disasters ranging from hurricanes to blizzards can limit access to doctors. Being able to get ahead of an infection in these situations is a great plus. It’s also not out of the ordinary for access to medications to be delayed during such disasters if shipments can’t gain access to the area. For a very reasonable sum, Jase Medical gives you peace of mind at home and abroad.

Review: VSSL Nest Pour Over and G25 Coffee Grinder https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/review-vssl-nest-pour-over-coffee-grinder/ Tue, 18 Mar 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=48568

Quick Take: The VSSL Nest Pour Over is the size of a thermos, but holds everything you need to make a delicious cup of pour-over coffee except for some hot water and coffee. Add the Java G25 Coffee Grinder to the kit, and you officially have a camp coffee set up that would make a veteran barista proud. Just because this combo is compact and built for the outdoors doesn’t mean that you won’t want to use it at home.

“But first, coffee” is an adage that I live by every single day. At home, I use a variety of methods for my morning brew, but on the trail, I try to stick with the gear philosophy of minimalist but adequate, even when it comes to my caffeine fix. I’ve experimented with a variety of French presses, but none of those have really stuck, and I occasionally break out some instant coffee from various brands. Those get the caffeine in the blood system, but they never come close to providing a cup of coffee worth savoring.

VSSL Nest Pour Over Kit

When I got my hands on the VSSL Nest Pour Over Coffee Kit, I quickly realized it had earned a place in my camp kitchen box. It’s well designed, durable, packs into a super compact package, and it’s easy to clean. Essentially, it’s everything I’m looking for in my camping coffee gear. What I didn’t initially realize was how much I would use it at home and at the office because it just makes it so easy to have a great cup of coffee.

Everything you need. Nothing you don’t.

In a package that resembles a large thermos, VSSL managed to pack in two double-walled mugs, a pour-over dripper, a splashproof lid, a reusable steel mesh filter, and a storage section. All of the components easily thread together when the kit is packed away. At first, it seems like a bit of a brain teaser to reassemble everything in the proper order, but after brewing a couple of delicious cups of coffee, anyone can pack the kit away without a second thought.

VSSL Nest Pour Over Kit

VSSL Nest Pour Over Kit

The 10-ounce mugs are great for finishing before your coffee gets cold, and the pour-over nests, pun obviously intended, into the mugs securely, even on less-than-level surfaces. When it’s time to hit the trail, the travel lid is a great addition. However, the reusable filter is a real stand-out in the kit. I found it works best if you pre-wet before adding your grounds. When brewing coffee, it has great flow without allowing ground into your cup, and even though the stainless steel mesh is incredibly fine, the filter rinses out easily, so you’re ready to brew another cup of Joe.

All you really need for two delicious cups of coffee are the VSSL Nest Pour Over Coffee Kit, some hot water, and, of course, your choice of coffee beans.

Back to the grind

Of course, nearly every coffee drinker prefers fresh ground coffee. VSSL has you covered for grinding up your choice of beans with the Java G25 Coffee Grinder. This is the very definition of a great tool in a small package. The G25 fits into the storage compartment of the VSSL Nest Pour Over Kit and makes it simple to add fresh ground coffee to your morning camp routine. The G25 offers an incredible 50 grind settings so you can dial it in to fit your coffee preferences.

VSSL G25 Coffee Grinder

VSSL G25 Coffee Grinder

When stored, the G25’s handle folds over and screws into place so that it can also be used as a carabiner for attaching it to a bag if you aren’t packing it in the Nest Kit. The grinder knob threads into the catch when stored, and with a magnet, it attaches to the handle when in use. The bean hopper opens with a detent button that’s easy to operate. The 420 stainless steel conical burrs and dual bearings provide incredibly consistent grinds for any grinder, let alone one this small. In short, every aspect of this grinder is next level. Having this in your camp kit is a luxury, and even a serious coffee enthusiast will appreciate the quality and features of this compact powerhouse.

Rumpl Launches Overlanding Mat, Designed For Your Toughest Adventures https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/rumpl-overlanding-mat/ Thu, 13 Mar 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=48456 Overlanding can be pretty rough on gear: the dust, the dirt, the weather and the constant packing, unpacking and repacking can do a number on your favorite items. This is especially true for anything soft you’re bringing along — like blankets, jackets, hammocks and the like. If you’re sick of having to replace your camping blankets every few years due to holes, stains, singe marks and more, Rumpl just released a product that will solve all those problems: the Overlanding Mat.

Rumpl’s latest launch is built with the overlanding and camping market in mind, and although you may be thinking, “It’s just a mat — how complicated can it be?” — let me tell you, this baby has some very helpful and durable features built into its design. Read on to learn more.

So, what’s so special about the Rumpl Overlanding Mat?

The Rumpl Overlanding Mat was designed with tough environments in mind, and has the chops to handle whatever you throw at it with ease. (Besides something sharp — don’t throw anything sharp at your mat, please!) This premium mat features ample padding, so you can use it under a tent for a little extra cushion. It’s designed with a fully waterproof bottom shell that keeps any moisture from soaking through, and a PFAS-free durable water repellant finish on the top layer. Want to sit outside but it rained yesterday? No worries — the Mat will keep you dry and comfortable. The quilted top, constructed with durable 250D recycled nylon soft-touch twill, is soft enough to take a nap on, but will stand up to rocks, roots and other impediments found on the ground. The Overlanding Mat even comes with corner staking loops for extra utility.

READ MORE: 9 Reasons to Camp at Overland Expo West

This multi-purpose mat is designed for everything from bluebird days on the slopes to sandy, rocky beaches, and everywhere in-between, which I consider ideal for the varying terrain that comes with overlanding. If you never know where you’re headed next, it pays to invest in gear that will be prepared for any environment. When you’re not using your Overlanding Mat, you can easily stuff it into the included StuffleBag carrying case that comes with every blanket, so it’s not draped all over your backseat.

There’s one more bonus I forgot to mention — the Overlanding Mat comes with a 100 night exchange policy, which means you could use this baby for 90 nights, decide you don’t like it all that much, and return it. No muss, no fuss.

What’s not-so ideal about the Overlanding Mat?

There is one caveat to all this, and that’s the price. Although as overlanders, we’re used to shelling out the big bucks for the most rugged and capable gear, spending $130 bucks on a blanket does seem a tad steep. If you appreciate the engineering that went into this Rumpl blanket it makes more sense, but paying more than $100 for a mat may not appeal to some campers. If that’s you, here are a couple cheaper options that you may like. Just be warned: while they may come with a smaller price tag, these also don’t come with the Rumpl engineering and 100-night trial I’ve mentioned above, so you may end up spending more in the long run, anyway.

If you’re sick of using — and then throwing away — the classic green propane canisters that have been a staple at campsites and on overlanding trips for generations, Ignik is a great alternative for fans of reusable alternatives to everyday items. The Gas Growler 3.8 Naked is the brand’s latest launch, and holds about four times as much propane as those green, single-use bottles. So, what sets the Gas Growler 3.8 Naked apart?

READ MORE: Elevate Your Camp Kitchen with the Snow Peak IGT

The Gas Growler 3.8 Naked’s charm and appeal lies in its portability — and financial savings over time. The new, compact refillable tank is less than one hundred bucks, is more portable than traditional 20-pound refillable tanks, and cuts way down on campsite waste. According to Ignik, not counting the purchase of the refillable growler itself, each refill of the Gas Growler 3.8 provides 3.8 times the fuel of one single-use bottle, for about the same price.

Aside from its functionality, this new tank is efficient and safe, as well. The Gas Growler 3.8 Naked is DOT-approved, and includes a 12-year valve certification — so you can rest easy that you’re covered in case of any malfunction. Adding to the convenience factor, Ignik ships its tanks pre-purged and ready to be filled at any propane filling station. The Gas Growler 3.8 is eight pounds empty, and under a foot tall (exact dimensions are 8.3 x 8.3 x 10.2 inches) so it’s super easy to store when not in use.

If you’re looking for a more eco-friendly, cheaper alternative to the single-use propane canister, the new Gas Growler 3.8 Naked holds major appeal. And if you’re the type that likes accessories, you’re in luck: Ignik also sells cases for its refillable tanks, offering more protection from mishaps on the road. The cases fit the Ignik 3.8, 5 or 10-pound Gas Growlers, and include useful molle stitched webbing for attaching accessories or strapping down for transport. The cases are designed to fit into vehicles, offering on-demand propane access.

Editors’ Choice: Overland Recovery Gear and Accessories https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/best-overland-recovery-gear-devices/ Fri, 28 Feb 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/2021/01/08/2021-1-8-gear-collections-overland-recovery-gear-and-devices/ Recovery gear is one of those gear categories where you need to consider several factors before putting a kit together. For starters, consider your current training level and the training you’ll get in the near future. You can hurt yourself, or worse, and damage your vehicle with improper use of recovery equipment. Also, consider where and how you travel. Plenty of great adventures can be had along gravel forest roads and two-track, and if this is as far off the beaten path as you plan to go, your recovery gear can be limited to a shovel, some traction platforms, and a snatch strap. On the other hand, if you plan to hit more technical trails, or if you’re bad at turning around when the going gets tough, you’ll want more gear to make sure you can get yourself and others out of recovery situations. Suppose you’re traveling mostly solo versus with a group or travel partner in a second rig. In that case, you’ll need a comprehensive kit, plenty of gear to assist with self-recovery, and prioritize items that increase your mechanical advantage. Lastly, match your recovery gear to your vehicle. A full-sized truck with a loaded slide-in camper will require heavier-duty equipment than a lightweight overland build. All that being said, these items are some of our favorite pieces of recovery gear for our overland journeys. Use this list as a general guideline for what you should consider when selecting your overland recovery gear and accessories.

MSRP: $633

GlueTread — Full-Size Sidewall Repair Kit

A massive tire failure can be just as bad as getting stuck in the backcountry. Of course, a full-size spare is a huge help, but for an added level of preparedness, it’s well worth packing along a Sidewall Kit from GluTread. It’s a lot of peace of mind in a small package, and it comes from a team of experts who stand behind their product.

The patches in this kit are specifically designed for oversized tires and 4×4 use. The adhesive is specifically designed to dry quickly so you can get back on the trail in as little as 10 minutes. Each package includes four patches of varying sizes, four bottles of GlueTread’s specifically engineered adhesive, eight applicator tips, and ten pieces of sandpaper, so you’ll be covered for plenty of sidewall tears in the future. It all comes in a resealable bag for easy storage.

ARB — Recovery Gloves

During any vehicle recovery operation, it’s a good idea to have some gloves on to protect your hands from abrasion and increase grip since you’ll be working with ropes, harnesses, and even clearing dirt and rocks from wheels. This pair from ARB offers breathability and wear resistance in a quick-drying fabric. Keep a pair (or two or more) in your rig, and you and your crew will be ready for action. Hand injuries can quickly end your attempts to manipulate your recovery equipment – and keep you from working and playing. A tough pair of gloves protects your hands and also gives a bit of warmth in cold situations.

MSRP: $17.95

MaxTrax — MKII Traction Platforms

Orange traction platforms are rather ubiquitous in the world of overlanding. While there are some good options and plenty of copycats out there, you can’t deny that MaxTrax are pioneers in the market, and for good reason. A set of MaxTrax MKII traction platforms will get you out of the muck without pulling cable, and they can make sketchy spots on the trail feel much safer.

The fiber-reinforced nylon boards won’t break, crack, or stress whiten with use. They’re also UV stable and won’t fade if stored outdoors. Beyond added traction, they also work as shovels to clear snow, sand, and mud. MaxTrax traction platforms are backed by a lifetime warranty and are proudly made in Australia from Australian materials. Once you use a set, you’ll quickly see why they’re so popular.

MSRP: $259.99

Bubba Rope — 7/8″x30′ Rope

Bubby Ropes are legendary for providing quick and relatively easy ways to recover bogged vehicles. While safe operation and proper training are still a must, these are simple to use compared to other recovery methods, and they will recover vehicles in situations that will surprise you. This specific rope is a slightly smaller, and therefore easier to store, version of the classic Bubba Rope.

The Bubba Rope is made from high-quality nylon, and it can be used for both recovery and towing situations. These are water, UV, and abrasive resistant, so you can expect years of use before needing to replace this trust piece of recovery gear. It’s rated with a breaking strength of 28,600 pounds and includes a mesh storage bag.

MSRP: $83

ARB — Snatch Strap

What’s a “snatch strap?” Think of it as an industrial-strength rubber band built into a tow rope. When slowly pulling a vehicle out with a tow rope doesn’t work, sometimes giving the rescue vehicle a little “runway” to add momentum is enough to get the stuck rig moving enough to get the extraction process underway. The problem is that a hard pull with a tow rope can damage vehicles, snap off parts – sending them flying at high speed, which can cause injury – or snap the tow rope.

That’s where the shock-absorbing feature of a snatch strap comes into play. The stretching ability of the strap allows for the harder “pull” force required for the recovery but also ramps the “pull” force while easing the stress on both vehicles. But again, Proper use of a snatch strap requires instruction to prevent injury and vehicle damage.

ARB has been making snatch straps for years, and we rank a snatch strap right up there with traction boards in terms of effectiveness. With a 20% kinetic stretch rating and a minimum breaking strength of 24,000 lbs, you can be sure that these straps can stand up to the stress of snatch strap recoveries. Don’t be tempted to use a regular tow strap for a difficult recovery. This option from ARB will allow you to safely extract one vehicle from sticky situations with nothing but another vehicle and some know-how.

MSRP: $129.95

ARB — Tree Trunk Protector Straps

We’re big supporters of Leave No Trace overlanding, but sometimes you have to call on Mother Nature to lend a hand (or a tree trunk) so you can winch your way out of trouble. ARB’s Tree Trunk Protector straps are designed to be a non-stretching anchor point for your winch so that you can safely self-rescue without damaging the tree. The three-inch width helps spread out the load to prevent damage to the tree. Nature thanks you for your consideration – and so does the next person who needs that tree to get out of a tight spot.

MSRP: $59.95

Warn — Spydura Synthetic Winch Extension Rope

Of course, you have enough winch line on that spool – until you don’t. Just to be sure, we suggest a winch extension rope like this 50-foot-long option from Warn. It’s highly abrasion-resistant and offers 10,000 lb. breaking strength. Looped ends with fabric covers won’t damage painted surfaces. Maybe get two?

MSRP: $215.59

ComeUp — DV-18 12V 18,000-Pound Winch

ComeUp DV-18 12V Winch, winch, recovery winch, overlanding winch, truck winch,

There’s no denying a winch, and some key accessories can get your rig out of a lot of sketchy situations. And while there are some big names in the winch market, we like how ComeUp has added some innovative features to the DV-18 bumper-mounted winch, such as a rotatable clutch assembly and line release that can make it easier to haul out a vehicle even if it’s a bit off-angle, and an overheat indicator on the remote control for safe operation. The 7-horsepower motor working through a 315:1 reduction gearing has the power to get even a stubbornly stuck vehicle moving toward safety. An 82-foot run of 1/2-inch rope is included, as is a 17-foot tether for the remote. Just to reiterate, recovery equipment, especially winches, require training for safe operation, but once you’re trained, you’ll be amazed at what a winch can conquer.

How Much Water Do You Need for Overlanding? https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/how-much-water-do-you-need-for-overlanding/ Wed, 26 Feb 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/2020/10/09/2020-10-9-how-much-water-do-you-need-for-overlanding/ The single most important thing you need to consider on an overland trip is water. But knowing exactly how much water to bring on an overland journey isn’t always easy — especially if you’re new to overlanding. In this article, we examine exactly how much water to bring for overland journeys as well as tools to make toting large quantities of water on the trail easier.

]]>
If someone were to ask you, “What is the single most important thing to take with you on an overland trip?” What would you say? Some might say GPS or navigation app, some might argue that a well-stocked first-aid kit is paramount, while others may assert that a recovery kit and tire kit is the most important…and they’re not wrong. But I’ll tell you that the most critical thing to bring with you isn’t a mobile device or a shiny gadget to bolt to your rig. It’s water.

Knowing how much water to bring on a trip isn’t always easy — especially if you’re new to the world of overlanding. I’ve been exploring the backcountry by vehicle for more than two decades, and in that time, I’ve adopted a pretty good system for exactly how much water to bring for my journeys, as well as tools to make toting large quantities of water on the trail easier. I’ll share some of those with you below.

Water is Life

80 Series Land Cruiser on the trail in Washington State.
My 80 Series Land Cruiser with my preferred method of water storage. Photo by Anthony Sicola

Humans and animals can go without food for about three weeks but would only last around three to four days without water. On average, and in perfect conditions, the typical person drinks about two liters of water per day, though that can change dramatically with the amount of exercise you get or the relative outdoor temperature. Obviously, you’ll drink more water the hotter it gets or as you increase your activity level.

The general rule for overland travel is one gallon of water per person per day. This includes water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene. So, for a single person, a three-day trip into the backcountry requires a minimum of three gallons of water.

And, no, beer and bourbon don’t count toward your water requirement — as much as you’d like them to. Alcohol dehydrates, so you will actually require more water each day.

Where Do You Store All of This Water?

Let’s not mice words. Water is heavy. One U.S. liquid gallon of fresh water weighs roughly 8.34 pounds or 3.785 kilograms at room temperature. Given that measurement, we can extrapolate that a full 20-liter/ five-gallon jerry can (that weighs 4.3-pounds empty) plus 44.3-pounds of water is around 48.6-pounds total. It is easy to see that carrying a lot of water with you can get pretty heavy, although not carrying water with you is a recipe for disaster. So, you be the judge.

Storage can be as simple as a Scepter Jerry Can, Rotopax, or a larger water tank like Front Runner Outfitters Slanted Water Tank. We’ll take a look at these options below:

Scepter Jerry Can

Product image of the Scepter Jerry Can
Scepter Jerry Can. Photo by Scepter

The Scepter Jerry Can is built to military specs and used widely around the world by the military and NATO. These five-gallon food-grade, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) construction jerry cans are BPA-free and will not add taste, odor, or any chemicals to the water. The Scepter Jerry Can features a single carrying handle and a screw-top cap that locks securely in the closed position. The small spout makes it easy to fill water bottles, and the breather hole with its own cap provides great airflow for easy pouring. I’ve used two of these mounted on a rack on my Land Cruiser for ten + years, and they haven’t let me down yet.

MSRP: $72.95

RotoPAX Water Cans

Product image of the RotoPAX Water Can

RotoPAX Water Cans are a popular choice for overland travel as they are durable, lightweight, and don’t leak. These two-gallon roto-molded water cans have thicker walls and stronger construction to make them leak-proof – along with a sure seal gasket to guarantee your spout won’t leak or vibrate loose. RotoPAX mounting kits are sold separately, but this solution provides a lot of options for placement in or on your vehicle.

MSRP: Varies by Size – $53.95 – $64.95

Front Runner Outfitters Slanted Water Tank

If you’re looking for a semi-permanent water tank, it is hard to pass up the Front Runner Outfitters Slanted Water Tank. This tank holds 50 liters or 13.2 gallons of water and includes two channels for mounting straps to make sure the tank stays where you want it. This tank is made from BPA-free polyethylene and includes plastic fittings that allow you to connect a hose for easy access. The slanted design fits perfectly behind the back seats in most SUVs.

What if you don’t want to carry water with you?

If you’re already pushing gross vehicle weight, you might not want to carry a bunch of heavy water with you. In this case, you should have a way to treat water while you’re out on the trail.

Let me be clear that I don’t recommend this option unless you are absolutely certain that you have access to a water source nearby. When I’m traveling, I can never count on being near a water source at any given time, but you may have a different experience than me.

The options below are typically used in conjunction with the products I outlined above, so you have a treatment and a storage solution.

MSR Guardian Gravity Water Purifier

Product image of the MSR Guardian Gravity Water Purifier

The MSR Guardian Gravity Water Purifier is a 10-Liter soft-sided water reservoir that is easy to fill and removes bacteria, sediment, viruses, and protozoa through gravity action. The Guardian Gravity Water Purifier features a quick-release valve with easy shutoff. It’s great for filtering water in camp while you handle other chores.

MSRP: $299.95

Katadyn BeFree AC 1.0L Microfilter

Katadyn BeFree AC 1L Microfilter. Photo by Katadyn

Katadyn’s BeFree AC 1L Microfilter is small enough to take on nearly any adventure and weighs in at just 2.2 ounces, so your vehicle weight stays low. Incredibly stowable, this water filter is quick to deploy. Simply unscrew the lid, fill it up, and the hollow fiber filter filters out bacteria, cysts, and sediment. I just wish I had one of these when I rode through India in 2007, but that’s a story for another time.

MSRP: $49.95

Lifesaver Jerry Can

Product image of the Lifesaver Jerry Can 20000UF
Lifesaver Jerrycan 20000UF. Photo by Lifesaver

The Lifesaver Jerrycan 20000UF is a great hybrid treatment/ storage solution. Its carbon filter removes viruses, bacteria, cysts, parasites, chlorine, taste, and odor out of 20,000 liters worth of water. The Jerrycan itself can hold 18.5 liters of water. The replaceable filter exceeds NSF P248 compliance standards, and the container is BPA- and BPS-free.

MSRP: $299.95

Whichever route you end up going, the most important thing to remember is that your solution needs to be easy to use. Knowing before you leave for your trip that you have clean water – or at least access to water that you can treat – is vitally important. Thinking about these things before you go is much better than winging it and not having enough water.
