Since its inception in 2009, Overland Expo has grown exponentially, expanded to five events across the United States, each featuring hundreds of vendors, over 100 presenters, trainers, and VIPs, and nearly 500 session hours of education. With so much to do during the event, it can be both exhilarating and a bit overwhelming for the first-time attendee to an Overland Expo.

Here’s a brief introduction to what we have going on, along with some tips to get you going, whether you’re an Overland Expo veteran or a newcomer experiencing all the excitement for the first time.

Things to Do Before You Arrive

First things first. If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, head over here and do that. With your tickets in hand, be sure to download the Overland Expo app from your phone’s app store (links below). The official app gives you access to the event map, event schedule, and an easy way to find the vendors or classes you are looking for. Once you have the app, be sure to select “Overland Expo Mountain West 2025” as the event and let it download the event-specific data.

Once you arrive, the overland world is your oyster. Here are the highlights to get you on your way:

Educational Opportunities

A huge part of our event revolves around education. Classes are open to everyone and run all day long in our education pavilion, and the DIY area. There are a ton of classes ranging from cooking classes to electrical and solar systems, first aid on the road, border crossings, overland marketing, and nearly two hundred other classes.

We have a number of education areas dedicated to overland instruction. Each of these locations have an broad focus or educational theme tying the classes offered there together.

For people newer to the overlanding world or people looking to refresh their skills, be sure to check out the classes in the Overland Essentials Area. There you can get a thorough education on foundational skills like trip planning, map reading and navigation, communications, and what to do if something goes wrong, among many other topics. Highlights include Graham Jackson’s How to Plan Your Overland Trip, a perennial favorite, and Jason Specht’s Route Building 101, along with a host of other great classes from new and returning instructors.

For those looking to deepen their backcountry skills or up their camp cooking game, there will be classes just for you all weekend long at the Backcountry & Culinary Pavilion sponsored by Rugged Luxury Motors. Among the laundry list of great classes offered, check out “Ceviche in the Wild” with Top Chef Alum Chad White and Zach Elseman’s Splint Happens: Improvised First Aid for Overland Travel.

Looking to expand your technical skills up close and personal? Come by the Hands-on Pavilion. We have great classes and demonstrations throughout the event. Here you’ll find classes on trail tire repair, the Overland Radio Hands-On Lab taught by Scott Jensen, several first aid classes by Lee Vernon, as well as some great map and compass classes. That’s just the start of what you can find there all weekend long. Check out the full offerings on the app.

For those seeking adventure inspiration, the Storytelling Pavilion will be the hub of great adventure storytelling all weekend. We have a stunning lineup of people who have traveled the globe and will be sharing the inside stories behind their travels, including the good, the bad, and the ugly of extended travel. You can’t go wrong with any of the presentations planned for the weekend, but you don’t want to miss Patty Upton’s The Epic Voyager of the Sand Ship Discovery. She and her late husband Loren circumnavigated the globe in a 1966 Jeep CJ–5, spanning over 5 years and 56,000 miles, including a Guinness Book of World Records entry for the “First All-Land Crossing of the Darien Gap. You can hear all about their adventures on Saturday at 11:00.

The Women Who Wander programming has been an increasingly popular part of Overland Expo since its start just a few years ago. Come to the Women Who Wander Pavilion sponsored by Chrysler, where a wide variety of women-oriented classes, roundtables, and get togethers will offered throughout the event. Classes range from tips on offroad driving to mastering your offroad vehicle components, to safety and security as a solo female adventurer. Come help kick off the weekend’s adventures on Friday at 9:00 am for the Welcome and Community Conversation for Women Who Wander (or Who Think They Might Like to).

The Learning Lab sponsored by Wanderbox will make its debut at Overland Expo MW this year. The educational space is intended to provide more intensive education for those looking to do a deeper or more advanced dive into a given topic or area. The instructor / attendee ratio is smaller in this teaching area, allowing for open dialogue and complex learning. Topics range from budgeting to solo travel to mounting a conservation-oriented expedition among so many more topics.

For those wanting to go deeper into a topic, the Round Table Pavilion hosts roundtable panels and Q&A sessions with our experts. Topics vary across a broad range from budgeting to travel medicine to bringing your pet along for the adventure. Additionally, there are a number of regional Q&A’s happening all weekend long. If there’s a destination, domestic or abroad you’ve been dreaming about, there’s probably a roundtable for you. Here’s your chance to interact with the people who have done what you want to do.

If you have kids with you, be sure to check out the Kids Adventure Area, where we have kid-centric classes and adventure activities running all weekend long. The Kids’ RC Driving course is a particularly popular option. While the education is oriented toward kids, there is still a lot of great content for parents looking to bone up on their backcountry skills alongside the next generation of overlanders. One important note – parents need to stay with their kids at these classes.

Check out the Overland Expo app for a full schedule of classes.

Vendors

No doubt, the vendor area is one of the most popular parts of Overland Expo. This year, our Mountain West event will have more than 350 vendors there, with those numbers growing every day. Just about anything overland-related you can imagine can be found for sale, but the most enjoyable thing may be just wandering around and discovering new and interesting kit. You’ll find some in-booth demos, giveaways, and demonstrations going on in the vendor area – a further reward for wandering about a bit. The complete list of vendors can be found here.

You’ll find exclusive deals aplenty throughout the area, with some vendors offering their best prices of the year. If there is something particular you are looking for, check out our evolving show specials list to see some of the best deals to be had.

The HEMI is Returning to Jeep and RAM https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/the-hemi-returns-to-jeep-and-ram/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 19:01:23 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51754 Well, if you’ve been following the demise of the V8-powered Jeeps and RAM 1500 trucks, it has been a wild ride that seems to be continuing. After the apparent demise of the RAM TRX, Stellantis announced the Jeep Wrangler 392 Final Edition for the 2025 model year, seemingly sealing the fate of the V8 options for the Wranglers and RAM 1500s. The 392 Final Edition built upon an already impressive Wrangler with cosmetic updates throughout and a number of upgrades including; a triple hoop grill guard, a Warn winch, a fold-out tailgate table, an onboard air compressor, a custom toolkit, and even .5 inches of additional lift on top of the 1.5 inch lift and 35-inch tires found on other 392 Wranglers. All of this made for an impressive send-off for the powerful Wrangler.

Well, now it appears the end of the 392 was more of a lull. According to some remarks from Stellantis leadership, the Wrangler 392 is coming back, and it’s bringing some friends. Our friends at The Drive reported that Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf, speaking at a recent briefing, said, “Wrangler and Gladiator fans, and the Hemi fans in general, don’t worry. We got you.” That’s right, the Hemi is back at Jeep, and seemingly, it will be debuting in the Gladiator soon.

Once again, fresh on the heels of the discontinuation of the RAM 1500 TRX, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa said, “The V8 engine on versions such as the RAM 1500 TRX will deliver to us additional volumes.” Given that the TRX currently isn’t available, this seems to insuate that a return is on the horizon. While no official dates have been given, at least we know that the last Hemi-powered Jeeps and RAM 1500s aren’t a thing of the past. We’ll be sure to update our audience once the official dates are available.

Adventures for Pint Sized Overlanders at Overland Expo Mountain West https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/adventures-for-pint-sized-overlanders-at-overland-expo-mountain-west/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 15:51:16 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51736

Overland Expo Mountain West is just around the corner, and if you’re bringing your pint-sized adventure buddies, you don’t want to miss out on the family-friendly program. All weekend long, there are great opportunities for kids to get involved with the fun, plus parents who are curious about taking their kids on the road have a great chance to learn from some seriously well-traveled parents.

For starters, kids don’t want to miss the RC off-road driving course sponsored by the Overland Expo Foundation. They can steer RC cars around a course that includes all the challenges and obstacles you’re likely to find deep in the backcountry. The course is open all Friday 1 PM – 3:50 PM, Saturday 10 AM – noon, Saturday 1 PM – 3:50 PM, and Sunday 10 AM – noon, so be sure to stop by for miniature off-road action.

If you’re considering taking your family on the road long-term, or maybe you’re just curious how parents even manage such a feat, you need to check out Overlanding as a Kid: What We Packed and What We Learned with the Lostetter Family. Overlanding as a kid is way different than it is for adults. You’re stuck in the car, you need to stay entertained, and there’s never enough space for all your stuff. This class is for kids (and parents!) who want real advice from two kids who have been there. We’ll share what we’ve learned about staying busy on long drives, what we wish we packed, and what we totally didn’t need. We’ll also tell stories about the weird, fun, and crazy things we’ve done, like eating guinea pig or jumping off cliffs, because the best part of overlanding is trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone. Come hang out and get inspired to make your own adventures! The Lostetter family is hosting the session in the Kids Adventure Area on Friday at 11 AM and on Saturday at 9 AM. You can learn more about the Lostetters in the Instructor Spotlight linked below.

Sneak Peek at the Showcase and DIY Entries of Overland Expo MTN West 2025 https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/showcase-and-diy-entries-mtn-west-25/ Thu, 07 Aug 2025 20:00:20 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51506 Overland Expo MTN West is fast approaching, and with it, one of our favorite portions of the show: the Showcase and DIY Vehicle Area. For those uninitiated, this is a curated space where attendees can see a gathering of unique, customized overland rigs and gather with fellow enthusiasts. It’s a section of the show meant to inspire, to awe and to connect. Attendees can see variety of build styles, learn about mods, and connect with the owners of these impressive rigs.

A little background on the Showcase and DIY Area: Folks submit applications to take part in the Showcase and DIY Area. Our team selects applications based off of their vehicle’s attributes, travel history (has it actually been out doing the dang thing??) and the backstory of the vehicle’s owners. Each of the vehicles selected are scheduled for a designated time slot during the weekend’s festivities, in which the owners will give tours of their vehicles. Attendees are welcome to walk through the area at any time during show hours, and can request a vehicle tour from any vehicle owner. It’s a great way to make new friends, share stories and learn!

In anticipation of the event, here’s a sneak peek at a small selection of the vehicles that have traveled from across the globe to meet us in Colorado. Whether you’re daydreaming about your ideal rig, want to get inspired to make some mods on what you’re currently driving or simply want to share some high fives and good vibes, the Showcase and DIY Area is a can’t-miss installation of Overland Expo Mountain West.

The Lostetters: 2010 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 5.7V8 4×4

About The Lostetters:

The Lostetters, otherwise known as Overland For Good, are an adventurous family who just returned from their 18-month journey down the Pan American Highway, traveling through Central and South America. Passionate about overlanding, they document their experiences to inspire others to explore the world on their own terms. Known for their down-to-earth, practical advice, Overland For Good shares insights on everything from vehicle preparation and route planning to budgeting and living on the road. Their mission is to make overlanding accessible to all, offering real-world tips, honest cost breakdowns, and unforgettable travel stories. Follow @OverlandForGood for inspiration, guides, and a glimpse into their life on the road.

About the rig:

We swapped out the factory bed for a Summit Expedition Trucks 90×80″ bed, complete with four storage boxes to keep our gear organized and easily ready. We purchased a used, non-cabover Phoenix Camper. We completely gutted it and built a layout that suits our family’s specific needs. With Arctic Turn windows and a thoughtfully designed interior, we’ve crafted a space that’s cozy, functional, and so far has been able to handle extreme weather conditions even with the pop-up feature. The pop top adds an extra 2 feet providing extra height for bunk beds and windows with lots of air flow. We can even sleep with the top down (Patagonia Protocol – Lillian on the floor Case in bed with us.) in bad weather, maintaining full access for cooking and daily activities. With a bit of prep, we can fit the whole setup into a high cube shipping container. It’s been a great home these past years.

The Lees: 994 Stewart & Stevenson LMTV M1079

About the Lees:

Mike and Deb Lee are longtime Overland Expo instructors, and recently sized-up their rig.

About the rig:

Our as yet un-named rig is a 1994 Stewart & Stevenson LMTV M1079. He came with the Van Shop modification which provides a large box (habitat) with 5 big windows. When our rig served, he would have been able to provide a variety of services to our military men and women in the field. Our new home is powered by a 3116 Cat diesel engine, a 7 speed Allison transmission and rolls down the trail on 395/85R20s. The sun and Battle Born provide our house power and we have 100gal of water to keep us out for a long time. We are in the process of making our new rig into a fully self-contained Overlanding home so come on by and check out our progress.

Edmund Haemmerle: 2024 Tesla Cybertruck

About Edmund Haemmerle:

Edmund J Haemmerle is a retired fire fighter and founder of NJ Renewable Energy LLC. He’s a big enthusiast of Tesla vehicles, camping, hiking, national parks, and alternative ways to enjoy the outdoors. Wanted to create the first off grid, self sustaining campers in the world.

About the rig:

The pickup and truck Camper are 18 feet long. I also have a super modified travel trailer that at times we tow together. That total length is approximately 38 feet.

New Land Rover Defenders are Dakar Ready https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/new-land-rover-defenders-are-dakar-ready/ Thu, 07 Aug 2025 15:00:59 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51663 There’s no denying that the overall reaction to the reintroduction of the Land Rover Defender in 2020 was lukewarm at best. Now it seems Land Rover is playing a bit of catch-up with varying new Defender models specifically engineered for the kind of off-roading this legendary 4×4 is associated with, and even one that’s built to take on the legendary Dakar rally.

The Defender Octa debuted earlier this year and features a host of upgrades geared toward performance on and off the pavement. For starters, it’s powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that cranks out 626 horsepower. That’s 108 more horsepower than the second most powerful option, and over double the stock 2.0 four-cylinder. The twin-turbo V8 pushes 590 pound-feet of torque, and it boasts a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. The track is widened by 2.7 inches, and the Octa boasts 11.5 inches of ground clearance. And because stream crossings happen, the Octa can handle just shy of three feet of water. 35.4 inches to be exact.

READ MORE: Top 6 Tips on How to Work From the Road as a Digital Nomad

If the Octa isn’t off-road ready and performance-focused enough for you, don’t fret, because while it isn’t available at the local dealership, the Defender D7X-R is ready to take on one of the world’s toughest tracks. This Rover will be piloted by four-time Dakar Rally stage winner Sara Price in the 2026 edition of the race. Sara will be competing in the “Stock” category across a nearly 5,000-mile course that features tough desert terrain and conditions that push both driver and machine. With any luck the modifications and engineering found on the D7X-R will trickle down to future iterations of the Defender available to the public.

August 22, 1-2 PM, Hands-on Pavilion

Being stuck in the wild while injured presents obstacles that, if not addressed, can be deadly. In this intensive hands-on session, we will show you how to create improvised life-saving devices such as tourniquets, splints for broken bones, stretchers for carrying someone out, and other basic fundamental skill sets that would need to be improvised in a worst-case scenario.

Tread Smart: Mastering Tires & Air Pressure for Off-Roading

August 23. 9-10 AM, Overland Essentials Area

Your tires are the only connection between your vehicle and the terrain, making them one of the most critical components of your off-road setup. But how do you choose the right ones? In this class, Charlene Bower breaks down the different styles of off-road tires – mud, all-terrain, and more that are vehicle specific – so you can make an informed decision as a consumer. You’ll learn how to decode every marking on a tire’s sidewall, from load ratings to ply construction, ensuring you select the best fit for your adventures. And, of course, we’ll dive into air pressures – how adjusting them affects traction, comfort, and performance in different environments. This session isn’t just about knowing tires; it’s about mastering them for ultimate success on and off the trail!

Back to Belize – Adding Conservation and a Mission to Your Overland Trip

August 23, 1-2 PM, The Learning Lab Sponsored by Wanderbox

As a lifelong overlander and expeditioner, Graham Jackson started to realize that the wild places he loved to explore were starting to disappear. Being over-run by visitors, development and industry. As a scientist he thought of ways he could give back to those places yo help preserve them, and in this session he will share ways in which you can also help to preserve the places you love in surprisingly easy ways while adding a mission and a sense of greater purpose to your travels. You don’t have to be a scientist or an educated conservationist to do this, just drawing on your skills as an overlander will put you on a great path if you can understand the simple ways to leverage them. The presentation will be given in the contaxt of an expedition to Belize to complete a failed expedition from years before.

Clear communication between the driver and spotter is critical for navigating difficult obstacles, but if both parties are not on the same page, it can lead to frustration, arguments, tears, and danger. We will work on clear hand signals, how to communicate, and what to look for. All are welcome, and couples are encouraged to attend together.

The 2025 Ultimate Overland Moto Heads to Colorado https://www.overlandexpo.com/compass/2025-ultimate-overland-moto-travels/ Wed, 06 Aug 2025 18:54:38 +0000 https://www.overlandexpo.com/?p=51639 I was awakened at first light by the most beautiful songbirds of which I had never heard, in a place I’d never been.

That first morning of a trip when you wake up in your tent next to your motorcycle somewhere in the wilderness always has a certain feeling. It’s calming, it’s freeing, it’s exciting, even euphoric. I don’t know that I can fully explain it, but it always happens to me, and hopefully you’ve experienced this as well.

On this particular morning, I was camped among the majestic granite outcroppings known as Castle Rocks in western Idaho. And as I sat with my freshly brewed coffee and basked in the golden light of dawn, it wasn’t my bike I was sitting next to and admiring, it was the Overland Expo Foundation’s Ultimate Overland Motorcycle for 2025, the kitted-out Suzuki V-strom 800.

Camping with the Ultimate Moto at Castle Rocks, Idaho

I flew into Redmond, OR a couple days prior for Overland Expo PNW. As always, it was a fantastic event and I especially enjoyed some time to take in several informative classes and presentations from like-minded overland travelers.

The mission of the trip though, was to ride the V-strom to Colorado. As a fairly seasoned motorcycle traveler, I was excited of the notion and looked forward to the ride with no set plan, albeit with only a short amount of time. I’ve done a few “fly and ride” type adventures and one of my biggest concerns is the luggage situation because you never really now how all your gear is going to fit on a certain bike until you do it. This bike, set up with Mosko Moto’s Alpine Panniers and Alpine Duffle, securely mounted utilizing Outback Motortek pannier racks and a rear luggage rack quickly whisked those concerns away. I found them incredibly easy to pack with the simple yet rugged design, and with a total of 90 liters of volume, the three bag set quickly swallowed all of my camping gear and essentials for the adventure.

A friend at the Expo mentioned Highway 26 being a great 2-lane blacktop ride out of Redmond, and after a quick look at Google maps, I was off to see for myself. The only real goal here was to ride some great roads heading east and south a little, and somewhere here and there, throw in some good dirt, a couple nice camp spots, see some countryside, and eventually make it to Loveland, CO.

It took no time at all to get comfortable on the bike as I blasted through the twisties east of Redmond. The road carved it’s way through the pines of the Ochoco National Forest, skirting lakes and cresting passes, allowing me to test the impressive road manners of the Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires, all while taking in the glorious scenery.

Stumbling upon the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument was a pleasant surprise and the visitor center made for a great opportunity to take a little break and stretch the legs. My good fortune continued as I rode past Sheep Rock and through Picture Gorge, slicing through the towering basalt columns. The canyons and hills eventually gave way to agricultural land where rich fields produced an abundance of onions that filled my nostrils with the familiar smell. The road straightened and the Veridian Cruise Control soon became a new friend. I was quite amazed how accurately it held a constant speed despite hills and random wind gusts, and found the controls intuitive and easy to use.

The Ultimate Overland Moto at Sheep Rock in the John Daly Fossil Beds

Several times I found myself crossing the Oregon Trail and came across numerous historical sites in relation, and I often stopped and read the signs and plaques. My mind wandered as I thought of the settlers traveling west in covered wagons in the mid 1800’s, the original “overlanders” perhaps. I camped just off Goodale’s Cutoff, an old shortcut that varied north of the original Oregon Trail, and as the sun faded, my mind was with those settlers, the trials and tribulations they must’ve faced, and how much travel has changed over the years. Yet there I was, traveling a similar route on just 2 wheels, experiencing some of the same natural beauty.

Traveling further East I stopped in a small farming community to fuel up the bike and grab some snacks. The Hepco & Becker tank bag from Moto Machines was easy to remove with a quick release pull of a strap, and snapped back into place to conveniently store my tasty treats for later. The Ram Mounts fastened to the bars securely held my phone and with a quick look I discovered the next place to explore.

It wasn’t long and the landscape began to change, transforming to something somewhat otherworldly, vast lava flows from centuries past soon covered the landscape surrounding me. This was Craters of the Moon National Monument, a vast ocean of lava flows covering over 1,100 square miles. As I rode the loop road and hiked a couple short trails amongst the cinder cones and sage brush, I felt as if I were on another planet.

Pit stop at Creaters of the Moon National Monument

Needing to make a mile, I cut my exploration short and got back to it. Eastern Idaho is the land of expansive wheat and hay fields and they seemed to extend for hours. Throughout a trip I often look ahead, gradually developing a route and my next move. As I approached Wyoming, large ominous storm clouds were threatening the skies around me. This is just one reason I like not having a set plan- one look at the radar, one look at the map, and a fresh route is developed.

My new plan took me South out of the storms and along the beautiful Snake River, the shores of the grand Palisades Reservoir, through the Hoback River canyon and into Pinedale, Wyoming. Seeing National Forest to the north of town I ventured out onto forest service roads in search of camp. Here I found the end of the ground clearance on the V-strom and tested the burliness of the Outback Motortek skid plate, and had a hoot doing it. The RAM Tough mirrors took a few hits from encroaching tree branches along the trail, but remained unscathed. I soon made camp near a lake and with the winds of the storm front blowing strong, I hunkered in for the night.

The morning brought blue skies and mosquitoes. Thousands of mosquitoes. No time for camp coffee, packing up rapidly, I was thankful for the Optima Batteries lithium battery that immediately brought the V-strom to life and I hit the trail early, headed for town and the local café.

It was finally time for some good dirt riding. I decided to cross the Great Divide Basin, following the Great Continental Divide Motorcycle Route, something I traversed almost 10 years prior, and I was excited to revisit it’s vast openness.

Back in the Klim Dakar riding gear and Alpha X1 Helmet, between the head-to-toe protection and the all day comfort, I felt ready to tackle anything. I was especially happy with the improvements in the helmet over my Krios Pro.

A short stretch of highway got me onto dirt, and I soon found myself in the middle of nowhere. And I mean the middle of nowhere, not a sign, not a fencepost, not a power pole, nothing but an old dirt road through an expansive landscape you find hard to believe exists. It’s a little bit comforting having a satellite communicator like the Zoleo when putting yourself in these situations. You wonder why there is even any resemblance of a road in a place like this, and it’s truly awesome. My only guess is that these are old mineral exploration roads and nature is slow to take them back.

I wasn’t alone out there though, there were numerous pronghorn antelope and small herds of majestic wild horses, and there was Mark. The route I was on also happens to be a mountain bike route, and when you come across another human being in a place like this, you have to stop and chat. Mark was on his own 2 wheel overlanding adventure, a human powered one, pedaling his mountain bike from Mexico to Canada in remembrance of his ancestors, who 175 years ago traversed this barren land in search of a better life and free land in Oregon. We had a great conversation and exchanged notes about where we’d been and where we were headed. Meetings like this are one of the reasons I love to travel.

Meeting Mark, in the Great Divide Basin, Wyoming alongside the Ultimate Overland Moto

A couple hundred miles of dirt and sand were making for a long day, but the v-strom never missed a beat and had earned my trust. Hitting pavement I was just a couple hundred miles and a couple mountain passes from my destination and I pushed on. Again, the storm clouds rolled in and the skies turned black as night, but the Cyclops Adventure Sports lights punched their way through the darkness and guided me home. It was a wonderful journey, I packed a lot into a short amount of time, and the Ultimate Overland Overland Moto Build proved itself to be ready for some ultimate adventures.
